fisheye,
It's so funny you posted that. Last week, I heard someone comment on how dated the Tesla design is already. Once they said that, every time I saw one I couldn't unsee it. I've always been indifferent to them and probably enjoyed the interior and the digital UI than the outside, from the few times I've been in Uber's that were Teslas.
But now I find it crazy that they haven't redesigned the cars AT ALL. Every one on the road feels like a design that's a decade old.
- I guess everyone sees the UI part of the car, including me. I wonder what would be an outcome if the designer Lesnik from Mercedes Benz would be involved...fisheye
- ... this is exactly the vibe I would go forfisheye
- Wouldnt buy a tesla for the looks. Would be buying it for the supercharger network and associated tech.microkorg
- The electric Mercedes look like trash. A new tesla design is coming soon, there are leaked photos online.Frosty_spl
- @Frosty The point is elsewhere.fisheye
- Why would a redesign be needed? Just for the novelty? Innovation never sleeps?
Redesigning is just part of the market model.palimpsest - There are finally a few decent-looking EV's, but until recently the S was the nicest, by far, looking EV on the market.formed
- Tesla has been super smart - unique designs gives them a brand presence, even if most aren't that good looking (stll better than crap like the Mustang E).formed
- If sustainability is part of the brand a sustainable design is one that doesn't need to be updated every year.palimpsest

I used to be a Tesla fan but since a few years they are just cutting corners wherever possible.
First of all these are not cheap cars. Model 3 was supposed to be an affordable electric car and even the basic specs version is pricey.
But it turns out the manufacturing is often piss poor, many customers complain about faulty stuff, badly assembled parts, water leaks or other things missing.
And now I read they are removing more features (sensors, etc) to reduce costs while the prices remain the same.
At the same time over the past years they kept increasing prices and also the price of the "FSD" feature while the quality is going down and still no "Full Self Driving". Latter has just been the same since few years and no real progress.
It's good that other brands are starting to catch up so Tesla gets more competition.
- 100%. Tesla 3 feels so cheap. iPad dashboard is an awful UX. They’ll have brand power for years, but other car makers already make better electricsnb
- Tesla does need to improve, but they have the momentum to do it. All the other brands are praying something sticks, but so far, it looks like a transition withformed
- nothing really sticking out (though I do LOVE the Audi e-tron RS)formed
- Tesla deserves a lot of credit though, it’s probably incredibly difficult to break into the market. It’s impressive, even if the cars are kinda shittynb
- People don’t buy cars that stick out. They dream about them, but almost everyone buys an SUV, minivan or pickup truck that looks exactly like all the other onesnb
- People don’t want to stand out from the crowd. Majority of cars are available in black, white, 3-5 shades of grey and maybe one color (red or blue).nb
- *two colorsnb
- I was appalled when I first saw a Tesla at a showroom years ago, none of the panels were fitting right with varying gaps in between. And this was a showroom carBeeswax

Just picked up a Model Y for my wife... It's pretty rad. The UI is well done and has lots of fun stuff to learn. Plus the performance is on another level compared to combustion engines. It's like tapping a bolt of lightning when you step on the accelerator.
- I just got to go for a ride in one and that is true, a real kick in the pants when you hit the "gas" pedal.lemmy_k

Danish union joins strike action against Tesla by Swedish workers
Pressure grows on US electric car company to grant collective bargaining rights to employeesDenmark’s largest trade union has joined strike action by Swedish Tesla workers, piling pressure on the US electric car company to agree to collective bargaining rights for its employees.
Members of the Swedish trade union IF Metall have been on strike for six weeks – attracting support across industries, including from postal workers, painters, electricians and dock workers who have all launched secondary action.

Tesla’s new car-building process could be a huge industrial breakthrough
/ Tesla is close to implementing a new die-cast process that could significantly reduce costs and simplify vehicle manufacturing beyond the abilities of the rest of the industry.- instead of repairing / replacing one of the 400 parts of the frame, the entire thing is trash now? any minor changes requires an entire new mold.imbecile
- the energy required to pour and safely cure something so large would be immense. how much does tesla pay for these articles?imbecile

ICE vs Electric CO2 emission comparison
https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMYv5EDej/…- Until a battery can be made w/o requiring large inefficient size, amounts of rare materials... apples to apples ICE still better for emissionsprophetone
- Especially if you really do a old for environment and run a car for 500k or buy exiting used cars...prophetone
- One day though when car battery is a hydrogen dark matter baseball that never needs charging, electric will be the better optionprophetone
- Tricky though b/c we need to get through this stage of large and inefficient car tech to get to the smaller, low impact, efficient, more powerful techprophetone

- Walk, bike and cheap public transport, and we're done.OBBTKN
- The only way we are going to get to a battery doesn't require rare materials is if we support electric vehicles now. Otherwise we are stuck with fossil fuels.microkorg
- It's only electric car manufacturers that are going to research into and finance these batteries of the future. Shell isn't.microkorg

Tesla owners didn’t buy a car: We bought a set of beliefs Elon is trashing
"I bought a red Model Y in 2020 but more than that I bought into a brand that aimed to do some good in the world. Now I’m embarrassed to get behind the wheel"

What a cockhead Musk is...from the bloke that made $52bill in 2018 IN SALARY.
“Last year, Elon Musk parted ways with one of his top deputies at Tesla Inc., TSLA 2.75%increase; green up pointing triangle a French auto-industry executive named Jerome Guillen.”
“Mr. Guillen worked at Tesla for roughly a decade, rising to oversee the company’s car division. He was rewarded with equity grants that swelled with Tesla’s valuation. By the end of 2020, Mr. Guillen’s unvested equity in the car maker was valued at around $600 million, according to an Equilar Inc. analysis.”
“As their long relationship broke down, Mr. Musk made an unusual request: He asked Mr. Guillen to forfeit some of his unvested equity in the car maker, people familiar with the matter said. Soon after, Mr. Guillen left Tesla.”
“Exactly what went wrong between the two leaders couldn’t be learned. But some of the people familiar with the matter said one issue of broader concern for Mr. Musk has been that some employees were making more from Tesla than he thought their contributions merited.”

With all the money Musk has, he could hire word’s top car designers and make cars on way higher level design wise.
As I observe them on the streets for a while now, I think more and more that Elon did the concept sketches and had anyone who suggested anything different shot in front of the designers. It seem to me the cars are like something that Elon would design. Or something that is designed like Elon. They have everything but class, style, emotion, statement. Those cars just look so generic. If tested I would probably think it’s Hyundai or Kia. He could really hire the best one or the best one hundred industrial designers in the world.- I think putting the best 100 designers together would be a fucking disaster. Can you imagine the flouncy diva tantrums. Automotive designers are the worst.Morning_star

"A unique uncontacted tribe could be wiped out by a massive Indonesian project to produce nickel for electric car batteries.
A vast mining scheme on the island of Halmahera is part of Indonesia’s plan to become a major producer of electric car batteries – a plan into which Tesla and other companies are pouring billions of dollars.
But nickel mining is set to destroy vast areas of the forested interior of Halmahera. These forests are inhabited by 300-500 uncontacted members of the Hongana Manyawa tribe. If mining goes ahead as planned, they will not survive the destruction."
