- I would guess a movie about the populous rising up against a dictatorship government would not have been allowed in China until more recent years. SciFi or not.ETM

I think this is either going to be star wars painted with the cliched Hollywood brush (running from explosions, over-acted drama, cringe-inducing one-liners, etc), or it will be the stuff every one of THIS era's Hollywood big-budget movies aspires to - a masterclass in blockbuster one-upmanship.
What I do NOT think it will be is the tender, light-hearted, endearing, and uninhibited tale that was seemingly only capable of being delivered back in the 70's and 80's. I don't know if it's really significant to this film but I do wonder sometimes if, apart from the iconic star wars world and special effects, that's the elusive detail that made the originals so special.
- JJ Abrams' Star Trek films prove he's very good at pacing action, story and humour, so i'm hopeful it will be more captivating than the average Hollywood junk.spl33nidoru
- I agree with spl33nidoru, but still have the same worries as you, SJ.monospaced
- This being said 70s and 80s audiences were much more naive than today's, it was a cotton candy era for the west, so although endearment is possible...spl33nidoru
- naivety is probably not.spl33nidoru
- Cotton Candy era for the west?? The 70's created some of the more gritty and brutal films to this day.ETM
- In real life, there was the fallout of the vietnam was, crime was rampant in large cities, economic depression, gas crisis etc.ETM
- *was = warETM
- Star Wars was a welcome spectacle and distraction... not simply because they were naive.ETM
- I'm talking about entertainment + youth-oriented programs. The new hollywood you're referring to (?) suffered greatly after Star Wars (Friedkin's Sorcerer).spl33nidoru
- I agree with you it's because people were looking to escape from their worries in the late 70s.spl33nidoru
- not sure what else to compare it to , but this needs to be toy story 3_niko
- I am predicting "JJ lens flares" out the ass!utopian
- i wonder if they'll hold on a shot for more than 1second.inteliboy
- Well, no one had ever seen anything like it before. The fact that they hold up at all with those effects is a miracle. They were brilliant but primativejtb26
- But back then it was advanced and complicated as fuck.jtb26
- I honestly think his 2 star trek movies already took a dump on what hollywood would have normally done with them.CygnusZero4
- If they had some shit director, imagine how easy it could be to fuck up star trek, but they were pretty solid. The scripts were very well written.CygnusZero4
- I predict this will either suck, or it will be good.kona

How many times will JJ Abrams use his lens flare effect in the movie?
My guess is is at least: 12 times
- wow this joke is not old at allinteliboy
- I think given his over use of the effect it's a fair game to pay on this movie. I just watched a super cut of all the trailers and guarantee you're way under.jtb26
- *play. I'll say 152.jtb26
- I don't understand, does JJ Abrams use lots of lens flare effects?monospaced
- utopian - you are so on point 90% of the time - you have let yourself down here.fadein11
- as lens flairs were a big part of the original trilogy I don't actually give a fuck - 7 more sleeps xfadein11
- it was a style choice. Though god forbid it be done to the uber nerd franchise like Star Trek. Hence why this joke is parroted on the net.inteliboy
- CygnusZero42
Might be some lens flares in it but I didnt really mind them in the star trek movies. Both of them had good stories and acting, not shity dialogue or anything, more than you can say for most of what Lucas has done so the dude gets whats important in a movie. I can live with a few lens flares if the story is solid and the actors deliver. The guy is on top of the world right now. Guess people have to find something to nitpick on the internet.
- < thisfadein11
- Ill take some lens flares in favor of scenes shot at flat angles saying shit like, stop the fighting and let diplomacy resume. lmfao lucas is awful.CygnusZero4

Pros: - Laser effects
Cons: - Harrison Ford's fake teeth, Jabulani ball droid would get sand inside and stop functioning (R2D2 had tracks for a reason), ridiculous lightsaber hilt, same old tactic for the destruction of the bad guys' ship, very out of place main protagonist, voice sounds awful, the girl has British accent for no reason, storm trooper uses back massager as weapon, amateur melee combat.5/7
Will watch.
- One would assume the "ball droid" is a sealed unit. The original trilogy was full of random british people.ETM
- British accents were generally people of power. English accents were people from the outer rims (luke, han, chewy).kona
- British and English accents mean the same. Did you mean 'American' accent? :)ETM
- Half of the fucking Death Star was filled with folk from the UK - including Vader and The Emperor.face_melter
- It's like they made a pitstop at Essex on their way to Yavin and picked up a few hitchhikers.face_melter

‘Star Wars’ Premieres to Enthusiastic Thumbs Up in Hollywood
Director J.J. Abrams’ widely-anticipated “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” screened for the first time Monday night and the initial responses were, to the relief of fans, overwhelmingly positive.
Actress Geena Davis let out a whoop from her seat in the second row of the Dolby Theater balcony, as soon as the film ended, “I loved everything about it,” she said. “Especially Rey,” referring to newcomer Daisy Ridley.....

So... according a text message from my (somewhat elitist) friend, a graduate from London film School, and a film reviewer on a Danish newspaper, who just saw TFA:
"It's... unneccesary. That's all i'll say for now".

- "There is a shift in tone that brings the material closer to the feel of a Steven Spielberg film ...not entirely, to the good." Hollywood Reporterjagara
- "It won’t save the world, not even Hollywood..." New York Timesjagara
- "A somewhat thin, derivative story that ... doesn’t exactly fire the imagination anew." Varietyjagara
- "A good movie, nothing more." Village Voicejagara
- "Like far too many franchise films today, [it] is too invested in planting seeds for future movies instead of telling its present story succinctly." Ain't It Cojagara
- "TFA boils down to a couple of genuine lump-in-the-throat moments, and those are due to nostalgia. The rest? Seen it, done it, been there" Movie Nationjagara

Apparently its pretty amazing.
- CygnusZero40
The story leaked? Guess its time to log off of fb for the rest of the week.
- can imagine some cunt will post the story/plot in this thread without warningBluejam
- Seeing it tomorrow night at midnight - the story is pretty obvious from all the trailers - but I avoided Luke bits so have one surprise :)fadein11
- from the leak I mean.fadein11
- The story isnt obviously to me at all. They purposely kept out the main plot elements with the Sith.CygnusZero4
- We dont even know anything about that guy Snoke. Not even what he looks like.CygnusZero4
- its all in the leak - Reddit is the place to be... really doesn't bother me knowing the story - read the kids novels before seeing Empire and Jedi as a kid sofadein11
- used to it - they used to release those before the films bizarrely.fadein11
