It's very sad that we can't unite with some positivity in this thread. :(

the dream lives on though.
- lnu0
...and all the news stations capitalize on the event and hollywood will too in a couple of years and meanwhile half of africa is HIV positive.
- kpl0
...and we ignore folks like lnu cos he's a total bonehead.
really, after what happened to blend it's amazing you'd want part of the action.
- lnu0
No no, no fighting.
What did I say to offend you? I thought I was just saying that it's sad.
- lnu0
the 'the dream lives on' thing was just a reply to mbr's post.

Final radio transmission between Columbia and Mission Control:
Mission Control: 'Columbia, Houston we see your tire pressure messages and we did not copy your last.'
Columbia: 'Roger, uh, ...' (transmission breaks off after the crew member starts to stay a word beginning with the sound 'buh.')
- kpl0
my fault...
that hiv positive comment threw me off. it looked like you were going off like blend did. didn't see the connection with mbr's post.

Found this. This is a tragety but something tells me it is a little to well timed.
Regardless, it is still a tragety.

"One potential focus: possible damage to Columbia's protective thermal tiles on the left wing from a flying piece of insulating foam from the external fuel tank that came off during liftoff on Jan. 16."

I don't know why i've posted this.

"Fact is that they could easily fly those missions unmanned. Selecting a crew is just a publicity stunt. What is the significance of the research done on board anyway?"
Its been a year since I was involved in a project revolving around this mission, so its a little fuzzy, but I do remember it involved growing cells in a zero-gravity enviroment (so they don't grow "flat" like they would in a earthbound petrie dish). They were also expermenting with how to use mist to combat fires onbaord space stations (since using traditional hose-shot water usually ends up doing more damage than the fire itself).
So yes, they did need humans up there.

i think everyone agrees this is a really sad event. but critiquing how the media has handled the event is a valid thing to discuss on newstoday. there is also something valid in questioning the media attention this is getting when up to 50 people were killed in an explosion in Lagos yesterday, and at least 40 people died in a train accident in zimbabwe. no one means any disrespect to the families of the astronauts. this is truly a loss. but being critical in these times is very important.
- kpl0
but then if you do, you run the risk of getting into the argument of whose life is more important and more worthy of coverage.
it's a valid topic but it's potentially tactless.
