Latest 78 find is a dark one - a 2 x disc set Dear Doctor... however the Doctor in question is the Nazi Dr. Joseph Goebbels. Quite what audiences thought of these spoken word discs 84 years ago is a mystery.

I picked up a 100+ 7"s at the car boot yesterday including this monster! Imagine the goose bumps I had as walked away from the stall having spent £80 on singles. It wasn't until I got back to the car that I realised it was a repro, albeit a very good one and in great condition but still, 50p well spent I reckon.

A beautiful wee record box find at the weekend, I've never seen one like this before and when I found it, it was full of German singles.

  • Gardener0

I'm back from a fruitful dig in Northampton/Milton Keynes which turned up some amazing finds in only 3 days, these are some of the singles I'll get to the albums soon.

A Scottish football 7" I had not come across before - and I've seen a lot! Their glory days may be behind them now as Rangers are not doing so well at the moment.

Odd one off release by the holiday camp company on a label that only released 2 singles and it looks like it's signed on the label, maybe by Loopy himself!?

Another signed oddity featuring a cover of a song by The Nitty Gritty Dirt band first on the Paint Your Wagon soundtrack.

The toe-tapping B of the A side of a Phil Spector cover by Cleo (backed by The Stones). The ALO Orchestra are probably most famous for being sampled by The Verve for Bitter Sweet Symphony.

A scarce early 70's Nigerian disc of highlife-juju fusion music in beautiful condition.

Promotion disc of jingles and radio links, a very similar release to a whole LP of them I have released in the mid 70's via Anglian Productions.

Rare original mis-pressed Beatles EP with no track info on the A side!

Best 7" finds by some distance was a box of records near the till of a second hand warehouse a friend put me on to, I asked how much they were and the guy said "they are free, we've had so many donations of records we're just giving them away, so help yourself" unbelievable!?! There was dozens of 60's promo's and despite my gentle protest that "some of these must be quite rare" he insisted I take as many as I like, so I did, but slipped him £20 (which he tried to pass back to me) if only for karma reasons. I've not come across such generosity in a shop before but as I left I wondered wtf I must have missed if they had so many more. This is a handful of the best not including the Tamla ones!

featuring Benny & Bjorn pre ABBA

    featuring Steve Hackett pre Genesis

These are some of the albums that have made they way into my grubby hands in the last couple of weeks. I hit Northampton pretty hard the other week, I was only there a couple of days but still crammed in a boot, one auction and several charity shops. The best stuff turned up on my doorstep when I got home when a bloke answered my ad and rang saying he had a load of singles. I went round to his fancy static caravan and although the records were alright but nothing special and as I was saying my thanks but no thanks he asked if I liked The Beatles. Yeah sure, I said, so he pulls a record case out full of fab four and solo albums, "I want a fiver each for these, no offers" erm, OK so, I bought the lot, it's what he wanted. Nice original UK 1st mono pressings, although there was a White Album with only one disc but it had the bits, lovely copies of Ram, Walls & Bridges etc, and this...

A first press gold & black 1H/1H in quite incredible condition. I have only had 2 other copies in 40+ years of collecting, both came from car boots and both were scratched to hell and one never even had a sleeve, so this was gold indeed.

A pile of Lindisfarne and folk albums in an auction win also included this 2016 release which turned out to be nice surprise.

Also included was this short but delightful album which clocks in at less than 25 minutes. I saw Jarvis Cocker talking about it in the latest edition of Record Collector mag too.

Karma is most likely real, I dropped a box of albums off at a charity shop in Milton Keynes and flicked through their album selection in the racks and came across this wee beauty, case closed.

I've not heard Jarvis or anyone talking about this album I picked up in a charity shop in Morpeth on the drive home, I bought it for the sleeve art. Lady in the shop said the school is in the Newcastle area..

I paid a fiver for this one-sided interview disc, Ian explains the stories behind the songs.

I found a bunch of nice classical records on my travels too. Blagging access to the back of the shop I found 3 boxes they had all priced up at a fiver each (can't believe they actually looked any of them up tbh) and in with them were 2 copies of this box set but I chose this one which had an undamaged box. A fiver a record seemed to be the magic price on this trip, spooooky.

Ahh, but these albums were a pound each so I guess that blows that theory.

7" finds since last weekend, nothing all that rare just stuff that was cheap and caught my eye.

I was really pleased to find this, I was aware of it but had just never found my own copy, the vinyl is really thick too and in great condition.

    UK Rockabilly E.P.

The debut Nagging Woman E.P. by Gloucestershire's answer to The Wurzels, in a signed sleeve no less.

Scarce tribute E.P. to the late, great Irish virtuoso fiddle player.

