fuck a Nike. what now? skateboarding will become a mainstream event? skateboarders are now athletes because some corporation like Nike said so and is interested in tapping that market?
it can only serve to dilute what has been a great passtime for kids who don't want the pressure of being pro athletes.
fortunately I think nike will fail once again. by the looks of this bullshit they got it wrong once more.
- lee_b0
i think skaters are just too smart to buy it. addidas tried and failed, Reebok tried and failed. they were even using gonz and matt hoffman!?
it just smells wrong, and people who know, know.

I totally agree lilbabyarm

I'm not really worried about the people that know. it the people that don't know who will easily be brainwashed into being interested in skateboarding.
if nike's marketing people ever figure it out you will see skate teams and coaches yeech.
nike is just a regular corporation with good marketing. no metter th face, they are still a corporation with sweatshops all over the third world.

hmm...well as a skater i feel that skateboarding is already mainstream ever since the xgames and gravity games come around..its all good it happens to everything no need to worry the one that are know adn are true will survive, nikes in it for the money, theyll fade out unless however they make a decent product then why should they be allowed to help in the progression of skating, thats what i think...whatever brings skating to the next will is fine, shoes are gonna do it. NIKE can do whatev they want its the skater natural talent that will help skateboarding so dont worry about skateboarding and skaters....WE'LL do just fine

if you check out the all white shoes in the dunk section, theres a lovely photo of one of those sweatshops with cute little speech bubles coming from the workers mouths..????
this is all a bit wrong

hey lilbabyarm, i don't think you know what you're talking about.
there have been paid pros in skateboarding for decades. so the point about kids not needing 'the pressure of being pro athletes' seems a bit late.
as for it being 'a great passtime for kids'. pick up any magazine, go to any skatepark in the country and you'll see people in their mid-20s and older skateboarding.
and the 'by the looks of this bullshit they got it wrong once more'. it's clear from the chocolate/zoo york/supreme graphics on the shoes and people like danny supa and gino on the team, they've got all the industry credibility they need.
i've been skateboarding for about 15 years on and off, and I'd buy a pair of those dunks. if you know anything about the industry you'll know that most of the other shoe companies out there are just wannabe nikes anyway. even skate shoe companies that started off looking altruistic sponsor linkin park and fred durst now.
all this looks like is nike basically calling them on it.
and whoever said "if nike's marketing people ever figure it out you will see skate teams and coaches yeech"
were you being ironic?
there have been skate teams for decades too, and still are. sure they don't have coaches, but they all have team managers - even your local skate shop probably has a team.
as for the site, yeah it's not amazing, but as for nike's place in the industry, they've been here for a few years now and their 'market share' will continue to just grow and grow.
- lee_b0
didn't Savier have somethiing to do with nike? i just remembered something from a while back
- CAJTBr0
yeah, they had some deal where they could use a bunch of nike's technology. i don't know if they actually gave any of the company over to nike.
- huphtur0
savier == nike
hurley == nike

I think I know exactly what I'm talking about. I've been skating for 21 years straight and still am. so don't even talk if you are an "on and off skater" as you claim. that alone tells me you ain't a real skater.
but to answer your points I agree skaters are not "kids" in the litera sense. but you don't normally START skating in your 20's you start when you're a kid (and skate forever or until you fuck up some body parts). besides fuck skate parks too. too many groms and why should I pay to skate? skating a ledge is more creative. than being boxed into some sanctioned area 90% of which are built by city planners with no idea how to make a good skate area.
from my experience the type of kids that get into skating are the ones who aren't into organized school sports. it's a "sport" they can get into and progress or have fun with at their own pace without parents meddling or setting up rules or subtle pressures to go pro and make a living off it. in fact parents don't usuall.y want their kids to become pro skaters. all the better IMO.
very few pro skaters make a decent living off skateboarding so the general feeling I interpret is that skaters skate because it's fun. which is why IMO skateboarding is special.
so because nike this time around, tried to buy their way into the scene by mimicking chocolate graphics still means they are suckers (and that you are a sucker for claiming nike is legit because of this). also, just cause they had the money to buy out some pros doesn't mean shit either. what person would turn down a shit load of cash?
skate teams are more or less loosely organized homies. they don't have rules or coaches they just get together and tour. skate contests have grown more and more pointless over the years and they don't mean shit to consumers.
nike tried to enter the market in the early 90's and failed because they aren't of skater ilk. take that sweatshop page on their fucking site. it shows you ritght there how out of touch their marketing is. but it's sure to attract numbskulls who think skater run around yelling "dude" and "skate or die"
nike has good sports marketing but skateboardintg is so much more than a sport. I hope they fail miserably.
