valid points, cola.
i was merely objecting the way in which people tend to jump to conclusions about cause and effect. that was much more disturbing to me then the deed of handcuffing the child. i can imagine there was no other choice at that very moment, altho i would have exhausted all other less violent options, imo.
i am glad you did not point fingers here.

cops aren't fucking babysitters. i'd handcuff her ass too.
and her parents.

yeah, just seed the anger. a 5 yrs old in handcuffs - this is by far the most stupid thing i have ehver seen.
- vburo0
and pascii made exactly the point.. resorting to adult manners of punishment and restrictions only further seeds trauma and anger (and thus violence sooner or later).

i know you don't see this BUT FUCK YOU FOR SAYING I WAS GOING TO BEAT UP A 5 YEAR OLD GIRL. I said smack, not smack around, not beat up, smack.

in philly a 4 or 5 year old girl was handcuffed and removed from school because she had a large pair of scissors in her backpack to work on a project...this was a good child who didn't get in trouble (iirc)...the police later made a very public apology to the family...
this child (the one in the article) had a prolonged, destructive, violent outburst...for fear of legal action for physically holding the child back a restraining device was used...bottom line...the kid was out of control, attempting to hurt people, and absolutely had to be restrained...why the police had to do it and not her parents is a question i can't answer

the correct action would have been for the school to contact the parents, insist that they come get their daughter and while they (the parents) are there, clean up the mess she made.
then sort out punishments, etc.
*points finger at NT, police and parents, respectively:
you don't hit someone else's kid. you don't put a little kid in handcuffs. you don't raise bad humans.
- scarabin0
handcuffs ARE NOT punishment.
THEY ARE RESTRAINT
get this through your heads people

someone tell vburo to check his mail or just repost this will ya?
thanks

I'm sure there's no doubt in the mind of any NTer here, that this is a Bad-ASS-child.
I'm not bothered to discuss whether authorities were right or wrong.
I deem myself unqualified to have a reasonable perspective on the matter i.e. no kids, never helped raise kids, I'm not a teacher or a law enforcement officer etc.
However, let's put a gun into the hands of this five year old girl. Today, this isn't unrealistic at all (in the US).
Usually that's what it takes to warrant this kind of forced action. Of course, it could also mean a life.
I say prevention is often better than the cure (however, these days this idea is being turned on it's head).
Times are changing and there are alternatives to beating a child to set them strait (I didn't say BETTER alternatives).
With that said, I have thanked both my father and mother for showing me that a leather belt can do a whole lot more than hold your trousers up.

even certain form of "adult" restraints can be experienced far differently in the mind of a five year old child. a child that young can not rationally order the chaos that she caused and the restraints and treatments that follow. the associative capacities of the human brains are far too under developed at that point in life.
once a child is fully able to do that, and thus even able to rationalize emotions, then you can consider more mature forms of restraint and punishment.

sick. i have never been punished with beating from my parents. maybe my mom or dad gave me a smack on my cheek but they never showed me punishment with abelt or closed me in a dark room. i thank god for that.
a generation who lets their children p-e- sit in front of the tv the whole day and punishes them for something they didn't learn them not to do is in my eyes complete unable to bring the humanity a little step further
- dan_dan_dan0
I've never been punished for something I didn't learn.

i didn't refer to you directly. i just want to give you on the way that a lot of parents aren't able to give their children a proper education and in my opinion that is the source of many social problems in the western world today.

What frustrates me is how the parents jump on a lawsuit. Come on, action had to take place I don't think that the police did anything that extreme. What is with Americans and lawsuits?
At least they didn’t use a taser on the child.

But in all likelihood they could have used other measures. I think the problem is lack of training in these situations.

i come from a physically repremanded family. we understand respect. this girl needs her ass beat. i doubt this is some anomoly in her life, i agree she probably disrespects her family who doesn't educate her properly. but we are discussing the restraint of a person who was destroying school property. years ago the principal, if not teacher would have been able to take a paddle to that girls ass. she would have straightened up.

just toss a big bucket of cold water on her, that will cool her off =)

I'm shocked how many extremely stupid responses have been posted in this thread!
NO, IT IS NOT OK TO HANDCUFF A 5 YEAR OLD!
But I guess that some people just don't get stuff or maybe you are just paranoid...
- version30
YES, IT IS OKAY TO HAVE AUTHORITIES HANDCUFF A CHILD IF IT IS DESTROYING SCHOOL PROPERTY. ESPECIALLY IF THE LAW STATES YOU MAY NOT LAY HANDS ON THAT CHILD TO DISCIPLINE IT

Why is this on video in the first place?
Who had the camera? Why was it on?
