Windows are in a brilliant position to turns things around. Google did it... No one ever thought Google would lead the way in design as they now do.

Come on Windows... sort that OS out and I'm in. I'd fuck Apple off in an instant if there was a better option.

    • My thoughts exactly. Windows 10 is great on the surface but still needs work in the nitty gritty.fadein11
    • For me Windows just needs to shut the fuck up. It's always finding ways to interrupt me that Mac OS doesn't do. Yes, I know I plugged in a mouse. Yes I know.monospaced
    • haha yea. I haven't spent much time on the OS so I'm open to it... I hope it's good. I could only ever handle a few minutes on windows in the pastset
    • The preview complaint is a valid one, but other than that, Windows works well. W10 is still, imho, the best design. I am still hoping for a Surface Phoneformed
    • and with this momentum they could be planning a superb marketing strategy - get people to "like" MS and the design and a phone would just solidify thingsformed
    • I boot into Windows 10 occasionally to do some gaming. Each time I have to wait for all kinds of auto updates and stuff. Otherwise, it seems super solid over 8.monospaced
    • ^ how often do you log in then? Updates are once a month and mine are installed within minutes..mekk
    • probably once a month ... but it's not just windows updates, it's nvidia updates, other driver updates, security things, and on and on ... is that normal?monospaced
    • One I found a way to bypass the login screen on W10 and not require a password, I became much happier too.monospaced
    • Because updating drivers and getting improved performance is such an inconvenience. Fuck me. Apple's GPU drivers are absolute shit.face_melter
    • And only officially getting driver updates via OS updates? Fucking clownshoes.face_melter
    • I love how personally people take the mac vs windows thing. It's an operating system... you didn't give birth to it.set
    • my problem with microsoft is the OS.ApeRobot
    • this would be awsome if someone could hackintosh it.yurimon
    • It wouldn't though. They'd need to rewrite some sort of OSX iOS hybrid as well...set
    • I'm sure that's coming, but right now simply putting OSX on it would be shite.set
    • I use both osx and w10 on daily basis and I'd be hard pressed to say one is better than the other. w10 has a cleaner design imo.zarkonite
    • I agree. Why can't we just fuck off all these faulty OS' and return to the abacus?futurefood
    • Funny how nobody mentions the huge privacy differences between OSX and Windows (which is now "free" so they have to monetize it somehow).evilpeacock
    • Mac OS = insanely sandboxed and encrypted, causes frustration for some. Windows 10 = sandboxed to app store, but tracks and shares your usage data, serves adsevilpeacock
    • I've just noticed that I meant to type Microsoft not Windows in the original postset
    • @mono the nvidia drivers are mostly just important for new releases, they update the driver for every new big game. No need to follow unless you install new..mekk
    • Apple dropped the ball with OSX, imho. They had the chance to make the iPad Pro a Surface competitor, but chose to lock you into iOS.formed
    • It would take a lot to remake OSX to support touch and no point in having a iPad the size of a monitor.formed

    proper review :)

    • yep, that's a great reviewFax_Benson
    • if apple had made it, everyone would be dribbling over it. Microsoft stepped up and kicked apples touch bar butt.fruitsalad
    • people are drooling over this ... including me. Unfortunately it has some of the same issues as Macs: e.g., not upgradeablemonospaced
    • can't wait the first hacks for this to allow using any pc with the display....sted
    • Reviewers right - they should sell the monitor seperately.detritus
  • pinkfloyd5

How long before detritus tries to draw manga with his willy?

  • monospaced2

I really wish they offered this as a standalone monitor/puck with steep hardware requirements (CPU and GPU) so that it can work into the future with various hardware. How cool would that be?

