Whereas reading this: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/a… makes me wonder whether we'd really want to rush into that.
Thee countries against are all being [rightfully] protectionist in their own quarters and if there's one thing that Brexit does allow, it's playing the same self-interested game as everyone else does - namely NOT having to open up national projects to international lowest bidders.
Why on Earth SHOULD our national High Speed Rail network be built by foreign companies?
Which is it? Support local industry, or sell out even more so? Remember - of all the European countries, the UK is one o fthe largest to outsource national spending.
- (in relation to last post on previous page)Nairn
- Remember the 80s? Remember when Britain was actually ahead of the curve globally - literally and figuratively - in terms of high speed rail?Nairn
- the true horror of our rail system is that huge chunks of it are owned by our European neighbours, who wait for it, subsidise their own highly effectivefadein11
- nationalised rail system by running ours. You couldn't really make it up if you tried.fadein11
- Yup, and our energy sector's run by EU companies which are, wait for it, illegally propped up by their respective states.Nairn
- And our airports are owned by a Spanish construction company propped up (illegally) by EU development fund to Spain, n turn (illegally) doled out to ferrovial.Nairn
- "You couldn't really make it up if you tried."Nairn
- Basically, the British taxpayer has subsidised the takeover of its privatised infrastructure by foreign conglomerations subsidised by their countries.Nairn
- The EUmperor has no clothes.
One day, perhaps, we'll recognise this i the UK too and treat the situation as cynically as our brethren across the channelNairn - ..except, sadly, from the outside.
without EU subsidy.Nairn - All the while we're sneered at by a Luxembourgian who's main claim is engineering Amazon's gutting of local business and taxation. Yaay!Nairn
- toot toot!
http://www.smithsdai…Nairn - sorry? I think you missed my point.fadein11
- I find it hilarious that our privatised rail network is run by nationalised Europen neighbours, pumping huge rewards into their systems.fadein11
- I didn't miss your point at all, I was further iterating its ridiculousness with other examples.Nairn
- well we brits do like to "play up and play the game", what what!hans_glib
- we mustn't stoop to the depths of johnny foreigner now, must we?hans_glib
- If only the concept of 'too big to fail' stretched further than banks in the UK's version of the 'Anglo-Saxon' capitalist model.Nairn
- Yep, it is utterly absurd.
Ha hans, not at all. It's the irony of our entire (mainly private) infrastructure being run by nationalised bodies abroad.fadein11 - It just highlights the nonsense of Brexit even more intensely, as in we made our bed now lie in it.fadein11
- ...Or, we can now renegotiate contracts without being legally obliged to include [subsidised/ nationalised] EU competitors.Nairn
- possibly and this is the big question, imagine we end up better off? It's going to take better leadership to achieve that if possible.fadein11
- As irritated as I am by Brexit, there is the opportunity to tear up the status quo and re-write our own future.
We won't, of course.Nairn - and there's the rubfadein11

Lord Sugar told the House of Lords yesterday that he could have single-handedly kept Britain in the European Union two years ago. “Alan, you muppet,” he chides himself every morning. “This is all your fault. Why did you have to be so bloody modest and self-effacing?”
History pivoted, this reticent software mogul explained, on his decision not to appear in a BBC television debate on the eve of the referendum. “I was invited by David Cameron to take the lead,” Lord Sugar told peers. “And to this day I kick myself for turning it down. I felt I wasn’t qualified.” Like the poor cat i’ th’ adage, he let “I dare not” wait upon “I would”.
Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, went in his place. “Sadiq did the best he possibly could,” Lord Sugar said, with as much condescension as he could muster. Then, realising that he could patronise the mayor just a little more, added: “Look, I’m being polite.”

It's f*cked.
66,694,399 = UK population.
17,410,742 = Leave votes."Will of people" = 26.1054% of the total population actually voted for Leave. The will of 66m people is not to leave, that is the will of a 1/4 of the population, mostly from up north and in poor, benefits riddled, uneducated working class areas.
Assuming now a leave vote looses votes due to change of mind and gains a few, let's reduce it by 10% = 15669668.
So in 2018 we can assume that 23.4947% of the UK population actually want to leave in 2018.
This is the "will of the people" that idiot TM is charging ahead with (let's for a moment disregard her husband standing to gain ££££££££ from shorting the UK and turning UK into a tax haven etc.).
- ok, so 66m includes babies and children and mentally ill etc.. but still... of those able to vote, it's not a 50%+ majority that want leave.shapesalad
- it's fucked, yes.
but you can't assume those that didn't vote wanted to stay.hans_glib - I hear you, but lets be honest - its a fucked vote ever way. Yes pro leave was corrupt but lets not kid ourselves about the corruption of the EU.mugwart
- guess what I'm trying to say that the only way out of this insanity we are witnessing it trying to improve our own lives and in thus communities.mugwart
- the really dumb thing is why may took this on at all. it should have been handed over to gove johnson, mogg and all the other brextards to sort outhans_glib
- so that when they crashed out of europe and made a total mess of things they only have themselves to blame.hans_glib
- I am paranoid so I do think this is all scoundrelous and planned out though, so feel free to slam my anarchistic point of view!mugwart
- 46.9 million people are eligible to vote in the UK. Turnout was 71.8% 17.4m voted to leave. 33.5m people voted in total........quick maths.......52%Morning_star
- instead when it all goes tits up they'll be able to say "it's not what we wanted, SHE fucked it up".hans_glib
- +1 hans

- We can collect these coins to throw at May, Boris, Mogg and Farage.shapesalad
- That's handy – the 50p coin will be a great reminder when sterling is worth half what it is now against all other global currencies!DaveO

I'm on a train heading out of London. It's a journey I've taken lots of times before. This particular train has brand new carriages. They've taken out the dining car, so you can't even buy an overpriced bottle of water. They've removed all the tables, so you have to balance your laptop on your knees, which are banging into the passenger opposite because the seats are so close together. They've included charging sockets but have screwed covers over thm to prevent you from using them. WTF?
The lights are so bright as to make you squint. Genuinely headache inducing. The heating is turned up to Max. None of the windows open. The seats are the opposite of ergonomic. There is literally nothing of any human convenience provided. It costs 42 quid.. It is over an hour late.
- Taiwan have had a high speed rail for years, it's on time, spacious, nice trolly cart and you can buy wooden boxed bentos. Tickets bought on the day are cheap.shapesalad
- Taiwan isn't even officially recognised a country by the majority of the world and they got excellent trains. The UK invented the f*cking train!shapesalad

last week's failure to secure a fast track entry to the WTO was fairly obvious but significant.
if there's a No-Deal brexit the UK will be the only truly independent country in the world.
what I mean by inde[edant is they will be the only country in the world without a trade deal with any other country.
- And if it's heading towards that I'll be flying to Lisbon in Feb 2019, and they try to kick me out I'm claiming asylum. fuck that shit.shapesalad
- Also take note that Russia supported the leave vote, then blocked UK's entry to the WTO after it leftThe_Reprisalizer

No Sleep Till Brexit: The City Scrambles to Deal With Quitting the EU
- lowimpakt0
- doubt it. If Brexit goes ahead, we just become tax haven for mega rich to launder their dirty money. Without customs officers, more drugs into uk = north dies..shapesalad
- < that chart is not a true picture. The high GDP region of the UK is the City of LDN - has a high GDP as it processes UK/EU financial transactions.shapesalad
- Once that moves to Germany for example, we'll look different on that chart. Exclude it and we'd look similar to Germany/usa.shapesalad
- GDP only counts products and services once in their life cycle. Buying and selling on the LSE for instance does not count.Morning_star
