Lord Sugar told the House of Lords yesterday that he could have single-handedly kept Britain in the European Union two years ago. “Alan, you muppet,” he chides himself every morning. “This is all your fault. Why did you have to be so bloody modest and self-effacing?”
History pivoted, this reticent software mogul explained, on his decision not to appear in a BBC television debate on the eve of the referendum. “I was invited by David Cameron to take the lead,” Lord Sugar told peers. “And to this day I kick myself for turning it down. I felt I wasn’t qualified.” Like the poor cat i’ th’ adage, he let “I dare not” wait upon “I would”.
Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, went in his place. “Sadiq did the best he possibly could,” Lord Sugar said, with as much condescension as he could muster. Then, realising that he could patronise the mayor just a little more, added: “Look, I’m being polite.”
