Fun to read a non-tech person try to explain thing he doesn't understand

- I know what you mean, a few gaffs. The point of the article is that it's not only a technical decision...kingsteven

as long as i can read my comics on it who cares if its flash, i dont like DC anyways..

I never liked DC either, but haven't read a comic in 25 years (yup, one of the old ones on here!).
I did visit an Apple store today and looked at the iPad. Kinda cool, but what's the use of surfing the web if all the Flash sites just come up as black?? I was quite surprised there wasn't at least a "this device doesn't support...".
That's a deal breaker and I think we'll hear some big fuss as people start to discover that.
For example, Zillow, one of the largest real estate websites, uses Flash for it's graphs and charts (which is 90% of the website). That's a pretty big audience to eliminate!!
On an iPhone, no biggie, everything is too small anyway, but on a iPad there is just no excuse.
Just annoying, imho, already tired of my 3D apps and Autocad not running on a Mac. Jobs better be careful about kicking out the real estate, architecture and development businesses.

We already know all this. The question now is if Adobe is doing anything about this? What's their plan?
Maybe they can say that iPad is not allowed to show any images saved from Photoshop. Anyone who understands programming, is there a way for Abode to do that? Some device that would be embedded in Photoshop images that would block it from being viewed through an iPad?
What is Abode doing about this? What are they just waiting for Jobs to retire?- I would say that's pretty hard. That's a blocking issue vs a no-support issue.jfletcher

I agree with formed. It's kind of ridiculous to have to download a app when there's a perfectly functioning website.
The ipad seems like it would be the perfect device for mini-comics and zines, but the app pipeline seems like the wrong way to go about it. How many illustrators know objective C and have the patience to go through the apple store's vetting process, or the money to pay someone else to do it. For comics, at least, old school javascript and HTML can get the job done.
- i am pretty sure the ipad supports html and javascriptephix

There was a rumour flying around the office today that adobe are possibly going to sue apple..anyone else heard about this??
- ukit0
Forget who's right or wrong here. In general, if you try to "piggyback" off what another company is doing, you set yourself up for a fall whenever they decide they don't like what you're doing.
Look at what happened with all the third party Twitter developers now that Twitter bought the Tweet iPhone app and are going to dominate that space themselves.
- But in this case if people made thousands of apps, and they are sold in the app store - surely apple benefits anyway?tOki

what specifically would adobe being suing over ?
- if they did?Dodecahedron
- "it's going to sue" is such a vague statement..Meeklo

I've heard the rumor as well. I'd guess it would be some sort of anti-competitive complaint, but not sure they have much going for them.
I'd also like to point out that there are a few other cross-compilers that are similarly screwed in this decision, it's not just adobe.
- technically if you convert an app from one language to another manually with your man brain, you are breaking the rules lol.tOki

Who is Jobs Steve anyway?

"what's the use of surfing the web if all the Flash sites just come up as black??"
Seriously how many sites do people use that actually use flash bar video ones? Once the video sites switch over this wont be a problem at all, Flash is just used for crappy online promos like movie sites (the sort of shit we make but wouldn't dream of actually fucking visiting) and Flash games, which are a fun diversion but without even work with a touch screen.

GFY Steve Jobs!

We'll see, my money is that they incorporate Flash at some point. Peopel just dont' know now and will be like "why doesn't my site show up????". Once the word gets around it'll look pretty bad for Apple - having this snazzy computer but you can't view websites that you can see on a 10 yr old desktop.
I'll hold out for the goodies and compatibility. Maybe the competition will come up with something, but judging by their answer to the iPhone I am doubting it (sad how the rest of the industry still cant copy apple with anything worthwhile)

There's only one loser in all of this. We the consumer.

This is a pretty simple business model that others, including the dreaded Microsoft and current new media darling Google have been using for a long time: content, via specific applications, drives customers to want more.
The (impressive) apps library assembled by Apple is top heavy with crap, but so what? Momentum drives new business and new business is what you want to survive. No one could argue that they haven't earned their chops via the engine they perfected under iTunes, et al.
Regretfully Apple is very much "Northern" hemisphere, first world country based and that will ultimately be the larger issue. Come work a couple of years like I have in Asia and you'll see the utter dominance of Flash on websites, especially commerce-first entities. Apple has virtually made no penetration in this marketplace, where, oh, I don't know, one third of the planet now lives.
That'll be their next challenge and it is going to be an interesting ride, especially if the Chinese and Indians say "Apple, who?"

If Apple is digging their own grave, let them do it. What's the point of bitching about it? I mean, people are going on and on and on about the lack of Flash support—which, from my point of view makes perfect sense because the technology is a little buggy and processor-intensive—but nobody is forcing them to purchase the iPhone or iPad. So, when I hear things like "one loser in all of this. We the consumer" I have to call bullshit. Go buy an Android, use your laptop, nobody's stopping you.
- +1 as long as you have the ability to chose exercise it...DoktorDavid
- we ALL have the ability to choose, do we not?monospaced

I mean, who the fuck would buy a tablet or phone that doesn't support Flash? If Apple were to release such a tablet or phone, they would fail miserably, especially since the competition has been supporting it for a long time. I mean, they can't expect to actually sell one, so what are you worried about. Oh, wait...
