i admit. some of you have surprised me in this thread.
symbols lose their meanings... yea, this is true. . . after a few http://hundred years. not while the http://survivorshttp://arehttp://stillhttp://alive. no matter what it means in ancient cultures.
the confederate flag (old glory, not union jack) shouldn't be used in this discussion for making a case of "oh it's alright". there are tons of people in the south who are violently opposed to its use in our state flags. . . myself included. argue how you will. it isn't "just a flag" or "just a design". it means something. it means http://something powerful / http://awful.
if someone painted these symbols above my door, it would anger and frighten me. http://unbalancedhttp://peoplehttp://clinghttp://tohttp://thesehttp://symbols. you wanna make "good design"? make a new fucking symbol. stop using this shit and saying "it aint like that anymore." because it IS like that. neo-nazis, skinheads and other hate groups are all the proof you need.
now then. i ranted. not that it will affect anyone's viewpoint or make a difference, but it is the way that shit is in my eyes.
look at ya, ya done got me riled up after only a few monites of being awake. fuckers.

Montreal,
I want to wear a shirt with a maple leaf to show support for a free democratic and liberal country that did not send refugees back to Nazi Germany to die there during WWII...oh wait...

Laurus!
Nice idea! We should hang out!
Damn, all this time I grew up thinking that 20000 Canadian solgiers died at Normandy on June of 1944. I didnt know we were actually fighting on the Nazies side.. Thanks for clearing that up!

Spent last evening with Oswald Adler. One of the greatest graphic designers of all time. His works are in museums across the world. Painter. Author. 91 years old and one of the most active people I've met.
Survived the holocaust. Lost all of his family during the war. Was not allowed to leave Romania (by the communists ) for years after the war. He told me a bit about the strength of design and how design almost cost him his life. This is not nostalgia for him. It is his life.
People who say "just a symbol" should think again what design is all about.

Montreal,
Well, what you grew up thinking is right. But not the whole picture. Ships with refugees were sent back.

Btw Laurus, Dont think Im Jew-hater or what not. I tryly beleive its absolutly stupid/ignorant for a store to use symbols of human suffering for marketing purposes.
But lets not be hypocrits here. (Whatever that means)

Montreal,
I oppose Sharon. I work for the refuseniks (an organization of soldiers who go to jail for refusing to serve in the occupied territories). Still, there is no basis for comparing Israel to Nazi Germany.

erm, my 2 cents worth...
to compare the union jack to the swastica is frankly sickening...
I appriciate that some people wouldnt of liked it, as it represented opression and an empire... funny how they are still all part of the comonwealth though... and although a lot of people died thoughout the 150 years or so of the british empire, due to wars...none of it was done under the guise of 'racial purification' and to suggest otherwise is wrong.
on the store... frankly its a cheap and crass way of getting publicity... It is wrong, and the day the swastica becomes a fashion icon, is the day 50 million people who dies in the second world war, and not to mention their relatives, will be turning in their grave...
just wrong, and to say otherwise is to show ignorance to history.

Although you wouldnt have thought that the isralis had been a pursicuted race for 2000 years the way the act toward the palestinians...

OMG HONG KONG IS NOT IN JAPAN YOU ILLITERATE HERBS
I wonder if people read upside down sometimes
comparing isreal to the nazis is not so wrong after all, motherfuckers love to kill palestinians, couldn't even hold their cease fire for the sake of peace
plus their big ass fence is a friendly reminder to the jew ghettos back then

after reading absolutely none of these threads, only the thread title, i get the strange feeling i should take down all my swastika artwork, flags, banners, posters, nude dolls with tattoos of, paintings, plates, glasses, bed spread, pillow cases, pencil erasers and remove it from my computer background.
heh heh. kidding.

SportyThief,
From today's headlines:
"Truce breached as suicide bombers kill 2 Israelis in a minimarket".
There's a fence between Mexico and the US, and there are no Mexicans blowing up and killing Americans in supermarkets.
I oppose a lot of what goes on in the occupied territories. As I mentioned, I work for the refuseniks. Israel does terrible things. Palestinian terror is no excuse for occupation. Still, anyone comparing this to what the Nazis did in Europe, or even to what the US and Britain did (and is still doing, to some extent) in Iraq and Afghanistan, is ignorant if not malicious.

laurus- For what it is worth:
maximum respect to everybody working for your organization. Saw a documentary on it and I appreciate the good work you do there.
