Update: I've been messing with Ableton live lite for two days now. Watching a lot of tutorials and so on. I can't believe there was not a 909 drum machine pre-installed in the lite version. I had to download the 909 kick drum from the internet. It still doesn't have that hard punch that I want but I will keep messing with it. Also my high hat and snares are from an 808 so they sound like shit when I mix the two, it's like they left out the essential dance elements on purpose. I'm learning to use the arrangement screen right now which is really nice.
- 909 Kick Drums, tons of those in Reason presets and the oldpanacea
- Download the drum machines package. All the DMs you could want.
JonWilliams - the Suite has 606 707 808 909 etc with variations, you get what you pay foridiots
- nice sounding drums is all about layering. a 909 kick for instance has the bass but not the punch, so layer with a more mid-range kick to get the sound you wantsine
- ... mid-range kick to get the sound you want.sine

Ableton is the winner, so nice!

a bit on compression/ limiter to get more of your drums
I'm still learning on all this myself
PS: we have a producer monthly meet-up here in SD, a small club near downtown is closed to public, and they give us a space to test our tracks on a big system as well as networking w/ other producers in the area, you should come down!
- Oh man thank you this helps so much! yes I'm down to go to the meeting!HijoDMaite
- youtube man, think about how many tutorials are out there, yes most of them are crap but still :)Miguex

I'm having production setup issues. I can't decide what I'd like to run through my Kaossilator for its effects.... granted it could be un-plugged and re-plugged, but I'm looking for a competent set up to work with & get used to.
I'm thinking the microKORG because I believe I can sync the midi to the Kaossilator from the PC then to the microKORG from the Kaossilator without having another midi cable running to the computer. That way, anything I play on the microKORG could be sampled/looped on the Kaossilator sharing the same source bpm (though it is limited to 16 bars). With the software that accompanies the Kaossilator it is easy to send/transmit loops to/from the PC for use in other DAWs. This way I know I have a loop played and made specifically for the set bpm.
But on the other side I want to be able to easily sample a computer or iPod or cellphone as the Kaossilator will loop anything. I wish I knew more about sound / mixing boards because I'd like to know if I could run an effects channel out of my board then trigger the effect with the Kaossilator? Hopefully, if correct, in theory I'd be able to apply effects to any audio into the board including a loop already playing back on the Kaossilator simply by arming it, also allowing me to loop anything connected to the mixer through the Kaossilator as audio plays directly though if an effect is not be processed on top of it.
I'm looking at the Mackie 802-VLZ3 and I see it has the INSERT on lines 1 and 2 but they are mono only, so kind of a loss using it on those channels, however if there was another model or option I should be looking for that you know of that covers all channels, please let me know.
This is more a thought / complaint question than a direct question or added information, but if you know anything about sound boards / mixers, feel free to jump in. I'm not too sure what all the alt outputs, sends, returns and submixes can really be used for yet, so ignorance has the better of me for now.

the people at Mackie are awesome, I just got off the phone with them. polite willing to listen and talk, he never told me what to buy, just what they sold that would do what i wanted. he explained everything and let me interrupt him more than once just so I could keep up with the info.
I wish I had known I'd be done with my sound card, I would have sold you mine :D I think I'm going to pick up this. Multi-track recording directly into Ableton and the guy was pretty confident I can use the line in on the Koassilator as the aux to all channels turning it up per track when desired so I don't have to unplug anything one it's set up plus the recording option of multi-track will be sick. I look forward to hearing the effects across all channels from 1 device. :D ... only $600 ...
- there is also an 8 channel version of this, the 820i, for about $400idiots
- the number of channels is up to you/ and set up. I have a 4 one, by behringer, not as good as mackie, but good for meMiguex
- i need the extra channels for stereo inputs, mics and guitars aren't my thing,..idiots
- so I have 4 stereo inputs here and 4 mic/guitar ins for my friends when I record themidiots

hmm don't know if anyone mentioned it already, but I used FruityLoops (FL Studio) to make some beats, it was pretty easy and straight forward. The other options listed (ph reason, ab live) are kinda complicated to use imho, would require some training and musical knologe
if you wanna just have fun, go with the FL Studio
- Miguex0

I can understand reason being more complicated for those who never used hardware before, but if you have used at least a drum machine and a mixer, Reason makes an excellent transition from Hard to software, everything works like the real thing, even the wiring between devices on the back.Fruity loops is simple enough as well, people are quick to categorize it as a toy, but lots of famous producers making BANK use it all the time, so it's never about the software, these days you can make entire tracks on an ipad while you are taking a shit, the only thing it matters is if it works for you and the final result

Message me or post info about next meet in SD I'd love to go.

I stole this from a friend who borrowed it from another friend of his. I'm thinking this video, a drum rack, some samples, an idea of the type of track desired (and no concern for velocity sensitivity... the only drawback here) and you're good to go for loop making galore.
I've already built the setup and have my metronome pulsing in the top right corner. I'm going to build a drum rack of probably 32 samples to take up the left side, then probably split the remaining 28 cells between 4 ambient sound, 8 bass, & 8 lead loops from the kaossilator with 8 assorted samples. Maybe use the 3 on top next to my metronome for a siren rewind and a dnb horn or something, either way, this is a good little controller to play with, also, more triggers on it than my APC40.
- I had one in my hands the other day, these look really nice.Miguex

rusko uses sony acid. it was my first app, i used it again last year and tried out their midi capabilities and video options (btw ableton does video too)

Went to see ill Gates' workshop, and I was blown away.
It's 4hs long, mostly him doing a very inspiring talk, how to organize sounds/ racks and 128s, the little time he spent on ableton showing how to do shit, I realized I only use $4 worth of ableton, and I've been using it for at least 5 years, and had a couple of tracks released. If you can catch it in your city, go see him. Even if you don't use ableton, to be honest I found his workshop incredibly useful as a designer more than a music producer, very cool stuff!

mmm...looking at the Akai MPD18 vs. MPD26.
never use it before, so maybe go basic.question, now. the mpd18 is usb and no midi. am i suppose to get a usb/midi soundcard box, or what ever it's called.
