hi all, after some advice if possible (let the head see the lions mouth) - got to put a proposal together for a possible new client, which is basically a rebrand of a museum...
from what i can gather it is stage 1 - in other words the logo and all associated methods of presentation for each environment, you know, from biz cards to website and back again.
so... it is not just a logo as such... it is wrapping it up the shirt and tie of corporate guidelines, making it work regardless of where it is to be seen.
and my question being, how do you cost such a thing? the logo conception and the guidelines together? just the logo? work out overall estimated time and apply hourly rate?
any pointers on the going rate for this kind of gig? it is grant funded if that helps...
also, as part of the proposal - would you include other elements (maybe as a wish/shopping list) - like website/apps/digital etc...
been that long since i landed anything "the proper way" that my head is west on this one :-(
what do you folks do?

Time and materials.

You've been asked to develop what is called an entire identity and the accompanying system, so the least you could do is recognize that. This kind of project is usually on the massive side and involves lots of time and usually a team. Definitely don't do this hourly.
- According to the Handbook ( https://www.graphica… ) pricing would be based on their revenuemonospaced
- Ive always said this, if Nike wanted you to create something and took you 1 hour and they loved it, would you charge them 1 hour?ArmandoEstrada
- one hour?ArmandoEstrada
- I would never only charge 1 hr. Nike, no matter how small, would get a full day or more, minimum.monospaced

I dont know much about this client (size, collections, how theyre funded, etc.), but I have worked for museums in the past. There are often a lot of politics involved so be sure build in extra budget.
Maybe you could break it into phases and have an initial fact-gathering phase which you could then use to properly scope the project.

Are you sure you are upto such a large project if you are not aware of how to even cost it up? Don't mean to sound harsh but they will be expecting a certain format and level of presentation.
In your 1st paragraph you mention website then later on you say that would fall under a wish list item...- and a better written proposal than my comment here.fadein11
- that's what I was implying too... he doesn't even seem to understand what he's getting intomonospaced
- the website ref was more about the corporate/brand id appearing on a website - not the actual website ;-)

thanks for the replies... much appreciated...
don't worry i 'do' know what i am getting into - and that is why i thought i'd sound you guys out...past few years have been projects that come about via word of mouth - clients to potential clients and the like - and majority of the time it's a case of we've got this much to spend what do we get...
i guess my phrasing of the question does make me sound like a bit of "rabbit in the headlights" but that is not the case (he says with blind optimism) - it is a case though of not having had to pitch/tender what ever you want to call it to land a project.
and as for how much is it worth to me - well - i'd do it for free if i am perfectly honest - but for the amount of work involved i'd need a lottery win to happen first!!!
but thanks for all the responses ;-) some good and valid points for me to think about...
- and hope that doesn't sound like work comes flooding through my door :-( just got luckywwfc
- If you don't think the museum doesn't have a budget for this you're gonna have a bad timed_rek
- i've seen some figures of the most recent grant... it's a pretty decent wedge... guess it depends on how much is allocated for this side of things
wwfc - What are the chances you'll have competing pitch proposals?monospaced

Sounds like a lot of work just to figure out how much work is involved. Ask them to hire you on as a consultant to scope out the project and give them a report on what is involved, and what it would cost you to do the work. They can get a comparable from someone else to do their due diligence, and you'll be ahead of the game in already understanding the project well.

How to write a project proposal.

You should figure this out and take some time to do so, because you'll be doing it often (hopefully?)

do it for free then. see how that turns out.

Unrelated, but I always know someone is from UK/AUS/NZ when they talk about "costing". Makes me laugh a bit.

My tiny 2 person company won a contract recently to produce a huge TV spot for huge gov. agency. An agency we freelanced for asked for cost estimate based on the boards. I couldn't comprehend why such a huge agency would ask small fish like our company to produce (later i found out the agency x4 the costs so they didn't want to hire "legit" production company with huge overhead). We grossly over-budgeted but in the process we've learned that when you do a project for a large organization so much time-wasting bureaucracy is involved that we broke barely even.
So my advice would be to pad your time SIGNIFICANTLY as you will be spending crap load of stuff writing meaningless emails back and forth. Moreover make sure in your pitch to use lots and lots of images to illustrate your points - make it colorful and attractive showing the process and breaking the process down as if talking to a 7 year old. Remember, people evaluating your pitch are not smart - they are cogs in a huge system afraid to be brave so they want lots and lost of material (preferably flashy and colorful) to justify their choice in case shit hits the fan.

How big is the museum? Based on what you've told us It could be anything from a small historical museum in a house to a top tier Museum in a major city.

If it's a wax museum in a small town, maybe $3,000 at most.
If it's MoMA, you can charge $90,000.- I would say $100 (or free as he's happy to do that) - $1millionfadein11
