Stuff i found in the trash lately. All works perfectly:
Old Acer laptop. Connected to my plasma, its now my permanent media center for Netflix, donloaded movies and Youtube. Works perfectly for this, with the addition of a wireless keboard + mouse
Marantz vintage amp
Philips Senseo coffee machine, white
Philips Senseo coffee machine, blue
(the above make great coffee if you get this Coffeeduck insert and grind your own coffee)
Decent-sounding Lenovo earbuds, brand new, still in package:
Two Playstation 2, with all accessories:
OBH Nordica electric kettle

Bin Raider!
UUGGGHHHHHHH

@set Here (Denmark) electronic waste is in a separate bin, not with kitchen waste. So all dry, no gross garbage water. Just free stuff.
And this is exactly the attitude i hate. Why is this gross? Obviously, i clean it all before use (especially kitchenware). We waste so many ressources, because we are being told to buy new shit all the time.

you're doing it right jagara,
here they just trow away expensive clothing, but I'm too big to take them

I find it surprising that you found working stuff like this in the bins; my experience when I was living in DK was that, in general, Danes are much more conscious of not being wasteful and keep perfectly good stuff until it no longer works than in other societies.
On the one hand, congrats on your finds! On the other hand, though, it's disappointing that the throw-away consumer mindset seems alive and well, even in DK.
- That said, I'd happily relieve you of one of your PlayStations!Continuity
- But i NEED them BOTH!jagara

"We waste so many resources, ..."
... and then you recycle useless luxury goods that are gonna waste even more resources for your pleasure only ;-)
- jagara0
@continuity in my experience, the Danes (i'm one) are extreme wasteful. People throw away stuff because it's dirty. A friend of mine actually threw away an electric kettle because he was to lazy to descale it. The coffee machines, for instance, needed descaling, but that was it. Perfectly fine electronics, furniture, kitchenware, it all gets thrown out because of lazyness. We're a relatively wealthy country...
@uan uh, i "recycle useless luxury goods that are gonna waste even more resources for your pleasure only"? What other resources am i wasting? Power? And "luxury goods"? You don't own any of these items? If you do, wouldn't you rather get them for free, and not contribute to the manufacture of more waste?
Sorry, a strong pet peeve of mine ;)

@jagara not really saying it's a bad thing what you are doing. just trying to point out what you yourself wrote in the title: "Stupid wasteful consumer society...". Not stupid because we trash functioning stuff, stupid because we buy that stuff in the first place and therefore encourage the market to produce them.
...and yes I'm guilty too, I own all of those things (just 1 ps2 and 1 coffee machine though).
- True. It's not like i have the perfect alternative. It's just sad and depressing to see the waste we generate...jagara

It makes you wonder if decades from now people will be more conscious of this due to resources running out...or if technology will enable us to manufacture products so easily that we throw away things even greater numbers.
- i.e. 3D printing etcukit2
- 3D printing I think is more practical for prototyping/mold-mak... It is worthless for mass production.monospaced
- Right now, but in 50 years...?ukit2

there was a study done a few years ago that audited the electronic waste dumped in the UK.
It showed that the value of the stuff thrown away that was still functioning or very easily repaired was about £220 million pounds.
stupid stupid waste of money and disaster for the environment.

DE has it figured out! Here in the US I see waste like you wouldn't believe (I ran a recycle route in the 90's) the sheer volume of waste staggers the mind. I've come across Items like a period Fender Vibrolux Reverb (value around $1k) in perfect condition, even a bronze statue I recently let go of for $115; but the topper was a bench-top autoclave that sold for just under $1300. If it's touching refuse I won't bother with it, only if it's standing alone. America is the king of waste and the niche is there to exploit.
- I'd bet most of it gets repurposed instead of in a landfill though. Put something on the corner in the US, it's gone within hours.monospaced
- it's gone within hours.monospaced
- Before the crash not as much, but now yes. Reprogramming the mindsets of people to re-purpose.ZOOP
- Depends on where you live, I guess. In San Francisco, before the crash, it was still minutes until gone.monospaced
- Leave something out in SF, it's gone within seconds. you have to be careful.monospaced
- Where I live trash is up by the house in many cases, long driveways. That stuff doesn't get seen or used.ZOOP
- SF is the epicenter for re-purposing, it's awesome! I'd like to get back there soon, it's been too long. :DZOOP
- <oops DE*ZOOP
- omg DK** why brain... whyZOOP
- Haha, thought you meant Deutchland. They are actually far more advanced in recycling terms, than Denmark...jagara
- My friend used to live In Germany, he said they fine you for using the wrong bin. Serious recyclers!ZOOP
- I would gladly support a law that was way more restrictive when it comes to recycling!jagara