    • exacly. i really can't understand why nobody can make a solution where you can just replace the cpu/gpu/hdd/ram combo somehow.sted
    • gpu can be external why not allow that to connect to the built in display?sted
    • exactly! ... I should be able to build a machine, and attach this AMAZING cantilevered 28" 5K display with touch screen and custom pen/puckmonospaced
    • they could sell just the display and puck hardware for $2500 and it would fly off the shelvesmonospaced
    • ^ If demand proves, maybe they will in time.ETM
    • They probably will, esp since Apple just gave up on the monitors! It'd be a good way to kick some more sand at their wound.formed
    • I agree I'd rather have the whole monitor rig and then my own box connected.ETM
    • I'm guessing that the low margins of the PC market are going to push more towards the less upgradeable, especially as things get smaller.evilpeacock
    • They're stupid.monospaced
    • Every year the "PC" market shrinks. A lot of companies seem to be trying to head this off by changing their strategy (Microsoft for sure).evilpeacock
  • monospaced0

Anyone know how upgradeable it is? Can you swap out video cards, cpu, ram and hds easily? I'd hate to think they went apple on this and closed it off or used non standard sized parts (or worse, soldered anything on).

    • The 980M card isn't really that fast especially when pushing 4K res, and that's the highest end model.monospaced
    • Studio's internals aren't upgradable like on a tower PCsted
    • judging from the size of the computer I'd say no upgrades other than hard diskernexbcn
    • I would like to think the RAM and SSD would be changeable - using PCI SSD's for example.face_melter
    • i think the SSD is replacable, ram maybe: http://www.technobuf…sted
    • Damn. Eventually would suffer the same as macs then.monospaced
    • Exactly — the whining about Apple's non-current GPU, etc. and non-upgradability also applies to Surface products. This appears to be the new PC market.evilpeacock
    • Computers are becoming appliances. You have to spend more out-of-the-gate and if upgrades are needed, completely replace every 2-3 years.evilpeacock
    • Even more reason to go hackintosh then.monospaced
    • Dell just released an XPS that looks like a Mac from 15 years ago: http://www.dell.com/…formed
    • "Designed to grow with you". Lots of irony going on the PC vs. Apple worldformed
    • i imagine the number of people who upgrade and swap things (not including the hard disk) on a laptop are very small.inteliboy

    • our gadgets would end up like this if it was up to forums and reddit: http://vignette4.wik…inteliboy
    • This isn't a laptop.monospaced
    • true. you're right.inteliboy
    • It comes down to the amazing form factor and the idea of replacing the WHOLE THING just because you want to upgrade performance one day.monospaced
    • Because honestly, I think the form factor and touch function is amazing.monospaced
  • err0

The only problem I have with touch is its not accurate. Remember the first time you accidentally multitouch rotated an image in PS Its like nearly impossible to get it straight again with multitouch.

Input devices like the dial solve this.

Even the touch bar on macbooks looked like they would have the same problem.

    • hold shift while doing - jobs a goodun.fadein11
    • Press Escape and it resets. I thought everyone knew that?face_melter
    • lol. Yea I hate it when you hit caps lock.. Have to restart the fucking computer to get it to go back to normal.set
    • I know how to reset it now. Im just saying remember the first time!err
    • How many times do you use this feature on purpose?err
    • I agree err. annoying as fuck. something similar happens to me when on my browser where screen does a bezerk zoomhotroddy
    • is there anyway to calibrate the touch?utopian
    • Rotate canvas? All the time - to edit masks, paint/draw/spot heal around objects, add effects. Of all the things Adobe added to PS it is my most used.face_melter
    • I just pivot my screenGnash

This thing can look at sexy as it wants, but its success will ultimately come down to how good the software is. While there probably will be some support for design software, at that price, not many people will buy => developers will not bother building good experiences for it

MS is also making the same mistake here as the original surface. Trying to support desktop and touch on the same device. That will always be a compromise. This is why the the iPad is successful, it only does touch.