Gimmick release which has the enclosed disc also imprinted onto it's sleeve, the only other copy of a record I have with this fancy trick was Psychedelic Furs 7" Dumb Waiters.

Great 4 track release of the Be Bop Deluxe sampler Hot Valves - I have a copy in a picture sleeve but this is a nice UK demo issue.

Early 70's musical GB the B side was sung by Penny Croft daughter of David Croft, co-creator of 'Dad's Army'.

Aussie E.P. of bird sounds, better than that sounds!

Sweet wee 78rpm greetings card disc, the chap Victor Gordon Michie named inside is most likely the same chap behind Aberdeen's largest pharmacy chain.

Weekend album finds from a huge stall at Scotlands largest car boot on Sunday, I was happy to pay a fiver each.

Sleeve art by Don Martin, the great artist for Mad magazine.

These budget albums are usually trash but this one from 1985 is probably the rarest of them all as it's #92, the last one they ever made and it has Linda Lusardi on the cover.

I have the OST with the movie design on the front but this is the complete original score.

As well as the great compilation I also love the great glossy sleeve on this UK issue.

US promo of my fave JB album.

Good timing finding this late 70's compilation on Beggars Banquet. I will be going to the 5th Groovy Record Fayre this coming Saturday and the artist for this sleeve Savage Pencil aka Edwin Pouncey is always in attendance, so hope to get it signed by the great man!

Some of the singles I picked up the other week at the once a year Groovy Record Fayre in North London hosted by Jonny Trunk. I managed to make a few quid despite the expenses of stall hire, parking, congestion charge, petrol, food etc. It was so busy, if you have never been I recommend it!

I picked this up at a car boot at the weekend and it came with it's original info sheet - I've already been in touch with the Hermitage Academy here in Scotland. It will be interesting to hear if they know any more about it and get back to me.

A spoken word acetate which I couldn't find anything out online, but there is an author called James Richardson so I suppose I'll have to try and track him down too.

Some kind person sent me a download of this over 10 years ago and so to find a hard copy in a Milton Keynes charity shop for a quid was a quite an emotional moment, ha!

    Groovy Record Fayre fynds

One sided promo for the shoe company.

Apparently huge in Europe and still going strong but I had never heard of them before finding this. It bombed in the same year that Space had a pretty similar disco smash hit with Magic Fly.

I was kinda hoping this was a dub Spider Man tune but it turned out to be called Please Stop Your Lying by Joy White & Ronnie Davis.

Just a few of the Indie 7"s a pair of ladies had on their stall for £2 each or 10 for £12, I spent £30 with them.

Other odds and ends I picked up cheap, including some great flexi-discs I hadn't seen before.

My last record store score. I've wanted this Meat Puppets record forever but the first pressing from 1994 was going for over $100. I forgot they repressed it and I got the last RSD Neon Jazzberry colored one in the store. I had to pick up the live Radiohead Hail to the Thief while I was there.

Some album finds in recent weeks.

The first release on Hong Kong based Four Seas Records, it's nice and all but would be hard to dance to as it sounds like restaurant background muzak.

Superb copy featuring some of the best tunes by Brian Fahey including the classic...

The debut album by Quincy, it was a shame about the damaged sleeve but the disc itself looks unplayed.

I have no idea why this has the sticker on it as it didn't even have the record inside!

A £2 find at the recent Groovy Record Fayre.

    Another cheap GRF find.

I found this in a box with some other West African records also on Decca.

I have hardly ever come across solo albums by the great Lindisfarne man and then I find 2 in as many months.

I had a stall at a big record fair in Dundee today and managed to clear out loads of stuff cheap, Beatles, Genesis, Dylan etc, albums I really wasn't fussed with keeping and as usual the dealers were all over me. The advantage of this to me, was that I got chatting and to one of them in particular who told me he had just bought a huge Velvet Underground and related collection. I know how much he paid for the lot and there were some interesting bootlegs and all but i thought I'd offer him trade on albums from my stock which he would easily be able to double up + on and he took the bait! So I have managed to get a few keepers for my growing VU collection, the originals hardly ever turn up at fairs or anywhere in the wild so I cherry picked a couple of goodies and a live album I don't have. I was really pleased as I have never owned original US issues of their albums, I have the UK ones but the debut with it's banana intact and in lovely 'fresh' condition was an Xmas treat to myself, £100 in trade for such a beauty was a no brainer to me and it's in even better nick than my UK mono, there was even a spare bit of banana from another copy. If I have only one small gripe I wish VU&N and WLWH had both been US mono rather than the stereo issues but hey, it certainly made my Sunday Morning.

