    Pondicherry! yes, I've been there... it's a former french colony, not british, so the architecture's different.... and it's featured in the movie Live of Pi.... I have to admit I'm biased, as my Indian-American wife's family is from Pondicherry, it's an amazing place.... I was there many years ago, before I even knew her ....

    Also, Ooty.... but there are a million places to go with no name that are interesting and often accidently but brilliant diversions, and trying to get somewhere specific on a time constraint may drive you crazy at times, be ready to change plans due to random things happening and learn to go with the flow rather than get frustrated...

    Sri Lanka has not been quiet for decades...

    My wife's family is Tamil and she has friends with family in Sri Lanka who can attest to that... parts of Sri Lanka will be probably "ok" for western tourists.... but I don't want to turn this into an online Tamil vs Sinhalese war..... It's a beautiful place from what I hear...
