I quite like it. Yes the wii had something similar but only on certain games and not to the extent he means.
The console could be named after an imaginary world. When you buy it you create a character within that world. The world then contains many games that perhaps all follow an overral narrative - e.g. save the world.
Its a winner. All played online with millions of other citziens of the world.
I'm getting quite wet.

it would be boring

Just because it's the same character, doesn't mean the rules have to be the same across all games. The character brings relative abilities with him across all titles.
So, yes, it's all technically one game, but with many different titles.

Ok, my character will be a morphing character, that will allow me to transform into any other character that I want to be.

It would require every game to have the same mechanics – your character jumps the same distance/height in every game, which means level design has to be standardized across every game, and no game can have special abilities (say triple jump) by default because that skill might ruin the experience of a level in another game.
And what's the incentive for studios/developers to make games within the narrow limits of this console?

I always wished there had been a hack that only I knew about in Call of Duty that would let me be completely naked in online multiplayer.

If your character is lost somehow Americans will kill themselves.

the sims, case closed

but, to add, I think game companies already do this to an extent. Being able to port over gained ability would be a bonus though - but ultimately may ruin the story (it makes a lot of sense why - in a game like Assassin's Creed 3 you have to start off knowing nothing - it would make the ability to have animated sequences, that progress the story, unavailable because you've added too many variables into the mix.)

I feel like playing as a character like Mario in a game like Assassin's Creed 3 wouldn't feel accurate. A lot of what I love about individual titles is their ability to transport. they do this by having a considered and consistent integrity to the design and function.
I do like the idea, however, of using the same character in a series of different games that are of the same genre.

if you have that many developers on board i dont see why the exact same thing wouldnt work as a single game... basically its a console that only plays one game, the game just happens to be broken into smaller individual games.

i could see a series of games based on the idea, but a whole console... i guarantee it wouldnt fly.

too gimmicky. The console's are big because people buy them for the big games that come out like mario, call of duty, zelda, final fantasy. Something that has the same guy in every game would be akin to a toy, unless the gameplay was so amazing you could look past the fact that it was the same boring character (me) in ever game.
It can be argued that video games are a chance to fantasize and be something else. Experience a different world through someone else's eyes. A big part of that mystique is lost when its you in the game.

So, basically, you're thinking of a GURPS-like character system for video games.
In order for this to be truly meaningful, each game would have to be based in the same universe, and follow exactly the same mechanics and gameplay rules.
