Couple of things:
1. Topic Lists vs. Topic Categories
I also like the simplicity of the current topic list. However... the one thing I've always wanted here is some filtering or identification system for separating design posts from everything else. I actually have an idea for this. It would be nice to have an icon system to represent a set of topics: Graphic Design, Web Design, Photography, Current Events / Politics, Help Needed (catch-all for design help, tips, etc.) Random/Nonsense, Music, and possibly others. You'd see all topics in ascending order by recency as it currently is arranged, but you'd have a filter to chose a specific topic to only view posts in that topic.
Where this gets weird is things like What are you listening to, animated gif thread, pic of the day, COTD, etc. where it's basically one giant thread that's continuously added to, which is a format that suits those topics. It would be weird if you had to view gif threads individually.
So maybe it could be a mix of topic categories with multiple posts, and some topic categories that consist of just one thread that's constantly grows.
2. New Members - I think it would be great to keep it tight, but still allow for people to join up. Invites would work, but I've always liked the concept of the masses approving/disapproving members based on a short bio, list of interests, etc. submitted in a form and then voted on by all existing members. Is that too exclusive? Would it help keep the right kind of people here? At the very least, it prevents it becoming a spam-haven because you're only able to post if you get approved.
- people can make one category per week. categories stay alive as long as they meet progress requirements, otherwise, they disappearcannonball1978

About your point 1:
I think it's better to leave it organized as it currently is, meaning no organization (#freebleeding). The most recent posts at the top.
Leave it to each user to be able to add the threads they want to collections they create.- Maybe a set of predefined tags you can select when making a thread with a function to filter if so desiredset

Set - Fuckit seeing as you dredged it up - I'd wanted to move on, but you're so utterly, utterly oblivious to your actions, here we go:
'Someone' on NTC, (a once beloved QBN member) was going through a bad time. 'Said someone' had, for a while, mooted the idea of doing a responsive version of the site. 'Said someone' needed a bit of a hand in life, but wouldn't accept any charity.
Some other NTCer thought of the bright idea of donating a wee bit of cash ostensibly 'for the responsive site' but actually just so they could help pay said someone's rent.
Quite a few other NTCers did the same, meaning 'said someone' could pay their rent. Everyone knew it was for this, yourself included.
Only one person, many months later asked 'said someone' for their money back. 'Said someone's life then took a further spiral and .. well, I won't go into that, but at that point you were ejected from NTC - mostly because of your often-poisonous behaviour, particularly asking for your 'donated money' back from 'said someone'.
.
You're either blinkered to impact of your behaviour or just a really fundamentally broken piece of work, set.
Donating money to people when they're down on their luck shouldn't come with strings.. and then really shouldn't come with the requirement of a refund, set - quite how you don't see that, I don't know.
You'll be non-plussed to know that 'said someone' is, finally, doing better in life - on their feet, no thanks to you.
And we still don't have a responsive NTC site - that wasn't then, nor ever in future, the point.
You fucking dolt.
- I didn't want to dredge this here a) for your reputation and, more importantly b) 'Said someone's privacy.detritus

you should vote for mods and features, and weight votes depending on membership tenure.
so 5 years or more doubles vote and 10 triples, or something similar
for better or worse there are a lot of contrasting personalities here and that could make it difficult to create a plan for mass exodus unless everyone is on board with the 'leaders'
one thing the owners of this site always got right (intentionally or not) is staying far removed from nearly all social aspects of the site. they modded, dropped in every once in a while and that's it. no opportunity for impartial favoritism. the moderation was unilateral and seemingly unbiased.

I really like this better than official QBN. Let's just built it as a site and move everyone there? :p

Set you left on your own. No one banned you.
- True, but the door was closed after we found out what he'd done to 'said someone'.detritus
- One thing is pointless internet biting and scratching, another thing entirely is doing dickish things to people IRL, offline.detritus

And, by the way set - there are only about 4 NTCers who keep a foot in both sites these days. The 'bitching about QBN' you often go on about is barely existant now and, when it does crop up, is simply an extension of the dialogue that goes on here — more of a "Can you believe what this guy just said?!".
NTC is, after all, simply a place where a load of old school QBNers went to, for various individual reasons, to banter and share work, etc, away from Google's never-forgetting Sauron-like glare, not to be 'secretive' and elitest or 'self-righteous' as you like to frame it.
Anyway, you forget:

- haha, actually, counting up, there's probably a good dozen with feet in both camps :)detritus

Anyway, back on track — I just wanted to respond to Set's grossly inaccurate interpretation of events ^up there.
.
What's needed for a responsive site here is a couple of decent back end coders and DB-whizzes, and a decent hosting plan, over a load of front-end developers and designers.

the notes are great, but they need a more functional way to be read. I like that they don't interfere with the conversation like most comments on other sites do, but I think it would be great if they could expand into a right side column and display all the notes at once, and then close that column when not needed anymore.

So you actually thought I'd willingly give money to help someone out, then decide I wanted it back, then mention on here that I was never refunded for a project I paid for?
What kind of fucked up bi-polar weirdo do you think I am?
I guess I'm beginning to understand your attitude towards me...
- My last note on this - why are you the ONLY person who didn't get the rationale for the funding, set? How come?detritus
- Perhaps all this time I've mistaken malice for stupidity but I've always held you in higher regard than an idiot.detritus
- We spoke in depth about the project for fuck sake. I guess I'm a dopey stoner but seriously why would I feign ignorance...set
