It's really unfortunate that there were no witnesses and no record of what actually happened. Just one man's story and a dead boy. To confidently cry "racism" is hard to accept in the light of little to no evidence. For all we know Trayvon said something derogatory and instigated the whole scuffle. I'm never, ever advocating the result of what happened, and I'm not saying Zimmerman was right in any way, I'm just saying that the whole story will probably never be revealed.
- good point!utopian
- I agree. I think the race issue is real but without knowing the full story we're all just guessing.Glitterati_Duane
- But take away racism and there was still a messed up scenario. A small unarmed kid was shot but a larger grown man.Glitterati_Duane
- I can't think of anything an unarmed kid could say to make me want to shoot themGlitterati_Duane
- Have you been watching the news? They're are partial witness accounts.ETM
- absolutely nothing justifies the shooting.colin_s
- @colin, you might never know. Once again, I'm not trying to justify it, just saying that we can't know.monospaced

@ Utopian. Geraldo does have a good point. My parents used to warn me about not dressing "professionally" at work when I was kid because of the way black people are perceived. I still stick to that today. I wear a tie a lot in an industry where most of my colleagues dress far more casually. Part of the reason for that is because I like to dress that way but another part is that sadly my race lessons my credibility and I'm aware of that. On the other side, I grew up listening to hip hop and tend to dress like that in my down time. When I'm relaxing I should be able to wear whatever I want the same as anyone else. This shit has got to stop. I'm not breaking any laws so I refuse to change who I am because "society" is afraid of my race.

- A very fair and balanced response, unfortunately both sides play against it or use it their advantage when needed. Sad but true.utopian

It's not true to say there are no witnesses. There are several witnesses but they only have accounts of what they heard. However, they have an affidavit from Trayvon's friend/girlfriend he was on the phone with as Zimmerman was following him.
---
“He said this man was watching him. So he put his hoodie on, said he lost the man.”She went on to say:
“I asked Trayvon to run, and he said he was going to walk fast, I told him to run but he said he was not going to run.”She said the man caught up with Trayvon and said:
“Trayvon said, ‘What are you following me for?’ and the man said, ‘What are you doing here?’ Next thing I hear is somebody pushing and somebody pushed Trayvon, because the headset just fell.”
---Add to it that the 911 dispatcher asked Zimmerman not to follow, and not to leave his vehicle. I don't get how he is not being charged.

as read on twitter:
"If teens can't wear hoodies because of unfortunate stereotypes based on appearance, then Geraldo should probably shave that rapist mustache."- Every time I read "Geraldo," I hear Beavis pronouncing it.waterhouse

any, any, any excuse for the murder of this kid is absolute bullshit. fuck your hoodie arguments, fuck any sort of possible confrontation (which would have been wholly instigated by the motherfucking murderer). the kid would be alive if this piece of shit didn't follow him, suspect him because he was black, and then shoot him because of it. fuck any argument against these points.
i normally try to be very objective and hear all points, but the fact of the matter is that a guy saw a black kid and got suspicious and even if his argument would be proper - that he has a massive weight advantage but somehow this kid was able to overpower him and hit him - shooting treyvon was beyond a last resort. fights happen. this was murder. the police chief should be fired, the police department should be put under investigation, and most of all the shooter should be put on trial for murder in the first. he saw, he followed, he killed. that's premeditated.

i'd wear a hoodie too if it was chilly & rainy and was used to warm orlando weather.
what you wear shouldn't affect if you get shot, rather what you do.

- maybe they should kill me and claim self-defense if they feel so strongly about it.doesnotexist

Stand you ground law is kind of like in Clint Eastwood movies where you can shoot and kill someone because you got in an argument
Seems insane but the NRA is lobbying to make this the law everywhere

bullsh!t. This was no accident. It's a hate crime pure and simple. And I'm appalled that the jackass who killed him isn't in jail. It's outrageous.
