Chinese government reportedly would rather TikTok shut down than be sold

    • Those algorithms worth a lot...grafician
    • ^ especially the parts that log data and transmit over to the CCPKrassy
    • ^not really, algos do mostly data sorting and stuff like that, shows you what you like based on variables, engagement, etc.grafician
    • also the data tiktok gathers from what I've read is at device level, you need to create an account but who knows what's in itgrafician
    • but it's used by a lot of young ppl and an adversary nation knowing what your youth wants and likes goes a long way for future strategiesgrafician
    • plus you get to serve them all kinds of stuff, propaganda videos, etc.grafician
    • no wonder nations are failing, kids these days think 99% about social media, not books, relationships, their future etc.grafician
    • tiktok is an incredible information gathering app, but so is Fb and instagram or snapchat, keep in mind thatgrafician
    • tiktok has the best recommendation algos in all of social media, that's why they worth so muchgrafician
    • I wonder what the exact scenario people are imagining is though. One day you're watching a cat video, and then Xi Jinping shows up and tries to convert youyuekit

TikTok Parent Says Clueless About $5B Fund That Trump Claims Will Help Teach 'Real' US History

President Donald Trump suggested Saturday that the TikTok deal he gave his "blessing" to involved a $5 billion education fund for the United States, but ByteDance claims it didn't hear of this until media reports emerged.

What Happened: “They are going to pay $5bn into a fund for education so we can educate people as to the real history of our country. We are getting very close to that deal,” the president had told his supporters on Saturday in North Carolina, the Financial Times reported.

ByteDance, in a Chinese social media post on Sunday, said it was the first time it was hearing of such a fund, according to Reuters.

Y’all know that Tiktok is banned in China, right? Chinese citizens aren’t allowed to use it. This ain’t a joke.

    • India as well, no?scarabin
    • Don't they just have their own version?yuekit

By banning TikTok with no notice or opportunity to be heard (whether before or after the fact), the executive order violates the due process protections of the Fifth Amendment.

IEEPA lacks any intelligible principle to guide or constrain the President’s action and thereby violates the non-delegation doctrine, as the President’s overbroad and unjustified claim of authority in this matter confirms.

TikTok is not and has never been offered in China. There is no connection between TikTok and the Chinese government. Nor does the Chinese government exert any control over TikTok Inc. through its parent company, ByteDance. The key personnel responsible for TikTok, including its CEO, Global Chief Security Officer, and General Counsel, are all Americans based in the United States—and therefore are not subject to Chinese law. U.S. content moderation is likewise led by a U.S.-based team and operates independently from China, and, as noted above, the TikTok application stores U.S.user data on servers located in the United States and Singapore.

    • It's also banned in India.shapesalad

    • Uh china exerts full control of any company on their land. Just as they did saying no algos will be solddeathboy

Jesus Christ, I never knew this, bad enough the Chinese are using it to spy, but opening portals to netherworld hellscapes and allowing people to be possessed is next level.

Putting aside whether TikTok is good or bad...is it weird that everyone just accepts the U.S. president has the power to unilaterally ban something?

Having travelled in some less than free countries, you get used to having to use a VPN sometimes. In Indonesia you can't access Reddit, possibly because conservative Muslims are offended by gonewild and other porn.

In Thailand you can't read the Daily Mail because apparently at one point they insulted the Thai monarchy.

And of course in China US apps are banned "because national security."

However I never thought I'd see the US become a country where you don't have access to something the rest of the world does.

