the worst thing you can do is use your mouse to program in beats and select preset sound banks. left brain nonsense.
the best thing is to cut up samples, actually play beats & melodies, be creative, use your software/computer as a beefed up sampler & synth.

yeah... i see ableton live lite comes with a sampler and basic sound library, but apart from getting your own sample library together, you're probably also gonna want to start looking at vst's (virtual instruments)... software synths and effects.
there's loads of free ones out there to play around with. http://www.kvraudio.com/ is a good resource.
vst's is a whole new discussion on it's own :)

I made the purchase for $138. It has begun.

my setup/workflow is almost completely audio-based. i started out in cubase, then moved to sony acid pro when version 6 was launched. i've used ableton, but prefer to stick with what i know. i can use acid pro with my eyes closed.
acid pro and sony soundforge forms the basis of my setup, along with turntables, a big ass record collection (been collecting and sampling for over 15 years), my own sample library, keyboard controller and a few vst synths and effects. i arrange/compose in audio (also bounce my midi tracks down to audio).

Curious aobut that iMASCHINE app. I've personally stuck to Reason and my MPD26, coming up with stuff like this. http://soundcloud.com/jamesworks…
I've known about Ableton Live for awhile, which is what my friend uses, but I haven't made the time to try it out...not to mention a Korg MS2000 that I've had for several months, but have yet to set aside time to learn how to use. egh.- this sounds great man. would you suggest the MPD26 instead of the akai mpk mini?HijoDMaite
- they are two different pieces of equipment.idiots
- Thanks, Hijo—although I can't recommend one over the other, as I've only had the MPD. idiots seems to know what he's talking about.mcmillions
- talking about.mcmillions
- really dope beatsherm

I personally do not like the MPD series, if you are going to just get a drum controller get the Korg padKONTROL, best value for the price IMO. There are several stories about pad insensitivity on the MPDs, as well as hacks/fixes to regain that sensitivity. So far as there is a guy selling thin strips of plastic to put into your MPD between the pads and the sensors to prevent them from sticking. I read this story a lot before I bought my padKONTROL and never had the sensitivity issues, though I ended up exchanging the padKONTROL for the Maschine Mikro.
- Weird, never noticed those issues on the MPD. Then again, to say I under-utilize the MPD-26 is a hell of an understatement.mcmillions

- i know a producer here in town that loves his MPD too, just wanted to get my opinion out there from my researchidiots

This is a different tool
than this
the important thing is to think about what you want to do, but again as an experimental controller to get you going I can't think of anything better than the akai mpk mini unless you entirely abandon the idea of Ableton and go with the maschine or mikro which as mentioned earlier comes with its own library of sounds, vsts, software etc
- im going the akai mpk mini route.HijoDMaite
- idiots i think you need to teach me how to use ableton live lol—i'm making music via shitty workflow in reasonmcmillions

It wasn't mentioned before, but you're able to use your computer keyboard to play the instruments in Ableton; the center row A-L as well as the top row; WER, TYU, and I think IO maybe P
These are representative of the white and black keys of a piano, though you are losing velocity sensitivity, you can still tap out patterns to a metronome instead of clicking a cell in a pattern then playing it back
