AF illuminator, do you turn it off or on and why?
(Auto focus light before taking a shot, y'know)
I can turn it off on my Fuji X-T1, i've read a blog where a pro says to turn this off.
- quote: ''AF ILLUMINATOR: Personally, and probably more out of habit, I always have this option set to off. I don’t like lights spooking my subjects.''Bennn
- the dude is doing street photogBennn
- You mean the little light that points at the subject? ya turn it off. unless it's really too dark to focus.pango
- yeah, that light. Thats what i think tooBennn
- Only turn it on if it's super dark & you need AF. You probably will never need it. Or, use it to attract attention on the street so people look at the camera!nb

Do you use filters?
UV, clear, polarizer
I've read those can produce unwanted stuff on pictures. I take lots of pictures outdoor, in the sun. I always have polarizer filters on all my lenses. What do you think?
- UV for cratch protection. ND for Long exposure in day time. CP for Sky, Water, Reflection. none for studio photo.pango
- A low-end filter will reduce the image quality of a high-end lens.nb
- I don't bother with UV filters, I'm just careful not to scratch the lenses. If you're in windy places where sand is blowing around, then get a UV filter.nb
- In my experience, it's actually very difficult to scratch a lens to the point where it will affect anything other than the resale value. ;)nb
- Circ-Pol is an ok 'effect' if you're using it correctly. Strongest result is when the lens is pointed 90º from the sun. Rotate the front filter element.nb
- *resale value. exactly. a lot of pumb and grind where i go.pango
- i bought my filters on eBay, cheap ones. 'Good' one cost a lot! Dont want to put 250$ on a godam filter :(Bennn
- B+W, Rodenstock are tops! Hoya Pro filters are not as good, but good value. If you use amateur lenses, you can use cheap filters. Otherwise, don't bother.nb
- This is why I don't use UV. Why put a $200 filter on a $500 lens? Just take a chance, if you scratch the lens, who cares. Just my opinion, man.nb
- thanks a lot for the comments, reallyBennn
- Circular Polarizers to cut on glare, also affect (darken) the skies on Landscape photos. Usually off.inhaler97
- usually off? what do you mean?Bennn
- He means that most of the time you shouldn't have it on your lens.nb

speaking of Filters, Seems like theres a new trend in using Welding mask filters as extreme ND filters.
Heres a good read.
http://www.alexwisephotography.n…- That's cool! You could probably glue the glass to a cheap UV filter's edged and avoid that rubber banded setup he's got.mg33

This reminds me, I'm hoping to write a blog post about zone focus for the X70 in the next week, because most of the X70 guides a X reviews I've found don't fully explain it, especially when you consider that in autofocus mode there's a mode called "zone" that isn't at all real zone focusing.

Does the fuji xt1, xe1 and xt10 all use the same sensors?
- pango0
- They all have the same sensor and image quality except the xe1. Thanks!pinkfloyd
- Same size sensor doesn't necessarily mean same sensor, though, does it?nb
- that's why i included sensor type and processor for comparison. Image quality should all be the same if the lens is identical as well.pango
- judging from the chart. they all should be fairly similar.pango
- the x-e2 looks to be the most portablepinkfloyd
- the xe2 is 1mm thinner than the xe1. same weight though.pango
- x-pro 2 is new sensor, thoughhallelujah

Has anyone any experience with the FPP developing kit?
Finally moved in to a place I don't have to care about water bill!
Loving the idea of using 35mm film stocks for stills.http://filmphotographyproject.co…

bit to much money!mugwart - I've used a similar kit, but not this one. It's surprisingly easy, if you're careful about temperatures. If you're good at black and white, you can do color.nb
- Don't you guys have one he labs?pango
- *one hrpango
- Don't you guys know it's the future alreadymoldero
- These days, labs usually take at least 2-3 hours. And they're never open late.nb
- also the look and feel of digital never has cut it to me. I hate/refuse to apply film LUTs grain in post just to get it to look how it did 30 odd years ago.mugwart
- Cameras were built to last and you could create your own look and style with your camera/lens. With digital it feels every ones look the samemugwart
- Also when learning curves hit 0 you get the smug c*nts entering the game. I feel photography has suffered because some hipster can look at a view finder not ..mugwart
- ... a light meter.
Rant is at an end!mugwart

