@cbass, it's a game where you build a city by laying roads, zoning areas for residents, shops and industry, and you play mayor as you set taxes, build parks, and watch it grow... there's nothing quite like it
- detritus0
Ah cool - that makes more sense - perhaps my 'rock' comment came across as snarky, it was supposed to be bemused.
You start off with a budget, you build utilities infrastructure, lay out development zones and roads, set it to play then spend 4 months real time of your life tweaking taxes, layouts, balancing books and then waking up one day wondering what on Earth you've done with your life before installing it, swearing you'll never do that again.
Then, a decade later when the latest version comes out again and the pain and humiliation from your first bout is forgotten, you install it again, then waste a week playing with the thing for half an hour each night, more reaching the point where you ask yourself existential questions about purpose, hope and love.

Nine Months Later and SimCity is a Bust
http://kotaku.com/5989115/simcit…
Kotaku updates its earlier review to say no, you shouldn't play this game.
- Frosty_spl0
Damn so it's not worth it then? What kind of DLC is there?
- All of the default features of previous versions.i_monk
- WTF EA gaahhh!Frosty_spl

About GlassBox

Sorry to bang on about this. but people need to get it into their heads that they shouldn't have to tolerate this kind of bullshit on a product they've just paid good money for. There's no real need for it and it won't actually solve anyting for them.
Accept this now - and what crap do you think they'll dream up to shit on your game-time experience in future?
There's a big reason people flock to unlocked, DRM-free and indie games, and it's only going to get bigger.

I have a feeling I will be addicted to this game for the foreseeable future.

don't know if any of you played the closed beta but i did. after my time with it; a few hours worth, then again a couple more hours last friday. i was sold and went ahead and bought the game. i gotta say playing was a lot of fun. Yes, the smaller map size. I didnt care. that map size has a lot more detail per block now, and there is a lot more data to dig down into. (much more than the older titles.) also the aesthetics convey more than just pretty pictures, aesthetics of a block tells you information about the area. ie. trash on the streets, graffiti on the walls etc. traffic jams aren't just sprites anymore and the Glass Box engine is fantastic!
Im still not sure about Origin (dont care if it's an always online title. i have a lot of those games now) but more of the business practices of EA (just like many of you) fact of the matter, EA is a business and if selling DLCs and micro-payments works as a business model then so be it. (it's not like they invented the practice) and truth be told, they really aren't abusing it.
for all those who did buy the game. you can pre-load it tonight at 11pm it'll be available to play 12:01am

I was really interested in this 'til I read about the DRM/permanent-internet connection requirement, and that a lot of the Beta testers are stating that they think that certain core features are being held back so they can be sold on as additional DLC.
EA truly know how to fuck over their consumers, so fuck 'em.
A shame.
- Also, it's a fucking single-player game - stop trying to make everything multiplayer, you money-wringing cunts.detritus
- fuck micro transactions and DLC, those things are ruining iternexbcn
- I'm pretty sure you can still play the game out of the box without any DLC.monospaced
- No shit? I'm definitely sure that's not what I implied.detritus
- I gathered that was your implication when you said they would ruin it. Sorry for the misunderstanding.monospaced
- I just meant that you don't HAVE to purchase DLC or any of that to play.monospaced
- If developers lowered the price of games a bit, the micro-payments would be easier to swallow.ETM
- Somebody should do that experiment with a larger game and see if it results in more DLC purchases and greater total income.ETM
- total income.ETM
- mg330
Someone needs to cross this over with WOW so your sweet little suburban sprawl can be destroyed by monsters.
- Frosty_spl0
DLC? WTF quit nickle and diming everyone.
- Want to rid your town of pesky tornadoes and destructive earthquakes? Get insurance for only $10.Frosty_spl
- Once again, I don't think any of the DLC is required to play.monospaced
- If it's pay only for dumb stuff you don't need, I'm fine with that. Like 5 bucks for a crazy mansion.Frosty_spl
- As much as I've read, that's the case. If you want expansion packs n' stuff, you pay.monospaced

Glass Box has been in development for years, i can remember even as far back as 07, Maxis teasing us with rudimentary screens and tech demos. and from what i understand, Glass Box is both a render engine and simulation environment. With the SimCity franchise approaching the quarter century old mark, It was about time Maxis decided to refresh the series. a much needed revamp of the world’s best known city builder.
Yet i can't shake the feeling that EA is up to something sinister. We've seen them do with other Maxis titles of the past. They personally fucked up Spore, winch turned a genius idea into a off the self straight to trash title. EA scaled Spore down a year into it's development and the title held a strict 10 install DRM which had to be patched soon after its release. The Sims (another Maxis title) became a shopping cart for DLCs which was responsible for a couple class actions. To top that list, the Origin Software held a Big Brother approach to your actions. Including looking into your browser histories, software installs and monitoring system activity. all that so that they can "improve their software and market data." Since Origin's release that activity has been scaled down to just Origin and EA products.
DRM is a mixed issue at best. more times than it should DRM punishes the wrong party. ( cita: Batman Arkham City) With the new Simcity title, which is scheduled to release something this month, holds a Origin activation requirement and always on internet connection.
I've been excited about this title for a while; Hopefully EA doesn't make me sorry.
Understanding the SimCity Always-on Internet Controversy From Both Sides

Damn, I have been drooling over this game for a year and until now never read about the required internet connection. While I understand their rationale, it is a HUGE disappointment to hear that I won't be able to play in my own sandbox like I had with every version of this game that came before.
Yes, EA has a history of fucking customers, especially Mac users, and messing up potentially good games. Fortunately it seems like the Maxis team is keeping it to a minimum here, from what I've read.
That being said, I am fucking GLAD I have an internet connection and that I will be able to play this game and relive my childhood fascination with city simulation. No, I won't buy any DLC, I don't see any need for a graphics pack or whatever, and if I ever wanted to build in the style of ancient rome or whatever, I can probably pony up a few bucks, but I just don't see it happening.
Also, the multiplayer aspect seems fun. Build a city in a region, invite your friends to build cities in it too and have the cities interact. With all the downsides, I still think the game looks crazy good.

I got it. Just played 2 hours.
Really cool, no bugs, everything was all right. The best Simcity yet imo.
- ernexbcn0
I used the play the original one for the PC and then Sim City 2000.
Never cared much about Maxis post being EA acquired.
