I am being as humble as possible here ....
Web design is a business to me not an art form. To the designers it is probably an art, but my company is nothing more than a business of numbers. That being said I am very comfortable. I own the company and have a nice house / car / boat. We do what the client wants, and charge a fairly high price. You have never heard of many of the companies we have done work for, but the strength is in the sales numbers not the client recognition. We did 900,000 in sales last year, which is great for a 6 person organization.

Thats awsome nervous, thats pretty much what i was looking to hear about. people making it in this biz. Keep it up. Best of luck!
ps, the house/car/boat thing only counts when they are paid for.

Very true Er. Boat and car are paid. House is still 12 more years of mortgage payments.

good luck to you nirvous - thats awesome!
living the american dream....

12 is nothing for a mortgage. So are you biz dev, coder, other? i heard you refer to designers as if you were excluded?
Was it a long, short, smooth, rocky road? any tips on owning your own show?

Get a mentor. A family friend or relative that is a business owner and simply ask them to mentor you. Surprisingly, not many small business owners have someone that they can go to for advice. I have had a mentor since college and that has made all the difference.
If you dont know someone that could be a good mentor you should check with your local (US) Small Business Administration and check out SCORE. (Service Corp of Retired Executives).
Email me if you need some good generic contracts and client forms to get you started.

My mother always told me that artists die starving...You can make money in this biz. I know plenty of designers making good money both working for others and running their own business.I started out as a designer and transitioned into the business side. I started Media Temple with several partners originally as a design house, then a design and hosting company and finally as a pure hosting company. MadMerch was developed in house at Media Temple and I now run it full time. All of this was done with very little investment and a whole lot of innovative (cheap) marketing. I hear plenty of jokes on NT about having the (mt) logo on their site but it was the only type of marketing we could afford and it has worked pretty well for us. I would say if you are going to make a lot of money working for yourself or others, you really have to stay ahead of the pack and diversify your skill set. Most of the people I know that are making good money nowadays are programmers and designers in broadcast.

I've worked for Paregos, Razorfish and the last few years for some companies in Japan (where I am now).
Moreover I do freelance gig on my sparetime, but my salary is lower than most of the numbers in this thread. However in my case that doesn't matter. I am exactly where I want to be, doing what I like. For that I consider myself very lucky, and in a sense very "rich" too.

>ps, the house/car/boat thing only
>counts when they are paid for.the house counts well before it's paid for.
you can make a ton of money buying and selling real estate (before you pay off that 30 year mortgage)

word PeterH. isn't it rough in japan?
- Peter0
Without proficiency in Japanese it's tough. I work at an old friends ad agency, that's how I manage to get around.
However it is doable without Japanese ability (nor any talent in some cases too). The economy just have to catch up.

god you guys are inspiring - i'm sitting here in a dead end job earning a pittance compared to those sitting around me, all for the overseas work experience. maybe i just have the wrong attitude! but seriously, jox has it right - you wanna make serious coin, you work for yourself, or better, you start a business and get serious - turnover and profit is what makes the economy run, not type and image, and your life will be better off for it. I had that in the past with my own business, but left it to be creatively fulfilled working in a high-end studio, but am now wishing to return to my own show. Even if you have to do it after hours to start with, give it a go - turn your freelance into a business, a brand, and see if it begins to take over your life to the point where you have to give up your day job to handle the freelance work - then you know you're on the right track! the guys at psyop started that way, although i'm not sure where they're at now ...
