It's really interesting how you think of american bands and they aren't globally massive in the same way as the british ones have been, but the individuals are off the charts massive, MJ, Prince, Madonna, Elvis...
Not a very social bunch are you? Or we're deeply unconfident and insecure and cant go no a stage with out mates.
The best for me is REM

REM
AEROSMITH
JANE'S ADDICTION
DOORS
end of thread
- REM???CygnusZero4
- Obviously just a favorite bands list when they are listed with icons like the Doors.CygnusZero4
- their influence is huge ....not a favorite bands list....I pretty much hate aerosmith and the doorsmarychain
- Rednecks Endlessly Mumbling were interesting for a little while in the early 80's....vaxorcist
- How do you figure REM were rednecks? Just because they're from Atlanta?CyBrainX

Can we just say the Beatles are American and have done with this thread?

This thread really needs to be closed. So much massive idiocy that starts and ends with suggesting that Nirvana would be worthy of such a title. Don't get me wrong, Nirvana were awesome and so much of my high school years is intertwined with their music, but fucking Nirvana? Best American band ever? You've got to be joking.
The problem is that nobody set up criteria for what makes a band the best. Is it sales? Staying power and Longevity? Albums produced? Appeal to a wide demographic of people? Admittance to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? Influence on future bands? Respectability?
- I did begin the thread by saying sales, influence and innovation. I think that's enough don't you?HijoDMaite
- Yeah, I missed that I think. :)
mg33 - nevermind alone was the biggest album ever produced. it changed fucking rock music.uuuuuu
- we're talking influence and popularity you can't really argue with Nirvana. biggest band of the last 20 years and the biggest band in 20 years after nevermind.uuuuuu
- the biggest band of the previous 20 after nevermind.uuuuuu
- It changed music since music was fucking awful at the time. FYI so is Nirvana. Worst band ive ever heard.CygnusZero4
- "RAPE ME" in that awful smoker drug addict voice. Just garbage.CygnusZero4
- yeah rape me was definitely a low point for kurt cobain. cut it from inutero and I think its a masterpiece of heavy rock. better than nevermind.uuuuuu
- better than nevermind.uuuuuu
- I think Rape Me is a great song and I would put In Utero in the same class as Nevermind.CyBrainX

whatever the haters think there is an argument for nirvana but they don't quite compare to the Ramones or even Metallica when we're talking the sum total of popularity and influence. I listen to modern radio rock and so many are just imitating Cobain's style of song and singing. The Nirvanabes started in the 90s and I don't think it ever went away. Some of the biggest bands have copied nirvana to a degree. nickleback, metric, white stripes etc. are just doing elements of nirvana. Even Metallica have.
- hendrix and cobain are two musicians i am genuinely saddened that they did not make anymore music.uuuuuu
- He still thinks Cobain was a musician. Thats extremely debatable.CygnusZero4
- He is what happens when you hand someone a guitar who knows maybe 4 chords.CygnusZero4
- see The Ramones weren't musicians, they were just guys in a band but it doesn't matter because we're talking about fuking rock music anyway.uuuuuu
- ... rock music anyway. As a musician myself i know for a fact cobain was great musician.uuuuuu
- but still the ramones wrote great fucking songs. this constitutes some sort of musicianship.uuuuuu

the very existence of that excremental heap of mediocrity that call themselves nickelback having any connection of admiration whatsoever to a band like Nirvana must somehow tarnish Nirvana beyond whatever could be considered great.... damn.....
sorry the very mention of those asswipe shitheads who call themselves nickelback has caused me to lose my appetite and consider a few hours wasted till I recover from this horrible thought...
then again, great or even not-so-great artists aren't responsible for all the shitheads who try to imitate them.....

So why is nobody giving Pearl Jam a chance?
Over ten albums, all original band members (i think) not destroyed by drugs and booze innovators for sure coming out of the Seattle scene in the late 80's.
Still together, making albums.
Sam could be said for the Chili peppers but I don't think they're funk style is as popular with the rest of the world.
- the documentary Twenty rejuvinated my appreciation for PJ. they have a case, more than nirvana.uuuuuu
- Absolutely, they blew Nirvana out of the water.HijoDMaite
