not liking what you hear is not a good enough reaon to dismiss it.

yo check it, even i get defensive about my work. bottom line is i have no problem taking criticism, but criticism promotes better work, not anger. nothing you guys said that was negative even gets to me, its just sad to see designers speak so less of each other. i know my work gets appreciated by my clients and other designers. so i guess all i can say is i hope the best to you guys and your future projects. peace out.

for the shitter that asked if i had a site:
http://www.apt11.com/reflections…
its old. too old. but its up and it works. if anything its a look back on a years worth of work and random moments in my life.
took me all of two days to put that together. if i had built that for someone, wouldn't charge much for it. just a couple hours worth of work and thats it.
q, when i look at that site you posted and on top of that hear you whine about not getting paid enough i pray for the chance to meet you and tell you to your face how ignorant you are.
time != lots of money
the sad part is that it DID take you time to do that nonsense. worse yet, ITS NOT DONE!!! the point is to maximize efficiency for cost effectiveness for yourself AND the client. you must factor all that in with everything you do.you knew you didn't know what you were getting into with that site. yet you still took it on AND you inexperience and lack of expertise shows.
returning back to your question: what is the cost...here is my answer: 1000. period. thats all i would have paid you. and i would have ONLY done it because you are a struggling designer and out of pity i would help. other than that, you should feel MORE than fortunate you got anything at all for something that IS NOT DONE!!
if you have more dumbass clients, send them my way. i could certainly use money for nothing seeing as how you make a living that way.
- jpolk0
btw, guys... did you notice that my site is blank??? oh yeah...
sorry, a little busy doing real work that pays real money, to participate in the 'personal website' pissing match you guys all love to play.
cheers.
- honda0
i feel ya jpolk. my site is the same way:
i got no time. working onREAL projects that i FINISH keeps me busy.
but if i can get one of q's clients, i would have a sick ass site up and finish no work at all.
hook me up q!! i wanna be like you: whack!

Side note: the "peace out" sign off is now playing on my last nerve.

yeah alota negativity come'n from this thread. Crit'n some one and telling they don't like it and why, that's a good thing but when you come and and just bash and call it crap that's just crappy.
- BonSeff0
honda, jpolk,
im interested in your views on design standards and usabilty. and the faceof our industry in general.
not in a shit starting way, just general curiosity. it's hard to get a point of view from other designers on this subject these days..

qaddisin,
I will try to give my crit as professionally as possible...the rest of you, for shame.
Point: R&B loop is flawed hiccups at return point, didnt check the rest, you might want to.
Point: the ad at the top could use a different backing to sort of remove it as part of the design, ads can get ugly, maybe a black background, or if the client permits take it to the bottom.
Opinion: Splash page news feels a little after thought, perhaps make news move to the side or wider, or stagger the whole page, the layout is a little boring, play with it a bit, perhaps the 2 different entrances above one another with the news along side....balance.
Opinion: the green page does not work with the rest of the bright colors you have chosen, rething the pallette there...
other than that, this is an effective site for what it is, don't listen to some unnamed others here, and don't give into hate....
- brundlefly0
in response to your initial question, for this site I would have charged $75/ hour, I think $3000 is a fair price for the time invested.
- honda0
i am actually searching for the meaning of life. if you could help me in that area, lets sit down and have a dialog.
in regards to this whack ass thread about someone complaining over a 3000 project that is still NOT DONE, ridiculous.
then again, he is selling at a higher premium than the competition and delivering unfinished projects in three times the time it takes to actaully build it. its a good philosophy...
at least he's making a living doing that. go q! don't forget to hook me up.
- honda0
75/hr? seriously, i don't think there are any real flash designers/developers on nt. except unfit and jazx. oh and dude from atl.
actaully there are a few huh? ok, well, for them, i must say, 75/hr would be worth it. cause it would be FINISHED and look pretty damn nice.
eat it q. this site is whack and you just got a phat check for it.
- canadian0
peace out
- brundlefly0
sounds like honda needs some work.
any takers?

After reading most of the post, I am lost for words.
After thinking about it, I can say that most of us are not the best designers (that includes me).
As part of being a designer, we have an ego bigger than the size of our head. People can do what they like or say, while crit is a good thing, it has to have creditability. If I said that looks ugly while lets say David Carson said it was brilient, most of us would think that its awesome.
Most of web designers stems from 6 month course or self taught. Most of us lack design sense. Using this forum helps us all to grow (or rip). It is important to help one another but at the same time give some creditability to what you are saying and how you say it.
If you are doing design for money, than you are in the wrong field. You gotta love what you do. I think alot of people got in to this business as the boom started and there was a market for it. And is also why alot of us are umemployeed because there are people who are willing to work for $15 per hour for less quality of work And of course the people who hire them does not have any sense in design. (cheap? yuo are hired).
As a creative professional, you are supposed to guide the ciient in to the right path not just make them happy.
- jpolk0
bon,
design standards, usability; maybe we should cover religion as well? ;)
Frankly i think that both design standards and usability are, to a limited extent, relative to the industry, as well as the client, you are designing for (see: end user).

"As a creative professional, you are supposed to guide the ciient in to the right path not just make them happy."
well said.
Peace out.

1994 Arsenio Hall said goodbye a final time using his clever tagline....
"Peace Out"
we never ever saw him again.
- canadian0
and thank god for that.
- honda0
sorry brundle. i got work. doing quite well thanks.
mr dinky's point is well stated and should be a speech given to all art school web designer students: its not about the money, its about the love... ??
i would love to be a ceo...for the money. period. money smooths a lot of shit over. i know people in jobs right now that do it for one thing and one thing along...money.
that said, i do not agree with that. i do what i love. and that is dis the hell out of whack shit and change idget thinking. somehow designers (not developers..specifically web designers) have forgotten the meaning of business and integrity.4cY's comment about heart surgey was actually relevant. the doctor went to school for hella years to get his skills down. then they have to put in some time and do their residency at a hospital, then, if lucky they can get the job of a lifetime helping needed people. now, if all that schooling came down to the line adn the docot ris performing heart surgery and decides to skip a few threads in sewing up a person, the person DIES.
why is it that artists think that missing a thing or two here and there is acceptable? all this school training should ahve taught your ass how to be responsible, execute to completion and be fully accountable. this site is undone. this thread was not needed. you should have crept under the rug and accepted the fact that hey, i just got paid for nothing.
as for constructive vs in your face criticism, there is no time for mamsy pamsy shit on here. if he wanted that, he should have asked his mom how the site looked before coming in here yapping at professionals about how he got ripped completing and unfinished site witha slap in the face to the tune of 3000. what? absurd.