The Eric Emerson 'torso' image projected upside down on the back cover was withdrawn of later pressings.

I had a great week digging down south recently and amongst all the 7" goodies I found was rarest Slade 7" flexi-disc. It was originally given to specially chosen guests as an invite to a party they held at The Penthouse Club in White Horse Street, Mayfair, London on December 19th. It is now long closed down, but it was here at the club owned by Bob Guccione, creator of Penthouse magazine that Slade held their 1973 Christmas party, just a week after their classic song Merry Xmas Everybody was released. It has specially recorded verses for the guests sung inbetween the familiar chorus, I assume 'Created by Jimmy' as mentioned on the label is band member Jim Lea, but there is so little info out there on this flexi and this is the first time it's been available to hear in over 50 years.

    • Dang, are you getting these at $1 bins or paying the value?canoe

    • it even had 20p written on the paper sleeve!Gardener

  • Gardener1

As I mentioned in an earlier post I am back from a busy trip digging down south. It was a mix of luck and general right place/right time really, I visited 2 record shops that were just not interested in selling singles so were knocking them out for 50p each, including the ones here and the flexi below, so how could I resist?! One guy told me a record shop had closed down and dumped their singles stock and he was happy for me to take away armfuls, though there were a lot without sleeves. As well as coming home with over 150 singles I had left a commission bid on 2 boxes of Techno/Acid mostly 12"s at an auction house before I left, which I luckily won for less than I had bid for, so collected them during my 9 hour drive north. There were some incredible Aphex/Orbital/Global Communications stuff that I have only just dipped into so far, but these are some of the 7"s that initially caught my eye.

1,000 copies of this were given away at the NME Xmas party in 1977 and later 500 copies for a competition through the mag, I had one at the time but have long since lost it. The two live tracks on the flip are by Ian Dury & The Kilburns, the final phase of Dury's pub-rock band Kilburn & The Highroads.

A top copy of the Northern Soul classic from 1967 re-issued in 1978.

A case where the DJ promo copy is worth only a fraction of the stock copy, which goes for £1,000+ This US mono/stereo promo is still a nice find though.

An Italian jukebox release from 1968 with the unusual pairing of Hendrix with Bee Gees. There are 2 versions of this, the one with the correct Hendrix track according to it's label and a mis-press that plays If 6 Was 9 and this does indeed play that wrong track!

As well as a large pile of similar odd foreign pressings I have yet to go through but will post soon, there were a handful of 60's Public Information 7"s that I was pleased to find.

    • What's your process? Do you check discogs / phone while digging? I mean it would be hella impressive if you knew these and found them!canoe
    • Besides the obvious. Post those 150 techno/acid 12scanoe
    • haha, yeah I will post some soon, I have no process other than collecting records since I was 14, I'm 63 lolGardener

A few more of the 7"s I picked up cheap in a record shop down south a few weeks ago.

I seem to remember once having a copy of this 1966 single before but god knows where it is (if only I had ESP...) but always nice to find another.

The second US 7" by one of my favourite bands, released in the autumn of 1968 but in the UK it came out the following year.

I'm not old enough to remember the 60's original but am old enough to remember his slightly disappointing (to me) comeback.

    A cheeky cut-up classic!

Another beautiful harp record for my growing collection of harp recordings, it's a thing, probably.

The second of the three single releases by the Fawlty Towers waiter, only marginally better than his cover of Shaddup You Face which according to his Wiki page he was urged to release by Sir Elton, gracias!

US promo of his debut release in a UK sleeve, label states it was released in '74 but that '75 stamp says otherwise.

Another one I am pretty sure I have somewhere and in a picture sleeve too! But when I do find it I'll swap the disc for this one as it looks unplayed and my other one is bound to be battered, vinyl war is hell.

  • Gardener2

I picked up this 10" 78rpm disc from the 1920's today by Lucie Bernardo & Otto Rathke.

Of British-English origin, the phrase that, or the, Kruschen feeling denotes great vitality, enthusiasm and liveliness. This phrase was originally used in the advertisements for Kruschen Salts.

    • That Krushen poster is absolutely diabolical, great share.garbage

A set of 4 early 60's Pfizer UK flexi discs which are made to look like actual 45's. The drug Niamid for treating depression was banned decades ago.

I have finally managed to find an upgrade on the sleeve (and the disc) of Rock 'n' Roll which has taken me YEARS. The disc is -EX which is an improvement on VG and came with the really badly torn sleeve, am still going to keep them both however as the NEXT copy I find will be even better, though I'll probably be in my late 70's...

    • Elvis ripped off The Clash design???fooler
    • I just saw this in my uncles garage along with The Stooges first LP and Velvet Underground.lemmy_k
