Flying into Colombo mid April, flying out of Delhi 2 months later.
So who here has been? Any stories, tips, great places to go and stay?
Hit me! : )

Yeah was thinking to keep it reasonably open - where was your favourite place you visited?

of the bigger cities - i liked bangalore, just for the walking around.
but we were backpacking; jump on a train, jump off in a village, stay a few days, step, repeat all the way to Mumbai (which, we arrived to in a flood). i dont know/remember the names of the little towns (it's been 12 yrs), but there's always a place to stay and food to eat and people are always keen on talking and asking you if you have some tin.
i dont think i'd travel that way with a wife though.

I went to Sri Lanka when I was a kid and earnestly want to go back to Kandy, in the heart of the country. It was beautiful and green and remote and snakes swam in the swimming pool.
I was 6 though, so I have no idea whether it's actually worth going to.

I have heard Kandy is AMAZING - that's definitely on the list!
Anyone here been to Colombo?

Pondicherry! yes, I've been there... it's a former french colony, not british, so the architecture's different.... and it's featured in the movie Live of Pi.... I have to admit I'm biased, as my Indian-American wife's family is from Pondicherry, it's an amazing place.... I was there many years ago, before I even knew her ....
Also, Ooty.... but there are a million places to go with no name that are interesting and often accidently but brilliant diversions, and trying to get somewhere specific on a time constraint may drive you crazy at times, be ready to change plans due to random things happening and learn to go with the flow rather than get frustrated...
Sri Lanka has not been quiet for decades...
http://www.theage.com.au/comment…My wife's family is Tamil and she has friends with family in Sri Lanka who can attest to that... parts of Sri Lanka will be probably "ok" for western tourists.... but I don't want to turn this into an online Tamil vs Sinhalese war..... It's a beautiful place from what I hear...

I've heard that Sri Lanka is ok now - we'll be in the South anyways which sounds pretty relaxed...
Anything I can't miss in Pondicherry? - That place sounds cool!

If you are into Nature Sri Lanka is gorgeous.
March to may is the best time – after the rainy season everything will be lush and green.

Sigiriya (Lion Rock) in the Central District which is an ancient ruined fort and was in an ancient capital with magnificent gardens, and beautiful rock art.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sig…You could spend a week on Taprobane Island near Galle for only about $7000 :)
