I primarily shoot everything I can. Stills, action sports, landscapes. I want a camera first and a video camera second.

I have been using my friends EOS-1Ds Mark III for awhile and love it. But am not dropping that $$.

    • I currently have a 30D.morilla
    • and hate it.morilla
    • what do you hate about it?Chief
    • after shooting my friends, it's hard to go back to it.morilla
    • that's a huge step up, 30D > 1Ds. i'd try to handle both cameras before you buy. rent if you can.Chief
    • hate was a strong word.morilla

    • you've got some great pics, morilla! judging by those, i'd say go with teh 5D. only the motorcycle shots would you see any improvement w/ the 7D... maybe.Chief
    • any improvement w/ the 7D... maybe. or you could take the money saved and buy some nice lenses, not sure what you already own.Chief
    • already own.Chief
    • sorry I miss typed, I have a 20Dmorilla
    • I just sold my 10-22 for $, I have a 50mm 1.4 , 28-135 & 17-85morilla
    • and thanks by the way. I think I am leaning towards the 5D, I just saw the price break and thought , hmmmmorilla
    • in a budget crunch at the moment if you catch my drift.morilla
    • budget is what has me leaning toward the 7D. More for lenses and a few speedlights.Chief

I'll say it again: 7D looks to be a fantastic camera for sport photographers who always bought 10D-50D series as a second or third body. It is fast, relatively small, light and the 1.6x crop will let you get some nice tele action going.

    I wouldn't swap my old 5D for a new 7D though.

What is it that you love in 1Ds that your 30D doesn't have? I mean, picture-wise.
It's probably a similar difference there is between 5D and 7D.

7D is a direct upgrade from 30D. My bet is it probably was codenamed 60D and rebadged to single-digit to appeal to the pros better.

    • Direct upgrade meaning coming from the same product line, there was 40D and 50D between them of course.raf
    • sorry I miss typed, I have a 20Dmorilla
    • the diff between a 20D and 1Ds Mark III is the size of the Grand Canyon.morilla
    • but that makes sense nowmorilla

I got my 5DMII only a few months ago and news of this didn't bother me because of the crop sensor. Remember you will always have the multiplier 1.6 factor for your lenses. 15mm = 24mm and so on.

I am happy with the 5DMII regardless if they came out with the full frame one. I think they will have the firmware update shortly to shoot in 24p soon. If not, I have found a rather easy work around that works just as good.

It's not about the latest and greatest, it's what you do with it that matters.

    • do you use the cineform work around?morilla
    • ahhhh, cool so they are doing a firmware update.morilla
    • no, the mpeg streamclip work around. And it's not official, but yes rumblings are firmware 24 soon.irrelevant

I dont think I will ever go back to a crop body, the canon lens lineup just makes so much more sense on a full frame body. 14mm, 24-70, 50mm, 85mm, 70-200 are really handy focal lengths but not so much on a crop body.

if you are experiencing a budget crunch, morilla, do you think the extra $900 that the 5d mkii will cost you will be worth it?

if you are not publishing your work in print or reproducing in large, large sizes, the 7d sounds like the better bet. and really - if you pixel-peep the 7d sample images, its 18 megapixels are pretty good. not sure that the 21 slightly higher pitch megapixels of the 5d mkii will make that much of a difference for you.

    • i am also in the same boat you are (almost) - i have a 30d and am considering upgradingbigtrick

I gotta admit, I'm no photography expert, but my brother got a 5D and I fell in love with it and its capabilities. We've been playing with video and this camera is amazing! I promised myself I'll buy me one butn ow, this new model came out and although is not a 5D, I can save $1000 that can go towards nice lenses. What would you do?

im just waiting for version3 to come out and say that you should just get the old 5D

i started with the xti and did some cool things with it for a beginner but i couldn't get over the crop factor of the sensor. I wanted to go full frame and got the 5dmkii. i see the 7d as a faster auto focusing smaller sensor 5dmk2. that isn't necessarily an advantage either. just depends on the usage...

I would look at which lenses you have or are going to use with it. Its not really about IQ as both cams are excellent in this regard but wether you are going to be using Canons L lenses or EFS lenses.

EFS lenses have better suited focal lengths for the 7D but if you upgrade to a FF body later you are going to have to buy lenses all over again. If you just buy L lenses for your 7D then you are going to miss out a fair bit on the wide end but will be ok with the larger zooms.

If you use the EF 17-40mm L or EF 16-35mm L on the 7D you wont find them wide enough and you are better off with a EFS 10-22mm.

EF 24-70mm L and EF 24-105mm L not quite versatile enough on crop body as its not wide enough to get a lot of shots. Better off with a EFS 17-55mm IS with the 7D. 24mm is wider on 5D than 17mm on 7D. Thats why 24-70 is such a handy lens on 5D.

50mm on 5D is great but bit long most of the time on a crop body. You would be better with a 35mm.

85mm is great on both crop and FF for portraits etc. Same goes with 135mm L.

70-200 is ok a zoom on both but sometimes a bit long for portraits on crop body.

Thats just my experience as I had a 30D and chose to buy L lenses. I decided it would be better to go to a 5D than to start buying EFS lenses to fill the gaps.

At this level in Canon's range Its all about the type of photography that you want to be doing. Its exactly like the 1D vs 1Ds choice.

The 1D is APS-H (1.3x crop), 10.1MP, 10fps great for sports, reportage, news where the fast continuos shooting speed and extra reach due to the crop are useful. Whereas the 1Ds is FF, 21.1MP, 5fps and more suited to studio, portrait and landscape work where a crop factor would work against you. Also you don't need as many MP on the 1D as the images it is designed to take are normally for magazines/newspapers and not blown up to billboard size as they often are with fashion and advertising work.

So if you are into sports/reportage/news buy the 7D you get 1.6x crop and 8fps. If you are leaning towards studio/portrait/landscape the get a 5DMkII with FF and a few more MP.

The thing to watch as mentioned above is lens choice. If you are buying the 7D and intend to be on an upgrade path to the 1D then if you purchase any EF-S lenses these will not fit the 1D (or 5D/1Ds). EF-S lenses can only be used with APS-C bodies.

Buy the 7D and use the extra $1200 to buy a plane ticket to somewhere you've always wanted to go. India, Africa, the Arctic Circle.......wherever. The photos you take on your trip will be better the ones you'll get with a 5D MKII at home.

    • just my 2 cents.Tungsten
    • YES! A portfolio is always worth more than a pile of $$$ gear!vaxorcist
