i'm still running on OS 9.1. but i've had OS X since it came out, but never fully committed. i'm afraid of not being able to use ATM and some other important programs. want to hear NT people's feelings on this. should i convert? can i run both? what's the deal?

  • xrusos0

convert. throw away 9. 10.3 will have a font book application that works similar to iTunes. So dive in and never look back. i'm surprised you've made it this far. when i tech support old machines on 9 i can't believe i was such a mac fan before os x.

  • monodev0

osx has far greater stability than os9. os9 is long gone.

  • xrusos0

after the 6th month you'll realize that you haven't crashed or restarted the whole time. then you'll smile and thank apple for all their hard work.

  • CyBrainX0

I agree. And there's nothing wrong with Suitcase 10 in OS X. So, don't worry about fonts. I have my 17" laptop for 2 months with no crashes yet. You can use os9 if you use old software.

The only thing is that the older your computer, the worse it will run. I wouldn't bother doing it if you don't have at least some kind of G4.

  • kreydle0

I disagree. I run a G3 powerbook with OS X Jaguar and it runs fine.

I love OS X. I can't believe I used OS 9 for so long before switching.
Switch now and get used to it because the look and feel of this new OS is going to be on all Apples new apps.

You do know that OS 10.2 still runs OS 9, right? You can switch back for older apps.

I think all important applications are now available under OS X natively...including the long awaited (by some) QuarkXpress. The simple truth is that you can't even begin to compare OS X to OS 9....and if you did, then it would just be some sort of horrendously ridiculous comparission.

My suggestion is that you dive in head first and forget about OS 9, don't even install it unless you are absolutely, 100% sure you will need it.

    Enjoy X.

OS X is still not as responsive as OS 9.

there are still small bugs in it.

I would say wait for 10.3
and make sure you have a G4 and a Quartz Extreme supported video card. Nevermind what that other dude said - he'd say differently if he used a newer machine. OS X is a little sluggish on my Dual G4 867 - mainly OS window responsiveness.

    Just wait for 10.3/Panther

That's what I am doing. I'm anal retentive about my OS.

    I'm still pissed i can't turn off anti-aliasing.

Despite the fact i think osX is a tad slower than 9, it is far more stable and you can do many things while a program starts up, also quit it if you opened it by mistake, there's no ATM and looks like it wont be, but there's Suitcase. Since Flash came out for osX I didnt have any more excuses to swap to X, all the other important software is already X. The only problem will be scanners. You'll probably have to use VueScan which is not the fastest software.

  • SaintWalker0

OS X has small bugs...yah, so does absolutely every piece of software. At least it's not one massive bug like OS 9. I use OS X 10.2.6 on a Dual 500 G4 and it kills. I would NEVER even think about using 9...I'd rather die. I know what you are talking about when you say it is less responsive....but come on, if you compare productivity....wait wait, can you even? I can be compressing DV, burning a CD, downloading something, and surfing or doing some design at the same time...try that in OS 9 and tell me it's more responsive. The only problem I have with OS X is the lack of control over the GUI...Aqua. I wish you could turn off things like shadows, fades, zooms, genies and all that other cool stuff if you wanted to. I know you can achieve some of this by editing the .plist files and using third party software...but that's just not the same...I'm wary of those utilities.

By the way, for anyone that cares...I tried out the latest build of Panther on my PowerBook 800...pretty damn cool, especially Expose and quick user switching...some things still don't work and there are obviously still bugs, but I think it'll be a sweet OS. Once again though, I was hoping for more UI control.

About the AntiAliasing, for text you can turn off all text below a certain font size, and in Preview you can turn it off as well....it's not system wide but it might make you a bit happier.

    Cheeeeers.

Go with OS X. Its just better all round.

I have use OS X 10.3 and it is mush faster then 10.2. It fill as fast as OS 9 so maybe weight for that to come out.

I have also use a BETA version of Photoshop 8 which will only run on OS X for mac so I would switch now if I was you, just so you can get used to the sys-term and trouble shooting if need be.

  • roboteralarm0

ya..go with os x! go for 10.3 if you need fontmanagement...
suitcase is tError if you need to run your quark 3 or 4 in classic...
    but quark 5 is there..
photoshop7 is damm slow..but it works. most of the time. don´t trust your file browser if you´re browsing your local servers..
after the first stable skinning apps came out i stick with X. had to get rid of the stripes in the backgrounds and those ugly rounded corners....

  • Burnlab0

After working on X for just a few days, 9 will look and feel like ancient technology. Its like having an all new machine - I fell in love all over again. Any snags with old software are easily handled in Classic mode. When you're downloading a movie, burning a CD, running a filter on a 200mb PhotoShop file and force-quitting some Microsoft Office app all at exactly the same time without any hint of protest, its a beautiful moment.

Well were is work many are PC and MAC. All the macs run OSX. At first I really did not think it was a big deal, but it was.

OSX is better! Hands down. It will take you a week to get use to it, but is is better. OS9 will then feel like a dinosour.

OSX connects better and faster to Windows networks.

But if you are going to move over you MUST :

#1 Use SuitCase for your fonts (which is very nice and even takes lots of PC fonts)

#2 Use native OSX apps. Do not use classic apps. You will be sorry.

#3 Get a newer G4 or G5 to run it. The apps are more demanding and you will need the horsepower to run it.

#4 Have it so it is dual boot (OS9 and OSX). Even if you switch over you will once in a while have to do somthing on OS9 for some reason (at least for the first 6 months from when you switch over to OSX).

#5 Make sure your other equipment has compatable drivers. Expecally printers.

Depends on the spec of your mac. If you’re on anything below a G4 forget it, especially if you use more than 3 apps at once. You’ll drop kick it out the window I tell you! I almost had a breakdown, went back to OS9 and sorted! I do miss it though, iLife is worth it for the whole digital management lifestyle thing.

If you’ve got a good spec Mac then you’ll never look back, it’s fantastic. A few bugs but that’s expected.

im running 10.2 on a g3 500 and things arent too bad. photoshop 7 is a tad slow (not enough hd space to run classic ehehe..) but everything else seems to be find and i don't have many problems running fh10+ps7+etc. at the same time.. it is ugly though.

  • Meeklo0

Osx all the way, even if you have a g3, it doesn't matter as long as you have lots of ram, if you want to live in hte past, stay with 9.

I still have my commodore 128 with dataset, Im sure its more stable than any windows :)

  • cinder0

No other OS that I know of has a bug that where you click a window it becomes active but DOESNT come forward.

It happens to me all the time in OS X and it's just one of a few small things that I refuse to put up with.

I'm really close, I really am. Just not totally there.

Panther will kick it for me.
THat, and the new G5 I'm gonna order.
    ehehehehe.

  • phist0

thanks a lot, peoples. i'm definitely installing os x tonight. the newstoday forum is more reliable than the apple website. rock on, NT!
