Took Thursday and Friday off to go NY.
Leaving tomorrow and coming back on Sunday.
It's the first time I go as a tourist, not for work or studying. Should be fun :P

    • Bring a jacket, looks like it might get cool this weekend!...robotron3k
    • ^ for real? I want to wear shorts :(
Guess I'll bring something long sleeve, just in case. Thanks!

Did something I've always wanted to on the way in - threw rubbish back in the window of a car it'd just been thrown out of, then was all like

when the meat head got out of his head to challenge me.

Thankfully I was already a few steps out when he got out of his car. He was a big motherfucker and I am but a timid ginger pussy.

    • ? Got out of his car, even.detritus

Going to San Francisco at the end of the month, man this city is expensive!
So we are going to stay in Oakland, any does and don't in Oakland? My only reference are some Worldstar video of people fighting in parking lots.

Do you love the city/place that you live in?

For those of you in London, do you once a week/month or so find yourself thinking "I love London"?

    • Nope, the opposite - I have to constantly refrain from reminding my partner that the only reason I'm in this shitting city is because she changed her mind.detritus
    • ..I used to though.
First 10-15 years were great, but I'm old now and I'd prefer to live away and then perhaps visit for a weekend once a year.

    • Yes. Very much so.monospaced
    • I live in Brighton, UK, and I absolutely love it, and most people that live here do to. It's a very happy, creative, open minded, community focused small cityset
    • We have the beach one side and the south downs the other, and london is an hour away on the train. As far as the UK goes, it's perfect.set
    • I'm getting a queasy stomach just thinking about my impending plan to move back to London...shapesalad

    guttered.

we left Germany 18 months ago. we told everyone we needed to and deregistered.

except we kept getting payments for the kids. we emailed, called and wrote letters telling them we had left and were told by another department its normal for us to keep getting money.

every month, 360euro into our account.

now, 18 months later they are like, oh, actually you owe us 6500 euro now.

worst part.. we just got a huge tax refund from Australia .. so in the space of 3 days had $10k come into the account and then go straight back out.. without us doing anything wrong.

    so wrong.

    • did you spend the money you knew wasn't yours or just stash it for when they asked for it back?hans_glib
    • we were told by at least 3 different departments that because our kids were German and my wife is German, they are entitled to that moneyautoflavour
    • If you have that in writing then you shouldn’t have to give it back.monospaced
    • problem is that the actual department we needed to speak with is a 1800 number available only within Germany, and all our emails and snail went unanswered ..autoflavour
    • the first 3000 I brought back with me last year and the other we had planned on using to cover the 3 week holiday we are currently on. so instead of havingautoflavour
    • left over after the holiday, we are now in the hole... if it wasn't for the unexpected tax refunds, we would have be fucked. but still its $10000 goneautoflavour
    • the ineptitude of German bureaucracy never fails to amaze me.. how can a system continue to pay so muchautoflavour
  • detritus1

    @autoflavour

If my dealings with a couple of German companies are anything to go by, I'm unsurprised. My idealised impression of 'German efficiency' has been much-eroded these past few years, having dealt with organisations whose varying departments appear entirely unable to communicate with one another, or even take repeated instructions via phonecalls and emails.

As hans asks, I'm hoping you didn't spend the cash — I'm hoping you stuck it in a seperate account and used the interest (such as it'd be) and as unused collateral. By the sounds of it though, you've spent it, haven't you? Silly!

Well, the Good Lord Giveth and the Good Lord Taketh away...

    • Apparently Germans are actually human.
      Whodathunkit?

    • If you're back in Oz though - wtf can they do?detritus
    • we spent it as we were told by a number of different officials that we were legitimately allowed to have it. but they informed us wrong.autoflavour
    • didn't spend all of it, but read above.. we had already spent it in theoryautoflavour

    AAAAAUGHHH.

I've not drank alcohol in a week and by God, that first quenching sip of ice cold Scrumpy on an overly-sunny Friday ... Goodness. Pure, unadulterated Goodness. I've not smoked any cheechee for the last week either.

I think I might try and stick to this habit - almost akin to how normal people function.

It's been literally decades since I've had even this meagre amount of time away from illicits and fuckme if I can't feel cobwebs cleared away, a new level of clarity.

    • Funny, it took me a good hour or so of mental back'n'forthing to go for it. A big chunk of me was hesitant to reëngage.detritus

Also, I had a new client in earlier - young girl, very nice, very talented - and as I went over her files on my computer she espied in my notes a client who she recognised, and was seemingly impressed by, and then when I opened her file, she noticed alongside her name in my 'new clients' folder someone else who she was even more impressed by.

these aren't brands or big names, but good people doing cool shit, who i'm lucky enough to help out in some small way.

I've had a bit of a shit year over all, so this was a nice wee pick-me-up.

Shapesalad asked the other day if we loved our city, and I said I absolutely didn't. Well, shit - times like this, I do actually like LDN, because I'd be hard-pressed to work with some of the people I do anywhere else - Any.Where. NYC, Paris, Beijing or Tokyo, Anywhere.

I guess I'm going to have to learn to appreciate what I've got.. holding on for dear life onto the coat tails of younger, better, nicer people than me :)

couldn't find a "the little things" thread but..

found the girlfriend a license plate to express her love of elephants that matches her jeep pretty well (thanks alabama) and i've just found her a key fob garage remote that also matches the paint / interior. these details coordinating for her bring a grin to my face.
