I would love it if we could keep the religion v science debate in the religion thread, and leave this thread for science news and debate. if we need to have a metaphysics of the day thread, we will make one.
Think you understand what 'infinity' means? Consider this animated video...- This thread topic is about how science is not and never can be a belief system. Period.monospaced

Red meat triggers toxic immune reaction which causes cancer, scientists find
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/healt…
Scientists at the University of California discovered that the human body views red meat as a foreign invader and launches an immune response
- Grass fed or factory meat?yurimon
- If this study is correct, it doesn't matter. It's about a type of sugar naturally occuring in the meat.ukit2
- The bible says otherwise. Just have faith.monospaced
- < listen to mono he is a belief junkyyurimon
- I would do a study on westons findings with organ meats if same effectsyurimon
- then do it, bitch, and then tell me you don't think science isn't a belief systemmonospaced
- There are actually a lot of studies linking red meat to higher rates of cancer. Only question is whyukit2
- Doesn't mean red meat doesn't also have nutritional benefits but there is pretty clear risk thereukit2
- im also wondering what the difference would be prior to cancer low rates prior to industrial societyyurimon
- according to that food matters doc, the body sees anything cooked as a carcinogenmoldero

That's pretty much how I see the "new age" movement, it's an attempt to recreate what people got out of religion (i.e., sense of objective meaning and purpose in life) through the language of science.
The idea that there is no meaning outside of that invented by humans scares the shit out of people, so they try to recreate it, through appeal to new age spirituality, nature, cosmic consciousness, etc.

A gigantic but fleeting burst of radio waves has been caught in the act for the first time, helping to narrow down the vast array of things that might cause them. Figuring out what these fast radio bursts – sometimes called blitzars – are or where they come from could help answer some of the biggest cosmological questions.
Blitzars last about a millisecond but give off as much energy as the sun does in a million years, all seemingly in a tight band of radio-frequency waves.
Their source is a mystery, but whatever causes them must be huge, cataclysmic and up to 5.5 billion light years away, says Emily Petroff of Swinburne University in Melbourne, Australia.
