A game system where players only have one character that is used in all the games designed for the system.
Let her rip. Tell me everything that is bad with this idea.

what do you gain from it?

The Wii kind of started that, and PS home is kind of doing that within its platform. How would different game styles handle the look of your character.

doesn't wii do this already?

Its been done already

The premise is to force every player to have a character that they play with in every game.
This would allow players to bring achievements and abilities from one game to another.
That's all I have. Look/feel across games is an afterthought.
- but you're limited only to games that are structured to allow thisprophetone
- bringing an ability from one game to the other will unbalance the second gamescarabin
- But what if each game is based on a system balance.cannonball1978

The game is called sex, and the player is your junk. Did you mean video games? Ohhh....

Also, in this version, you don't have the option to not use your character in games. So if you can't do something in one game, you have to go learn to do it in another game.
- What if you can't do something but only own that one game?duckseason

so not only is the library limited, but now all the games are similar?

i vaguely remember that was the original idea behind XBOX Live. you create your avatar, use that avatar within the xbox game library, collect achievement point and can use those points in other games.
what went wrong? the monetization of virtual currency, why give for free when you can charge. MS Points is big business for the Xbox Live property also i think independent developers didn't want to pay to use the xbox live avatar. When Microsoft already charges them an arm and leg for every network action, (ie, to be listed on the marketplace, every update to their game, achievement tracking, etc.)

So, basically, you're thinking of a GURPS-like character system for video games.
In order for this to be truly meaningful, each game would have to be based in the same universe, and follow exactly the same mechanics and gameplay rules.

too gimmicky. The console's are big because people buy them for the big games that come out like mario, call of duty, zelda, final fantasy. Something that has the same guy in every game would be akin to a toy, unless the gameplay was so amazing you could look past the fact that it was the same boring character (me) in ever game.
It can be argued that video games are a chance to fantasize and be something else. Experience a different world through someone else's eyes. A big part of that mystique is lost when its you in the game.

i could see a series of games based on the idea, but a whole console... i guarantee it wouldnt fly.
