After 14 years with mt, I've pulled the plug - they've become a horrible company. I've moved primarily to Digital Ocean and have a few EC2 instances on AWS. A bit of a learning curve compared to Plesk but way more powerful and you won't have to deal with notices that your server will be migrated automatically in week like you get with mt.
- I was even getting a 50% discount on mt from the newstoday discount code from 2004 and it's still not worth itspot13
- Cloudways->DOArmandoEstrada
- I'd love to know how much business MT got for that 50% offer - the NT community's not gigantic, but I bet a significant % took it on.
I know I did...detritus - I think we are going to do a test on Cloudways...looks promising.dbloc

its funny how everyone complains about mt and i have used them for years with zero issues
- $700/year planpockets
- Isn't MT just a brand wrapper for GoDaddy these days? I thought MT proper was looong-since dead?detritus
- I've still had very few issues with them on their DV servers. Still never tried Grid though. Which I think most people complain about.ETM
- I remember managing some sites on a bad grid server cluster. Shit was always going down, but then other clusters were fine.BabySnakes
- im using dedicated wp mt hosting..pockets
- Is this for your personal site, or do you do a lot of hosting with them?dbloc
- if he's paying $700 a year for personal hosting, he's doing something wrong.detritus
- lol, yesdbloc
- MT was bought by godaddy but they retain 'their people' (well... those that have stuck around). Service def. suffers during their internal 'upgrades'.PonyBoy
- i left (mt) last year after several recurring issues from their side that they said were resolved, but alas... gone after 15 years.imbecile
- 700 for 10 sitespockets
- lol you guys are assholespockets

I've been using Linode for over 9 years now, more than happy.

Media Temple went on my B-list 1-2 years ago. I've had some really bad experiences with their grid service since around that time.
I've had good experiences with SiteGround lately, but for WordPress powered websites I prefer WP Engine.
You get what you pay for in the world of web hosting.
- wp engine is superb, pricey but v.good. shame it is just web though, no email etc.
have wanted to move a few clients onto it but too much hassle with no emailfadein11

Media temple email servers are seperate from the grid so they aren't very good if you are working with auto generated emails. (ie. if you are trying to send email via PHP).
For instance there is A WP plugin for restaurant reservations that isn't compatible on Media Temple and works fine on Hostgator.
I also used a PHP library that uses auto generated email scripts and it's super SLOW on media temple. If you call them they will confirm this!- I wish I could switch but I have 10 years of work on MT. Dont have the time to switch over 20 websites.hotroddy
- @hotroddy. I don't think we're switching too many over we just need something to use from this day forward.dbloc
- There's a bunch not compatible with MT's grid email. Can't even get Outlook's calendar to work.formed
- Switching shouldn't be too bad. If you're using something like backupbuddy it's pretty easy.noneck
- Also, set up an account with a service like Mailgun to handle your WP emails. Works way better, and gives you nice stats on deliverability.noneck
- thanks. useful tip but sometimes you are just looking for plug and play.hotroddy

Digital Ocean or Linode would be my top choices. If it's a low traffic site, you can probably host it on Google App Engine for free. There's a bit more of a learning curve with App Engine though.

I use Site Ground after switching from Web Hosting Buzz last year.
https://www.siteground.comAbsolutely not a single problem with them or a moment of downtime at all, and their support team is fantastic. Great quality of interaction with them. I had something go wrong on my site last week and they were super on top of things to resolve it. That sort of thing goes a long way with me.
- Yup, i left from over 15 years at (mt) Siteground is greatmoldero

Can we separate the different hosting types, and dig a bit deeper?
I mean what's your specific suggestion for:
dedicated
vps
and shared hosting
maybe specialized for wp, m2, laravel, node, etc
- colin_s0
bump for 2020.
i've been using webfaction for years, but last year they were bought by godaddy and i was just notified it's being 'integrated' with tsohost in the UK / user accounts trasnferred / webfaction shut down.
i was really happy with it, so of course this is the way it goes.
anyway, i have a couple weeks to decide on the migration or to find a new hosting solution. who is using what these days? i have a few domains and email accounts to worry about, nothing too high bandwidth and mostly for personal / social use.
- I'm in the same boat. I went with Opalstack, they're previous Webfaction employees that started a new company. Happy so far but still haven't gone through theESKEMA
- nightmare of migrating everything. Have to do it sooner than later..ESKEMA
- ^Guess we'll do the same, I don't want anything migrating to godaddygrafician

Mine charges me 9 bucks a month for php support. That seems stupid. I’m in the market
