I made a sweet little site for myself that looks good in most grownup browsers, but IE8 fucks me up all over the place.
What the fuck can I do?

Is your target user going to be looking at it in IE8?

<!--[if lte IE 8]>
<style type='text/css'>
body {display:none;}
</style>
<![endif]-->

use conditionals on your html element:
then you can write style rules like:
html.lt-ie9 .some-class {
/* rules for IE8 and below */
}

I hate that. I had a site looking great, but the client was using Safari (because he didn't know to download any other) and it had alignment issues with Safari for some reason.
Unfortunately you have to cater to Safari and IE though because they are what "most people" use as they know no different.

1. Copy and paste this banner code into the body of your website:
<!--[if IE]><div style='clear: both; height: 112px; padding:0; position: relative;'><a href="http://www.theie8countdown.com/ie-users-info"><img src="http://www.theie8countdown.com/assets/badge_iecountdown.png" border="0" height="112" width="348" alt="" /></a></div><![endif]-->

What specifically is breaking? If you're using HTML5 elements you need to include some kind of shiv to make older versions of IE understand what the tags are. ( html5shiv, modernizr, etc...)

I had to think for seconds to understand what IE8 meant.
It reminds me I have work to do.

The following scripts have helped me deal with IE 7 / 8 without resorting to much conditional css. However, you have not specified what issues you are having...

I wonder how many overall hours of productivity the world has lost debugging IE.