    • I posted an article, read it. It's not the president, the president just takes the credit...grafician
    • And it's not a ban of tiktok, it's just a split of it, so the US can handle the data of US citizens. EU and Russia and China do the same.grafician
    • Apple Chinese users data is hosted in China, for example. And so on...grafician
    • It seems that Microsoft will handle the data of Western users. I really don't know if this is bad or worse tho'grafician
    • Btw you can use tiktok without a user, it's pretty anonymous. Sure, except when it copies your clipboard data like phone numbers, CC numbers, nudes, etc.grafician
    • all that spy shit is BS, this is all about $moldero
    • But this was also the case with Facebook, LinkedIn (btw a Microsoft company)grafician
    • I dont even tiktok r whatever, just seeing through the BSmoldero
    • @moldero really? tiktok has access to your entire phone contents and your kids' too!grafician
    • Also stop fuckin using Huawei tech also! Huawei security is so bad, literally anybody can own you like those kids owned twitter!grafician
    • China's taking over is inevitable, you can thank our 1% & fuck island pedo Bill for expediting that processmoldero
    • google and FB have our info too? their just not US companies, this is money plain and simplemoldero
    • ^said that wrong but you can figure it out lolmoldero
    • decipher my pre-coffee words!moldero
    • ;)moldero
    • lol...I think it remains to be seen exactly what the "ban" is...it could be a complete ban, sale to MSFT or nothing.yuekit
    • China is not taking over shit. All their stuff comes from us. They just copy us.grafician
    • Tiktok got so popular because they didn't follow any rules. You can't develop and grow something like tiktok in the West, with all our bounds and checks man...grafician
    • Well they got to 5G first right? I agree with moldero, it's ultimately about money. There is huge hypocrisy on both sides.yuekit
    • China cries about getting banned, but they ban everyone else over in China. USA says TikTok is spying for the Chinese government but there is noyuekit
    • concrete proof of this...whereas it is 100% proven that US tech companies surveil the entire world for the NSA.yuekit
    • @yuekit yup, always assume everything is saved somewhere these days, act accordingly ofcgrafician

  • babydick-2

I stay away from this Chinese bullshit crap, and Twitter. Fuck that.

    • Twitter is actually the only social network that really counts. You don't start revolutions on instagram or tiktok or whatever...grafician
    • Twitter is actually great for keeping track of stuff the news doesn't cover. Just don't get dragged into pointless discussions on there...yuekit
    • Revolutions? The fuck you're smoking, homeboy? You're one of those antifa delusional fucks?babydick
    • @babydick dude, twitter is used by all dissidents from HK to Egypt to whatever. Twitter is basically THE social network.grafician
    • @yuekit exactly! There were still tons of videos and posts about the protests in the US long after CNN and other news agencies stopped coveringgrafician
    • @babydick if you're really in Poland, yes it's not that popular in Eastern Europe, but use it anyway to get what happens in the worldgrafician
    • Alright, if Twitter isn't banned there and provides freedom of speech, then it's all good baby baby.babydick
    • Also, fuck antifa.babydick
    • @babydick Poland was actually the first country occupied by fascists, are u trollin or?grafician

So I gather the US is going to ban every App coming out of China? Otherwise what a waste of time and complete diversion.

    • it's just a simple revenge for trolling during the Tulsa rallyzaq
    • So trueinstrmntl
  • utopian4

I'm all for killing a Chinese State owed tech company in the USA. USA tech companies are not allowed in China i.e. (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc)...so fuck them!

But the real reason that Trump wants to kill TikTok is because wants revenge on TikTok for trolling and killing his Tulsa Oklahoma Rally.

Dotard is our very petulant man-child.

    • Yeah that's a perspective some others have raised these days as the main motive this is happening nowgrafician
    • wait until he finds out it was really the kpop community on twitter that actually mobilised to sabotage the rallygrafician

"Exclusive: TikTok's Chinese owner offers to forego stake to clinch U.S. deal - sources"

"NEW YORK/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - China’s ByteDance has agreed to divest the U.S. operations of TikTok completely in a bid to save a deal with the White House, after President Donald Trump said on Friday he had decided to ban the popular short-video app, two people familiar with the matter said on Saturday."

    https://www.reuters.com/article/…

    • This is why it's usually better to wait a few days after Trump announces something...the reality may or may not live up to the headline.yuekit

    • We go against stupidity, not apps! No matter the age of the users...grafician
    • It’s not that, drgs. China banned almost every app from the west. (See video I just posted). We should ban TikTok too.NBQ00
    • didn‘t you (or we, as europe was involved in it) call China a totalitarian sensoring dictatorship for banning apps?uan
  • deathboy-3

phones and social media the worst thing to happen to the world. Only feeds and promotes growth on shallowness and narcissistic traits. And completely alters perception of reality. It disconnects any real connections but helps create a small army of the worst types of people in society

    • but its not so much tech as social media. they go hand in hand. but i think if no social media a phone is more basic utlility.deathboy
