japan looks like mars to me =) what an experience! but, isn't it complete different to make concepts and design for japanese clients? it's so different from western shapes i mean -- and you don't know the language at all

There's money to be made out there, I do ok with freelancing but could do a helluva lot better if I a) didn't take two month holidays b) took it seriously c) chased business leads. I'm getting too old for this amateurish attitude - time to get serious and get rich (well, maybe not 'rich' rich but you know what I mean).

No no, I speak and write Japanese (well, to some extent). What I meant was, for those who want to work here without having that ability will have a hard time. Sorry about the confusion.
But as for designconcept, I think design is international. There's really not a country tied to specific design. At least not anymore, when it comes to webdesign or generall graphic design.
With that said however, Japan happen to have so incredibly many skillfull designers.

It seems if you can talk the talk and blag your way into some situations - ie as someone earlier put it, know how to sell - then a client will be willing to go with it.

that's right, we were a franchisee, for a period, contracted as communication padvisers to coordinate a funding application for the Arts Council and Canal Network, the three of us have backgrounds in design and art theory, in fact my right hand man is a risk manager! daft eh?

Currently at around $70K but about to open the doors of our new office soon and plan to expand in ways I can't while doing the freelance thing. I only work with 3 - 4 clients right now but plan to have that and have the potential to have around 6-8 well off clients who will be bringing in a majority of the loot. Medical and Music industry.
Clients are willing to pay double if they see you more as a company then a freelance. Not to say they won't pay well for freelance, just that you can get more with a simple dba and a small 300 sq foot studio.
Overhead for our new place is around $1000.00 - $1200.00 a month. You all know how quickly that can be made and surpassed. Add a couple of PC workstations and land a larger client. Grab a contractor and expand. That is the beauty of what we do. We can bring on others with a small investment and have a large return.
The hard part is making the decision to move to the next level in business. Once you do that, you force yourself to keep moving forward. Not to mention that a 2 year lease is enough motivation.
Good luck to all. Look at the large agencies and follow in their footsteps with your vision. That is what makes a good creative studio.
