As Designers do you/we care?
- full_bleed0
I design as a civilian employee for the U.S. Army... Our office has been pushing more paperless event marketing this month, even more than usual. Our monthly post magazine featured recycling and conservation as the cover story... and it was printed on recycled paper in honor of Earth Day.
In general I hate the idea of watching print die... but in reality everyday I see proof that it never will.

What does being a designer have to do with anything?
- We use print as designers everyday and alot just goes in the trash why not recycle itiheartfun
- < designer = humans, that's why.akrokdesign

IMO, Earth day should be everyday. Reminds of that time people turn their lights off for an hour, yeah that's gonna help.

/me thinks 'iheartfun' = uberdesigner.
A strange, random question. Who else??
- iheartfun0
Our Building actually just set up a recycling bin throughout every office and I have been telling my boss that we should recycle with all the printing we do just for comps but then they just go in the trash when they could be recycled.
Its great its just a small bit that helps!

We are the Green Generation.... or so the UN says
- baseline_shift0
Yeah, earth day seems like a PR scam for companies to seem 'green'. Its all marketing and buzzwords. You need to be cognizant of your waste all year.

"saving the earth... 1 day out of every year at a time"

I was listening to NPR in the car the other day, and a bunch of college students were recorded asking the president questions about anyting they wanted, and there was a large proportion of questions about sustainability and the environment... certainly more than from my generation... I was honestly surprised at the level of education/concern that some of those younger than me have about the world they live in....
- who knows if that = any real result though....BuddhaHat
- its called idealistic hippies... they forget about that when they turn around 24 and start liking moneyCALLES
- i really doubt anyone's going to just "forget about" our plightscarabin_net
- it's way too late for that, the previous generations made damn sure of itscarabin_net

I went to the earth day celebration in DC on sunday and it was pretty informative but a little drawn out. They put on a free concert but a lot of the people that came were of the "hippie" type...

I replace my tinfoil hat with a recyclable carton one for earth day.
I also fed my chicken tofu, does that make me a green person?
- pango0
what are we suppose to do on earth day?
- _me_0
since earth hour/day whatever - i make sure every designer shuts their computer down at night unless they're render-farming... it took a week or so to enforce but they now all do it without asking...
*does his bit

Earth Day was not created as a marketing ploy, but for many it has become one. Is that good or bad? Probably both. I'm as sick of 'green' marketing as anyone. The word is totally overused and usually misleading.
HOWEVER... As designers, I think we absolutely should care about sustainability because we possess the skills to do something about it. Design is about making things better, more efficient, more interesting, more informative. I think we can all be guilty sometimes of ignoring our conscious when a client pays you to sell their crappy product. Whether or not you care is up to you. But to think of our industry as only a marketing tool to aid consumerism is quite lame. If you actually care about making things better... "For a better tomorrow"... then do something about it.

- Oops... "conscience" not "conscious." I hate when people do that.joeth