    • The iPad's successful because it brings idiot-level computery to the multi-masses.detritus
    • the way I see it, if they make this work amazingly with the Adobe Creative Cloud, then it's going to be a hitmonospaced
    • And how does it do that? By only solving one problem.inv
    • I suppose that's up to Adobe to adapt the Windows 10 install to take full advantage of the touch/draw/puck hardware of the Surface Studio. Could be a collab.monospaced
    • Using the puck to zoom in/out and pan, change brush size, switch layers etc. would be mint. If they do that, then i'm in.face_melter
    • Adobe suite already works great on Surface - they just have to do the puck bit.fadein11
    • if it only supports MS software noone will buy it obviously.fadein11
    • I have no doubt the Adobe Suit will work great, thinking more about other stuff.inv
    • To some degree this seems to compete with Adobe's Slide hardware.evilpeacock

Windows just needs to fix their file explorer.

This is ridiculous. And it doesnt have the quick (spacebar to preview) or rename multiple files.

    • we can rename multiple files on mac? shit, i need to take a break from adobe and explore my OS 'n shitmoldero
    • text renders so damn shitty on windows.inteliboy
    • Contextual file rename/renumber/pref... has been in the Finder since Yosemite. I use it a hell of a lot, though Name Mangler still kicks ass.evilpeacock
    • Yeah as a visual designer Mac OS is way better for this kind of stuff. I can't live without the space bar preview.monospaced
    • @intelliboy: Everything renders shitty. That's one of my main complaints with Windows. OSX/Ubuntu are nice and smooth.section_014
    • rename key is F2 because how silly is the enter button for rename instead of execute file?!mekk
    • use adobe bridge if you need space to previewmekk
    • @intelliboy one can choose the rendering on win ;)mekk

I like it but the mid-level model works out to about $5,200 cdn after tax - ctrl alt yikes!

    • you're paying for the Microsoft namemonospaced
    • yep it's pricey for sure.fadein11
    • yep, we're paying to have the microsoft priceGeorgesII
    • but aimed at top end of market - design companies won't blink at those prices if they buy mac pros etc.fadein11

    • obviously apples to oranges in some ways (monitor etc)... but for what i need i can spend 2/3 of that and have a kick ass system to get job doneprophetone

    • I don't like the idea of that physical wheel. You can touch, use a stylus and that wheel? Seems like something should go and that wheel could be on screen.CyBrainX
    • guys this is actually quite a nice option– an intous Cintiq 27" (just a touch screen basically) is @ 2.5k eur, a maxed out MBP is 5k euro.ezkl

Apple basically scrapped the same idea six years ago.

    • @form Because doing combined touch/mouse gets really complicated.inv
    • I can easily imagine using left hand for touch and right hand for mouse (or puck).monospaced
    • Was this scrapped? They never release till they're "ready". Apple's secrecy is their undoing — meanwhile armchair critics fill the news with conjecture.evilpeacock
    • 6 years. I think it's safe to say they abandoned it. After this week, though, they'll have to re-evaluate their entire OS approach.formed

I think they should go all in on the all surface desktop concept. Drop all mouse interaction and basically do a huge iPad with great software. I think thats where the future of the "desktop" is.

But I think Apple is far more likely to do something like this than MS. They are..like you said..too busy playing catchup (especially on ecosystem etc)

    • Not to mention that Hololens thing, what a fucking waste of time.inv
    • you mean the stylus totally replaces the mouse? how would that or touch work in its upright position? it wouldn'tfadein11

both windows and apple look shit. I don't think either are good for serious work. You cant run Maya or houdini on this. I doubt you could do any serious photoshop /2d work on this. For that price you could a super computer and probably throw in a VR head set for fun.

    Hardware is meh.

Where's the fucking future? Both OS's & software look exactly the same as what has come before them. Am I only one feeling both companies are hindering progress purely to lock you down into their software/OS?

There are 2 large design shops in town that switched to PC's recently. Very surprising to find out. I'll wager if this thing is half as good as promised, it may push a couple more that are currently on the fence.

I don't think some of the younger people associate Apple to design like we do, since they haven't been marketing themselves that way in years.

    • Apple has lost it's cool. The herd moves on.monoboy
