@version3 in an ideal world that would work... just look at wikipedia!
Sadly in reality we have to deal with bought links, content farms, link farms, black hat techniques and other dodgy dealings getting in the way.
even Wikipedia is working hard to keep their site where they want it to be.

@JazX yeah any site that opens with a contact form is just WRONG! lolz

I'd go with a common sense approach. Keep you markup clean and simple. Use relevant keywords in the copy and meta data but don't over egg it. Use friendly URLs and decent page titles. Only link to good reputable sources.
But most importantly, write good content.
SEO dark arts can get you at the top of the ranks, but your page will read and look like this, http://www.bigmouthmedia.com/

- @monoboy that doesnt go far enough... sites following this method die a deathtrooperbill

Monoboy, that's exactly my concern that suddenly in the race to be SEO'd the site ends up sounding like someone with key word tourettes.
Does writing the web copy, in order to SEO a site become part of the web designer/developer arsenal of growing skills now or is this something designer/developers can legitimately say is someone else's responsibility?
- vaxorcist0
SEO = witch doctor in many cases...
in my experience, page content / design has MUCH less to do with results than outside links to your page from good sites using good keywords/phrases in THEIR href's.... (i.e. it's not about you, it's about the links TO you)
- theres pleanty of bad designers/developers out there too but not all design is bad.trooperbill

I worked for a company that was once hired to DE-SEO-ize the content of a site that was so SEO-ified that humans could not read it.... and clean up the insanity that the SEO-witch-doctors had implemented... (don't ask!).... so we redesigned and re-wrote it and their rankings didn't go down, some pages went up, probably due to, uh, actual content and clean code ....

Yes, well I can see that extreme SEO does seem to create useless pages. But is tinkering with textual content the job of the web designer/developer these days?

Ok so a domain 'accidently' expires on a website. The domain is re-newed asap and site back online, but... There is now a ' this domain is now for sale' page indexed directly underneath the 1st result in google. The domain is now back under ownership but this for sale page keeps appearing in the search results. Is there any way of getting rid of this?? Tried contacting the site owner but no response,.. Hoping this might be the place to get some help?? Thnx

@jysta use an rpc service to ping google with your domain update.

Pretty decent software that you can use for Commenting.
http://disqus.com/ also used by SoundCloud at http://blog.soundcloud.com/2009/…
Works with everything.

Hmmm. I have tried stopping google indexing the page in question but I can only stop google indexing my own site pages in the Web Master Tools. This for-sale page is coming from another domain and web site altogether.

Google is testing a new project: local stores pay $25/month to appear directly in the search results (not an ad on the side).
