It's a computer you plug into a computer. I watched this video with the sound off and that's all I got from it. So the hordes of disadvantaged black kids can stand in line and plug their computer into the one computer the village has to have their own desktop..... Maybe I should have watched it with sound.
Yes—sound helps. It seems like a pretty neat concept.
The idea is great.
KEEPOD mother fuckin VO dude!
This is great. It means people can obtain affordable and personal storage, operating systems and data without having to maintain and secure a computer themselves.
This means one computer can be shared and used by many, its great.
Fully support this.
How is this different than saving your files 'to the cloud'?
Because you would need to be online to access the cloud.
Where as with this they have that option but can also save files for offline use, i.e PDF documents that explain sexual health and such. So on the times when internet connection is not possible they can still use the computers for education.
So they plug a USB stick in, and it brings up their wee computer that they can save stuff to.... Is this not almost entirely pointless? Like I say I watched it with the sound off but all I saw was a towns computer that people could use.... They still have to wait their turn to to use the computer... so whats the big deal? why don't they just use a normal USB stick and the computers have the programs on them? It's like plugging a toaster into a toaster to make toast.
For starters If the computer was to break all the users would loose data, and given that these computers are most probably going to be pretty old etc thats quite likely to happen now and then.
With these USB keys they can always have their entire operating system with them and boot up on any computer. You said why don't they use normal memory sticks, but with this operating system they could include educational programs, basic versions of browsers for those learning how to use a computer etc. You can essentially have a custom OS for every user based on what they want and need which would play a huge role in the education process of it all.
Not to mention the fact that these people shouldn't have to share an OS to learn about sensitive information. They deserve privacy, lets not forget that in some countries they frown on female education. Do you think the women would use it to learn if they felt the person after them could see what they were looking at, downloading etc if they forgot to clear the history one day? you forget what freedoms we have over some places.
I have a bootable USB w. Linux/Ubuntu/Kubuntu and do that on other people's machines all the time. This is nothing new.
Just another way for Israelis to market simple and cheap USB drives for more money to poor people. Keepod = Hedgehog in Hebrew.
I would assume the majority of the cost would be for the software and updating it, maintaining it etc etc rather than the cost of a USB Drive.
I wouldn't assume it was a corrupt plot by Israelis if they are raising awareness of sexual health etc?
Come to thin of it, the cost is what? $7.
So for $7 they are providing
- USB Key (even if mass purchased on wholesale)
- OS System (which would have been coded specifically)
- Other Software (inc the stuff that might not be free online)
- Delivery of device
- Tutorials on how to use device
- On going support for users
Personally, I don't see how they are ripping off poor people here? they would be making what kind of profit? maybe I'm wrong but I don't see it?
sem, there's nothing revolutionary with this product,
to be frank there are at least 3 years late to the ubuntu usb key which did the same thing, I know it's a novelty for some people but it's not for people that were serious about doing stealth computing,
gimmicks apart, you can get a hold 4gb key for $3 online, load umbuntu and not pretend you're going to bring the internet to millions of poor thirdworlder, how condescending these cunts have to be to believe that even the poorest hole doesn't have a internet coffee room
btw: they even got their number wrong, but it's ok, the point of the video is to get investor and never deliver
- sorry for the tone, but they didn't invent shit and pretend they're going to bring the world one step forward when even in the shittiest hole of my country you'll find a internet coffee shopGeorgesII
- the shittiest hole of my country you'll find a internet coffee shopGeorgesII
Of course you could boot *nix from USB including Ubuntu, but this was specifically designed with those kids in mind, I'd guess the software it comes with is tailored for education, etc.
Just to make my point of view clear. I've been living here in Israel for 22 years now. On and off. EVERYTHING but ALL of it here, no matter what, is based on the neocon, hard-core, capitalist philosophy. From health care to innovation. From Holocaust propaganda to public works. From politics to activism. I just happened to know the word, because I speak Hebrew, so I get it. If you think USA is tough, come try Israel and see what Jews are doing to their own. You'll be amused.
And then, we market some obvious "shit" to the rest of the world as a *good* thing... Sounds familiar?
if this happens there will be 5 billion more emails sent asking us to give them 5 thousand pounds for them to access 2 million my dead uncles brothers mother from south africa has left me...
i get emails like this constantly... and yes i am being funny.
