yeah, I agree... they need to stop spending all their god damn money on F-22 and Commanche's and start spending it on things like space shuttles. When are they gonna land on the moon again anyway??

i grew up in nacogdoches.
insane that it would explode over this tiny-ass town.

I'm not sure I see the significance of this event. It is in the news on all channels. 7 people died, sad indeed. At the same time way more people die driving their SUVs. I guess this is just another knock on the feeling of invincibility the americans were so well known for. Sorry to be such a bastard, carry on.

if you don't see the significance of this event, YOU ARE A BASTARD.
enough said.

exactly, people on the highway dont rist their lives going mach 18 or flying at 200,000 feet! Not to mention the fact that they are in space.

is it karma ?

so sad. my prayers are with the surviving families and those involved in this project. hopefully the deaths of the astronauts won't be over-shadowed by excessive speculation about possible "terrorism".

Poor bastards - 'tis a sad day for science.
Let's hope some good comes of this tragedy and people try even harder to reach for the stars.
fuck that was cheesy.

ok,
You think the driving comparison was stupid. Fair enough. How about the soldiers that died in Afganistan week ago in a helicopter crash. All I say is that there is more to this than just 7 people dying. And for what did they die for? I'm not the only one questioning the importance of aerospace research. Back in the days it was funded for cold-war reasons. Now there is no competition.
Off course it is on the news. Spectacular explosions and human suffering always interesting. If we could catch all the car crash it might be hit shot...

blend, this is for you:

hmmm...
mitsy. It is true that I'm not a big fan of political correctness. I'm also in a fever so I might not be able to express myself in the most tactful way. Sorry for all of you I may have hurt. Maybe it is too early for you to debate the subject bit more deeply.
Somehow I just feel that all that praying for their families and stuff is not all that genuine. GWB was also very quick to earn some points.

Time to start training monkey's again......

I think you are missing the point. It's not only about the individual lives of the astronauts, it's about the significance on their achievements, of the space shuttle, of our exploration of space, about science and technology, and ultimately, it's about a dream. That died today. That is why it is significant and why it should not be compared to traffic accidents.
Not many can become astronauts, only a select few can achieve that dream that so many of us thought about as a kid. You should recognize them for their contributions to discovery, not diminish their existence by comparing them to every other person.
Sure, some of the sympathy feelings may be misplaced, but it is an unsettling feeling when something of this magnitude happens.
I only hope the began working towards new ships, those babies are getting really old.

Yo blend. I share you opinion but...
why not just shut the fuck and let people share their respect and grief for those brave guys that died, doing a service for humanity the rest of us down here. You can talk your shit a week from now when this will become old news and people wont give a shit anymore. but until then. please..

mbr - you said it:
"achievements, of the space shuttle, of our exploration of space, about science and technology, and ultimately, it's about a dream"
Exactly,
That's what I was saying. It is question of more than 7 lives. It is slap on the face for those that want to believe in the old world.Fact is that they could easily fly those missions unmanned. Selecting a crew is just a publicity stunt. What is the significance of the research done on board anyway?

montreal,
yeah, whateva? I was going to quit anyway. No hard feelings...
BTW. Is this still interesting to bebate in week's time? (rhetorical question, no need to answer)
