- what wrong with pluto? should be a planet.hotroddy
- Pluto is simply not a large enough round thing in the faces of astronomers for them to get sprung enough to call it a planet any more.ETM
- Found the cat.nbq
- still a planet. pluto forever.sea_sea
- or it's on a different orbit axis entirely, and smaller than other dwarf planets that orbit the sun and have never been considered planets ever?Cosmodrome
- the fact that it's not considered a true planet should actually make it more fascinating, but for some reason, seems to detract.Cosmodrome

Here is what I was getting at. And I LOVE space exploration. I own tons of movies about this stuff. My issue is with modern NASA. They havent done a whole hell of a lot thats been very meaningful since the Apollo missions.
Seems like they blew their load with that, then just kinda dropped off a cliff. They had the space shuttle, some mars rovers, hubble, but no real significant accomplishment. Why are we spending all of this money to visit a dead rock? Spend that money on space exploration that will mean something to the human race.
Why is it taking so fucking long for this company who is stuck in quicksand to figure out how to get a colony going on Mars? Oh... thats right.... theyre spending god knows how much money to go to PLUTO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Needs new leadership badly, that is ambitious. Ive had a big problem with NASA for a long time now and Im not alone, I discuss this shit with other space exploration fans on other boards. NASA is AWFUL now. They have been for a long time. We dont even have our own method of space transportation anymore. We use the Ruassian for that lmfaoooooo. Meanwhile theyre blowing up rockets left and right with Space-X. What a disgrace they are now.
- They're. Sending. A. Probe. To. The. End. Of. The. Solar. System.
And not like they did with the Voyagers.
I don't get what's not to get here.detritus - And they do these pointless missions... while the government slashes their budget. Stop visiting dead rocks then!CygnusZero4
- And your SpaceX ranting's ridiculous - you do realise that most, if not all, rockets sent into space by NASA were made by commercial concerns?detritus
- hey Cygnus, you think spending money on setting up habitation on Mars is better?monospaced
- Dead rocks? Cygnus you aware of any planets with life that wouldn't also take thousands of years to get to?ETM
- go take a look at what the mars rovers, the hubble and (you forgot to mention) the iss brought back to humanity.uan
- because the data this missions gathered is a big part of all humanity knows about space. it's not a movie!uan
- NASAs historical budget is around $500 billion. Either pretty efficient spending, or poorly funded for all the accomplishments they've achieved since 1958.IRNlun6
- And not to mention all the benefits to private industry.IRNlun6
- How do they get past the Van Allen Belts?robthelad
- Fuck!! At what point does it just become a massive success for humanity? Who cares 'who' gets us somewhere?Ianbolton
- I find this a pathetic rant when the whole global economy is fucked and we're still chucking fuck loads into space exploration. Science still wins.Ianbolton
- For Cygnus. I call what NASA been doing meaningful. See Cassini as well: https://www.youtube.…wagshaft
- For Lanbolton: http://minnesota.cbs…wagshaft
- Exactly wagshaft. Some people are mindless morons. May as well just become religious and forget science. ;-)Ianbolton

Before one more person bitches about b&w photos, actually educate yourself on the process. Anyone who's manipulated photos in PhotoShop should be able to grasp the concept:

I'll weigh in with some science and k-nowledge. For all you complainers about black and white photography-- there is no color in the visible spectrum in deep space!! The sun appears as just a particularly bright star in the great distance. We're talking about extremely, extremely low light.
The reason why the pictures appear to have any color at all is because the satellite takes three different pictures at different wavelengths, and then the 3 images are combined.
If you were looking at pluto with your naked eyes from the same distance it would appear gray.
- <nerdpinkfloyd
- <nasal voicepinkfloyd
- There certainly IS color in the visible spectrum in deep space, and your naked eye would have no problem perceiving it. The amount of light WOULD be an issue.monospaced
- And the reason ANY pictures have color is because of the 3 combined wavelengths, RGB. Same with the retina in your eyes.monospaced
- Of course there is color in space. But no, not like that painted in our favorite sci-fi shows.ETM
- it's clear i meant that there is not enough light for the human eye to perceive color in deep space. gimme a break heresarahfailin
- that wasn't 100% clear, based on your second sentence :)monospaced
- erm, no, that's not how it works, sarah.detritus
- Well, I suppose - if you did view pluto with your bare eyes from the distance of NH, you'd see about a quarter second of colour, then your eyeballs would freezedetritus
- Yea but potatoset

^^what ETM said... and it's not just Pluto that New Horizons has gathered data on the last ten years... look up all the info on Jupiter and the Jovian system we now have due to this craft.
*is very proud of this achievement... yay humanity! :)

im a scorpio and pluto is my planet..
if any of you FUCKS says otherwise..
..i'll be happy to introduce you to PLUTO's FINEST!!

- Huh. I wonder how ancient astrologers knew of Pluto?detritus

That's no small planet. It's a space station!
- PonyBoy3
"New Horizons passed Jupiter on Feb. 28, 2007, riding the planet’s gravity to boost its speed and shave three years off its trip to Pluto. It was the eighth spacecraft to visit Jupiter – but a combination of trajectory, timing and technology allowed it to explore details no probe had seen before, such as lightning near the planet’s poles, the life cycle of fresh ammonia clouds, boulder-size clumps speeding through the planet’s faint rings, the structure inside volcanic eruptions on its moon Io, and the path of charged particles traversing the previously unexplored length of the planet’s long magnetic tail."
- Wow! What a pointless waste of money visiting dead rocks </sarcasm>ETM

- so its a dead, cold rock. how much did this program cost again?CygnusZero4
- Why's it only you vs. the rest of the interworld who seems to have a problem with this? Sure, the graphics are better on your XBone. Perhaps stick to that?detritus
- if it's motion blur they might be able to render it away in postuan
- New Horizons isn't only about Pluto.monospaced
- Im talking about the mission in general. Its a deal rock. We've always known that. What is this money being spent on?CygnusZero4
- We spent how much money for some black and white pictures of pluto???CygnusZero4
- $700000000pablo28
- Go look at the mission site and see the full scope. I'm not going to argue with someone completely blind to the wonder and pride most of us feel in this.detritus
- This admittedly quite costly mission cost 3.5x the revenue earned by the Kim Kardashian app. *shrug*detritus
- FUCK YEAH, AMERICA!
*waves confed... stars and stripes*detritus - This mission is not only about Pluto. How do you not understand this? It's about the extent and activity at the edge of our solar system, and beyond.monospaced
- Also, we're going to have full color, high res images and a SHIT FUCKING TON of data about all the details of the region. Good stuff, not just images.monospaced
- Thing is, it'll take a couple years for all that data to make it here at the rate and distance it's traveling.monospaced
- Colour needs to be processed on earth. The photos are b&w and the colour is data to be compiled later. More efficient to send. over the 2400 baud space modem.ETM
