"people are going on and on and on about the lack of Flash support"
By people you mean Flash Developers crying because they can't add "iPhone App Developer" to their CV.

^ No. I'm referring to the general public.

LOL @ Steve Jobs calling Adobe lazy
- i think it's great for a CEO to get so personal and make comments like this...ideaist
- Companies keeping other companies in check is the best thing for business...ideaist
- I agree, ideaist.monospaced

so what's going on here, don't have time to read the whole thread?
Is it a re-hash of the old apple vs adobe thing,?
SYNOPSIS PLEASE!!- same ol' shitmonospaced
- apple wants complete control...and the internet...just too big and complex for thattwokids
- thanks mono, that was the clearest I could have expectedgeorgesIII

My hunch is that Apple is getting too cocky here. They think they can dictate how information on the Internet(!) gets displayed and that is an overreach. I can see Google / Microsoft and everyone else just moving in (as they already are) and saying 'look at us! Flash on phones, on tablets, no problem! and cheaper and more open!' and Apple will get relegated to niche status....again.
- monospaced0
^ Apple isn't dictating jack sh*t. They don't rule the internet. All they are doing is not including support for something, and like I said before, this isn't illegal or even anti-competitive.
And what's your big deal anyways, if you think they're making a bad decisions then surely the iPhone and iPad will fail. I mean, how could they expect to sell more than a handful of units with such a glaring omission? Hahahahahahaha!!!

Go be Flashy somewhere else.

Thanks, ernexbcn, interesting article.
I still think that they are overreaching because, while I understand the goal of control to create better products, what they want to control is too big. Controlling the internet by limiting the way things get created and then forcing people to re-create for you, is, I think, too much to ask.
The Zillow example is good. So when the google phones and other smart phones and tablets show their websites with no problem, a certain % of people will NOT choose Apple. And that will grow.
monospaced, Apple has owned the smartphone market because they were smart, and first to market, and could dictate what people could do. But everyone else is catching up and the rules change. Google, Microsoft, HP, etc...are big companies with deep pockets...and they aren't going to sit by and let Apple tell people what to do.

I bet you $100 Zillow is currently feverishly racing to complete an iPad-compatible Javascript version of their app, with their CEO all like, "WHY O WHY did we choose Flash??":D

"Apple has owned the smartphone market because they were smart, and first to market, and could dictate what people could do"
Are you f'ing kidding me!? They are the last into the phone market, and haven't dictated anything! Controlling how iPhone/iPad apps are developed and distributed cannot, by any sane or rational mind, be equated with "controlling the internet."
All Apple has done is make new devices, with awesome touchscreens and great UIs and unbelievable browser experiences. Just because they don't support Flash doesn't make them dictators. Wake up!
- Yeah I'd say the opposite is true...Apple was last to market, and dominated because they controlled the user experience.ukit
- thanks ukit...this twokids guy has been making really uninformed and strong statementsmonospaced
- twokids0
You guys are techically correct, but they did bring out the first good touchscreen, and you are correct, the interface did have a lot to do with it's success. They made a great, popular product.
But I still say they are overreaching to try to dictate how information from the internet gets created and displayed on their devices.
As innovative and as good as their products are...people have caught up and will push them into a corner. And with their inflexible stance, they will become a niche product and other companies will begin to dominate smart phones.
- are you a comedian?monospaced
- monospaced. you are an apple zealot....ive read your posts. i think you maybe work for Apple...no just another fanboise...twokids
- fanboise....twokids
- I'm not an Apple fanboy.monospaced
- HAHAHAHAAH....no YOU are a comedian...that is funnytwokids
- Well, based on your comments, you are a straight up hater, and an ignorant one at that...monospaced
- If you don't like Apple, then you shouldn't worry.monospaced

Actually I think Windows phones sell as well or nearly as well as iPhone and have for years. Other smartphones put together vastly outnumber iPhone sales. So it's not like Apple really has a monopoly in this area even now. I think it's more a matter of being the "thought leader" of the market, that's why everyone wants a piece of Apple.
- Yeah but no one actually used the smart features till the iPhonePIZZA
- twokids0
...and i am sure that Zillow is looking to get an app for the iphone/ipad...but they are not happy about it and looking hard at the real numbers today, and in future, for how important that will be.
What do they do...abandon their Flash stuff and say 'Whatever you say, Apple!' and abandon people who want flash?
that is the what Apple is doing, which IS ballsy...making people choose and say 'you want to play on our platform? here are the rules...'
- so they have to have TWO development tracks for their site? that suxtwokids
- pillhead0
I think Apple are digging there own Grave here, what happens when all the other phone makers out there get Flash running on there phones, where is that going to leave the Iphone, high and dry, that where.
- ukit0
Just going out on a limb here...no one is going to make the decision to buy an iPhone or an Android a Windows "Kin" based mainly on which one supports Flash.
Flash is becoming less and less important anyway. Let's say most sites solve the video issue, do you really miss Flash that much?
- its not Flash, its like 'you can't play those games...or use Zillow...and so on...twokids
- twokids0
- "grammatically incorrect"quack
- seriously twokids, it's the haters that paint Apple in this lightmonospaced
- quack0
personally i want my smart phone to be smart, not stubborn
- monospaced0
So, it sounds like you guys are concerned for Apple's success, worried that they'll go under. And, you're right to be worried. I mean, who the fuck would buy a phone or tablet that doesn't run Flash? They'd have to be batshit crazy to shell over money for substandard devices. If such a tablet or phone came out today that didn't support Flash, then they would no doubt fail. Apple must be fucking insane if they think they could sell even 100 of these things, ESPECIALLY since the competition has left them in the dust for years. Oh, wait...