@mugwart
I have used a similar C41 kit. A few things to consider, if you're going to do it:
1. Temperature and timing need to be pretty accurate. I used an old Jobo machine that has a thermostat and heater built in. It's not necessary at all, but it made it a lot easier to process consecutive rolls.
2. The chemicals can be harsh. Wear rubber gloves and use some kind of ventilation. And don't just dump them down the sink when you're done!
3. Developing C41 color is different than B&W developing, in that there really isn't much you can do with C41. For example, with B&W you can push and pull film or adjust contrast, etc, But with C41 it's either you do it right or you fuck it up. It's really quite easy to do correctly, but there is always a chance you'll ruin a roll.
Because of that, I've found that it's just easier to use a lab. Saves time, doesn't cost that much more, and good labs tend to do a perfect job every time. The one benefit to doing it yourself is you can go out for a day and shoot and then process it immediately instead of waiting, which is really nice.

- are there another scanner recommendations?pango
- Epson 750 but you need customize it a lotmugwart
- < I also shot medium format this is a tad limiting!mugwart
- Am also looking for film scanner compatible with 35mm and medium format. And not flatbed.pango
- not sure your budget but if not a flatbed there is the hasselblad flextight. Can get older models on ebay. Way out my legal currently..mugwart
- Or the Nikon SuperCoolscan 8000 or 9000?nb

I read the X-E2 does some kind of smart blur when taking photos of people. Can that be turned off, and how?
- You can't
http://www.dpreview.…ok_not_ok - boo, thankspinkfloyd
- uh, that forum post isn't talking about smart blur, it's talking about slow shutter warning.nb
- You can't

Is the x100s or x100t any good for making web quality videos?
- Your phone is good enough for making web quality videosformed
- orlypinkfloyd
- Seriously, get a stabilizer (steadicam makes great ones, or even a gyroscope if you want easier/but more expensive)formed
- the real point, though, is that pretty much any camera will take good video these days. The difference is in the customizing, lens, etc.formed
- good to know, thankspinkfloyd
- For example, DJI's Osmo is just amazing. But you can't adjust the lens, to do that costs a few grand moreformed

New Sky Arts Photography programme.
First episode was last week and if you can get passed the pretentious judges and lingering bokeh shots of antique light bulbs it's pretty interesting and informative. There's some good opinions and insight from established photographers and during the assignments they deal with a host of common issues that arise when making an image. Worth a look.

For portraits and street photography, which would you guys go with? This is what's on craigslist now.
x100s - $400
x-e2 with 18-55mm lense - $550
x100t - $800- x100t, working your way to the x-t1imbecile
- the x100t has a rangefinder that you will find aids the street photography. get an 85mm+ lens for portraitsimbecile
- you can change lenses on the x100t?pinkfloyd
- x-t1 is the best out of the lot?pinkfloyd
- x100t; you're right, no lens change, my bad. it's 35mm would still make an excellent walking camera. the x-e2 would work for you.imbecile
- the x-t1 makes me wish I didn't have my 5D. Weight / sharpness are just "wow" to meimbecile
- Just get an xt1 and be done with it :-)formed
- 5d is full frame. Xt1 is 1.5(or 1.6) croppango
- we've talked about this pango... product / food. :D 5D overkill, as would be the 5D w/ battery grip and 85mm on the streetimbecile
- i had to punt your ass on facebook pango, you were getting too hyper on my postspinkfloyd
- What the cat post? Lolpango
- Fucking love cats!pango
- Yeah, cat post :)pinkfloyd

OK hoping someone can help here.
If my camera produces max image dimensions of 6016px X 4016px (69.1M) why does my local print shop ask for dimensions so much bigger than that for anything bigger than 12" x 18" prints???
I remember asking the owner of the shop before and she mentioned something like it was more a recommended size. That you would want to be as close as possible with portraits for example, but maybe not so close on landscapes.
Does this make sense? Also what does saving it at different resolutions like 240ppi vs. 300ppi do to the image dimensions?
thanks.
- called the shop again. looks like if istart with a full res 6016px X 4016px image i should be able to go three times that no prob.HijoDMaite
- but if i start with and 1800px x 1200px then i can't go much higher because the pixels are bigger and it would look shit.HijoDMaite
- That lab is using math instead of common sense. People have been printing 24x36 prints since the days of 6 MP and it looks fine.nb
- "Portrait vs landscape" argument is nonsense. When you're at 35+ MP what matters more is image quality, lighting, lens sharpness, focus, etc.nb
- If you have a good, sharp image, then 69 MP will look amazing.nb

Anyone get the XT2? Is it worth getting over the XT1?
