Thoughts? I was just about to go out and buy the MKII this weekend and saw this.

If you can't tell the difference right away, get a 7D.

7D is not full frame... but its good that it has 30,25,24fps video..

what's a good price for the 5D? body and the lens.
5D gets my vote because of the wonderful video capabilities. also, i know nothing about cameras.

yeah, pretty much the only big drop off is the full frame, but people who own the MKII are telling me big deal. They now wish that they have waited. Decisions.....

now that' i've read the article you posted, wouldn't 7D make more sense?
and "if you want a video camera get a video camera" argument doesn't necessarily make sense. to get the kind of picture you can get from this camera, you'd have to buy a video camera AND get a 35mm lens adapter which can run up to $2,000 more. with 7D or 5D you can get that video quality without additional adapters.

There's going to be another announcement before the end of the week. All of the 7D's bells and whistles with an FF sensor.

5dmkII > 7d in price and quality

I think the 7D might be missing continous auto focus when filming just as the 5d mark2. This makes it pretty useless for filming drunk friends or running kids..the usually stuff..

"If you can't tell the difference right away, get a 7D. "
sorry but I agree. I know very few people who own camera like the MKII and make full use of all it's features....and I know lots of photographers...
resolution and camera bodies are about the last thing I would say make or break an image

i guess my argument was based around how serious of a photographer you are. investing in APS-C sensors (the last of which for the 50d was pretty bad) means you're going to have to adapt and get lenses that suit that need. and then if you're ever thinking of going full frame, you need to figure on how much you want to spend now vs. later.
if all you're going to be doing is snapshots and fucking around with HD video, i guess the 7d sort of makes sense. there's always the rebel that shoots in HD.

full frame = no brainer. if you're not at the stage where you realise you need a full frame camera - i'd go with the 7D.

Seriously, if you're even comparing the 5DMkII to the 7D you might as well get the 7D because you don't know what the hell you're looking at.
- I know what the hell I am looking at.morilla
- Plus friends that are serious Pros are saying ehh, get the 7 and good glass.morilla
- They're saying that because you might as well get the cheap one instead of spending more money on the 5D.schjetne
- Also, if you read what I wrote, you'll notice I'm saying "Get the 7D".schjetne

exactly why would you "need" a full frame sensor? I have 20x24 prints made from a XTI sitting next to me with no visible grain...
what is the largest print you've made?
- it's not about resolution - the FF gives a certain depth that the crop sensors do not.forcetwelve
- it also captures colour tones much better. you might as well say the medium size cameras are no better...zarkonite
- I couldn't shoot the rockies at all with my 40D, too much contrast in altitude, my 5D works like a champ.zarkonite
- forcetwelve0
if in doubt - look at flickr groups of the 5D II, compared to say a 40D. compare the images - it's an obvious leap.

I see *literally* thousands of full resolution images from hundreds of professional photographers every day. A camera with a full frame sensor doesn't guarantee/change a thing. Period.
Good lighting and having a good eye are what make professional images.

- totally, but if you add a PhaseOne back to those skills you're doing better no?zarkonite
- sure if you need to make a big print.sikma
- Professional photographers make professional photographs, but good equipment doesn't hurt.schjetne
- Also, how many hours do you work a day? LITERALLY 1000's of photographs? Really?schjetne
- I see thousands. I'm not joking.sikma
- yes... stop the cargo cult! ,... and 39 megapixel backs are quirky... I've worked with them as a digital tech...vaxorcist

DIGITAL SINGLE REFLEX CAMERAS!!!
SERIOUS DISCUSSIONS!!!

Maybe I should post a LOL Cube or Calles in drag.

morilla, they're totally different cameras. think of the 7D as a properly updated 50D to compete directly with nikon's d300s. It's newer/faster AF will serve you much better if you do anything sports/bird related where you need fast AF and fps. the 5D, while much slower, will give you a better raw image due to its full frame sensor. like landscape photography? get the 5D. do you want something mainly for video with the ability to take nice still? maybe the 7D as right now it has more video capabilities. canon could change it with a firmware update for the 5D.
