the Grand H1 and H2 debate continues.
Can someone break this down for me. I'm getting so much different information.
1. H1 is not important for SEO right? That's a myth
2. H1 is only important for the viewer
3. H2 is just as important for SEO as H1, they are the same.- ALSO, does PDF's matter in regards to SEO?

header tags matter yes, but they dont work like metas used to, and your header tags have to tie in with other things on your site such as; url name, and especially the copy so;
• not like this
<h1> subject 1</h1>
<p>subject 2, blah blah, subject 3, blah blah, subject 2 </p>
• like this
<h1> subject 1</h1>
<p>subject 1, subject one, blah blah, el-subject-o uno, blah blah</p>and all of that will probably change in the next Google algorithm update.
Google is fucking smart now, good well written content is your best bet for good long term SEO's.
- Fucking good tip. Funny, I'd thought of the reiterating the header but wasn't sure. Super useful moldy. txbklyndroobeki

H1 tags do matter for SEO theyre just not as important as they used to be and need to be carefully considered due to panda/hummingbird algos
h2s are not as 'important' as h1s
beware using semantic Hx tags in your boilerplate elements like sidebars and footers etc.

never nest h1s like moldero shows above. if you have more than 1 H1 tag on a page google will make up its own mind about your semantic focus which is never good when you're trying to steer a campaign.
- everything in <p></p> is just different written variations of the subjectmoldero

Yet, multiple H1 tags are allowed on a page when properly used with <section> and <article> tags, yes?
- Maybe just <section>ETM
- no. only one H1!mekk

I feel like a big part of being a successful freelance SEO consultant is undermining the confidence of the in-house staff and convincing the boss that they don't know what they're talking about. If the in-house staff makes a statement about SEO, you must quickly denounce them, no matter what it is they said. You need to act confident and imply that they are doing everything wrong.

Do you think that designers need to take this on?
- if you want to keep getting paid after the gig is done yes, SEO shit can last months after a project is donemoldero
- FML, i don't wanna get into it too deep w/ them. Just the basics should do or I'd be doing free work.bklyndroobeki

What is best practice or is this OK,
on the Amalgamated Bank site for example: https://www.amalgamatedbank.com/… they have some important info about an investment for retirement as a gif
"1.15 apy..." the gif is named
"IRA_product detail.PNG"
BAD for SEO or OK?
- sorry, typing fast here... lmkif i need to clarify what i'm asking.bklyndroobeki

Large site with lots of images some embedded in multiple pages.
In seo point of view:
Is is better to rename all images to their pages (like title etc.), and
make copies from images with multiple pages?

For my personal portfolio I've never used any H1, or P or any of those antiquated HTML things. Just div or spans rarely. File names, css classes etc all used random arbitrary names. My site url is my name, which I share with an average famous ish footballer. My site comes up 8 in the google search results after some wiki and news about said footballer. I put a few key words in a meta tag, but that's as far as my SEO went. Seems not really doing any specific seo works out fine.
- I'm guessing if I didn't share my name with a footballer I'd be ranking #1 in the results.shapesalad
- of course if you search design related words I'm probably result number 934,500...shapesalad
- ETM1
Ummm... the reason you are likely showing up at all is BECAUSE you share the name. Your "techniques" are daft (sorry, but they are). Meta keywords haven't even been viable/recognized by search engines for literal years and h1 and p tags are not "antiquated" html. They are fundamental, semantic HTML and always have been.
I won't even address that those "search related words" are what SEO would be targeting, not your name, unless your name is John Smith, and you have a real issue differentiating yourself. Basically you're saying if someone wants to find you online, they best already know you. Not really a way to find new business (if you want it).
- Sorry, came out marginally more harsh than intended...ETM

I hear and obey ;)
@sted - no keep the images centralised for page speed. doesnt hurt to have the filename as a keyword providing its relevant to the image tho.
@shapesalad - theres anecdotal evidence that semantic H tags help google to work outthe focus of the page. so best practice is to have 1 h1 on the page thats the title of the document, followed by h2 etc for any sub headings.
your ranking because you have an exact match domain with the footballers name? then that would be expected. its not great seo as a majority of searches would not be for you or your services. better to branch out imho
- hmm food for thought. never relied on people finding me via google though, but might explore that.shapesalad

is this still a thing? lol
ok I have a client that I'm trying to talk out of SEO and just do paid advertising instead, let me know your opinions
She's a real estate agent in a city where everyone is a real estate agent, more agents than people!
so the actual number is 48,000 agents, and say half are active and making a serious go of it. Let's say that of those 24,000 agents, half again are pushing marketing and paying for SEO.
That means 12,000 agents vying for 10 positions on the first page.
This is bonkers. All of them use similar strategies, keywords, are up on the latest google algorithms etc, so there is no way in hell that SEO isn't anything but a waste of time for 99.99% of them.I say throw some money at paid ads and get instant results instead.
- Tell her that SEO is going to be a long term tactic. She won't see any results for months. years even. Paid will get her top spot, but may be expensive (LTV)monNom
- BUT, every year as many realtors leave the business as join it, so if she sticks it out and is consistent, it may work for her.monNom
- Get a listing. That's the best form of advertising in that business.monNom
- ^google listing + there may be an opportunity to optimize for name + realtor or name + city » if you optimize the shit of the about page.hotroddy
- You get a lot of SEO *for free* from actually building a site with semantic markup, accessibility support, and good copy/microcopy. But few actually do this.evilpeacock
- a_REAL ESTATE_listing -Like a house for sale. People who want houses will come out of the woodwork wanting to talk to her. Neighbors selling will take her card.monNom

in answer to te above yes SEO is still a thing.
Your premise implies tat there arent x thousand of real estate agents vying for te top THREE paid positions.
PPC is like a tap. you turn it on and yes leads can come troug (still requires a lot of work) but wen you turn the tap off, that stops.
SEO is about providing long term value upper, middle and lower funnel. attracting people trough the life of them buying property and building trust. its part branding part direct sales. ppc is always focused on the very bottom tip of te sales funnel. some people dont trust te paid ads because of that.
