RE: babydick
"Cool story. Let's talk about 99% of people who sold nothing and got buttbanged by minting costs"
on Ethereum, this is 80% true. But we aren't minting on Ethereum, we are minting on Tezos.
On tezos the minting is about 40 pence. That's why it's growing so fast. People got sick of Ethereum gas fees.
- Thanks for the info, 40 pence is a good price.babydick
- So you mint for 0.4 then sell for 1?
Wow, to the moon indeedgrafician - I know they don't have £ sterling in Romania, so let me help you. 1 tezos currently = £1.89 You mint the NFT for .40pence(£0.40) say a 10 of 10. You then sellcherub
- all 10 copies of that fractionalized NFT. You make 10 tezos profit. Do the conversion back, see how many £ you made.cherub
- It you want to make 1/1, truly truly unique NFTs like what is common on Opensea, you would need to pay the 40pence each time you mint. But on HicEtNunc theycherub
- usually do multiples. 15/15 is common, so is 50/50 and so on. The lower the better, usually. Those NFTs you are only part owner.cherub
- so they made up another horseshit currency to replace the other horseshit currency because that horseshit currency became too expensive.face_melter
- ^u mad, doggie?cherub
- pretty much what face says.. do u have a number on that 80% true cherub ?... coz i would like to see that...the numbers is supposed to around 98%...neverscared

Lots of criticism over pissing money up the wall.
Would be interested to know how many of you guys- pour money into souping up their cars they'll never get back
- pour thousands into music making machines that they're never going to get an income back from
- buy fuckin' SUPREME gear
- Have expensive eating/drinking tastes ... it all comes out the same way(Sidenote: All of the above are in no way GOOD for the environment)
Why do you do it?
It makes you happy. It's a hobby. You feel part of a community. If I can make art in my chill time, rather than watching Netflix that keeps me happy and sane. If I end up making a few quid from it then 'woohoo!'.
----
I will say I have learned my lesson of minting on Foundation when GAS is high and have pissed away a chunk of money doing this (about £300) but will get that back at somepoint.
- i kinda agree...
spend your money on what you want and fuck the rest...

- I don't get the Buying part either. Why someone would part with megabucks for a jpeg, but they DO and they love to collect.microkorg
- And I'd never thought myself a collector but on HicEtNunc i've found myself collecting pieces.microkorg
- While if you enjoy stuff that ruins the environment I would say DON'T go for it.

The big difference I find between Bitcoin and NFTs is ideological. Proponents of BTC, for better or worse, are all about forward-thinking. Decentralizing currency in the face of globalized capitalism is practically a digital era survival instinct.
The big irony about NFTs is they are more market-based in their essential concept than anything else, providing the concept of ownership above any other function. That's practically antithetical to the base idea of art as it serves in its social function.
I think with all of this technology, we're basically apes using rocks to smash things open. At some point, these ideas will be refined into hammers, but for now it's all a blunt instrument, and we're just hitting random shit to see what happens. The monetary stuff I understand, but NFTs seem relatively foolish in the scope of concepts for human creative development.
- never put something on the market which is not well refined ....neverscared
- ...unless it's first press olive oil.Nairn
- The thing about NFTs is, they're a single use case for the block chain. Ultimately, an NFT is a smart contract. A smart contract can be used for any type ofmandomafioso
- public record. Cardano is working with the Ethiopian government for school registration. But they could be used for anything from voting to real property deeds.mandomafioso
- @mando yeah i get that it's interesting tech, thus the 'rock' metaphor- i just don't think it's appropriate as an idea as some savior of art for the digital agecolin_s
- It's more of an outlet for interactive and digital-based art. I can own a canvas but what if I want to own a sick ass 3d generative piece? NFTs ftwmandomafioso
- u dont own the piece... only a token with zero owning value value .. u can also buy sick ass 3d generative piece like the industry did before crypto.. itsneverscared
- slower, but better.neverscared
- NFTs are a symbolic gesture, like farting on a cat. Immediately satisfying, but ultimately pointless and entirely ephemeral and gestural.Nairn
- very true, the token idea is funny for an atom second, but degrades into useless and then to toxic waste...neverscared
- when u include the operating system its running on.neverscared
- The difference between them is that they aren’t remotely comparable. Bitcoin is a commodity traded on exchange. NFTs aren’t that. They aren’t even a thing.monospaced

Once, people who owned viral photos made little money from them. Now, the ‘original’ can potentially sell for an enormous sum. But are buyers savvy investors – or unwitting dupes?
- You know there's a problem when original needs quotation marks.kalkal
- Considering I also have the original and paid nothing, I’m pretty confident they were nothing but dupes. 100% witting and willing dupes.monospaced

Maybe the amount of cryptocurrency being spent on NFTs is evidence of the worthlessness of cryptocurrencies rather than the value of NFTs.
Cryptocurrencies and NFTs are an absolute disaster for so many more reasons than the ecological.
- Yup. If there's something that'll bring all the markets down, it's crypto. Just like the DotCom bust, it's all supply/demand, no substance.formed
- Ofcgrafician
- NOTHING like the dotcom is that in the dot coms there were actual dot coms and businesses with employees, products and innovations we still use. Ffs.monospaced

How a 12-Year-Old Made Over $160,000 in Ethereum on NFTs in One Day
Tweens love the blockchain: 12-year-old Benyamin Ahmed's Weird Whale NFTs sold out in less than 24 hours.
Weird Whales, a collection of 3350 whale-themed NFTs, sold out in about 9 hours earlier this week.
It’s part of a project by Benyamin Ahmed, a 12-year-old from Pinner, England.

Anyone grab a Damien Hirst then?
https://www.heni.com/I like this project. I guess it's about legitimising NFTs. He's selling the NFTs of each of the 10,000 physical pieces then offering the physical piece but only if you burn the NFT.
