My father lived there after the war for a few years, and I was brought up in another British 'colony'.
The plain fact where Britain's remaining 'dominions' are concerned is that they are as-such because of self-determination. They are as-such because they have been administered by Britain for longer than any other country, spanning back into history before countries like Argentina even existed.
The Empire was razed by mutual accord with all parties after World War 2, Britain herself encouraging countries to move on and embrace independence.
Argentina merely shows her immaturity and complete lack of relevance in the world if the only thing it has to keep it in the world's eye is a baseless argument it has bleated intermittently about any time her domestic situation needs ditsracting-from.
This advert is, of course, sick - ironically, made in the bastion post of the contemporary Empire, the one that did more than any other to encourage Britain to lose the trappings of Empire.. and is it saying anything about The Falklands? No. Does it, in fact, tacitly support Britain's position? Yes.
Also - the EU's silence on the mater is fairly disgusting. France and the Netherlands should stand with Britain and condemn Argentina's petty irritations - they do, after all, have more possessions worldwide than we do nowadays.
Yeah Y&R and WPP Group should be charged for this crime.
Since WPP is a UK company, lets kick them out of UK and take away knighthood from martin sorrel.
While we are at it, lets kill anyone who is in advertising and send them to argentina.
- Haha, advertising is pretty evilqTime
- Ah, so they are a Brit company? I stopped checking after it said it was NY based. I'm tempted to write a letter..detritus
- WPP moved HQ to Dublin for tax purposesFax_Benson
- weren't they coming back to the UK for tax purposes?raf
^ don't kill anybody. send whoever you are unhappy with to live in Argentina WITH an Argentinian salary; time (and eventually crime) will take care of the rest...
I'm surprised that a company like this doesn't have more morels but then again this is advertising.
See what advertising has done? EVIL.
KILL THEM ALL.
jesus you guys have to chill ffs, its a bit of banter form teh Argies
- Hmm I don't think they really see it as a bit of banter, Argentineans don't really 'get' banterqTime
- I take it you've only ever left the UK on the occasional package tour, then?detritus
- How many Argentinians you know qtime? Americans, maybe... Germans, surely... but Argies?maikel
- Quite a few actually. I lived there for 18 months.qTime
Ah this doesn't surprise me. Class this lot.
i didn't see a bit where he's training on a war memorial? it's only mentioned in the title of the article too.
pretty low, but as it's just a shit tv spot and not an invasion, i can appreciate them trying to stick it up the brits.
Back to advertising.....
Seems pretty harmless. It doesn't send a particularly positive message to it's Argentine audience (we sneakily sent an athlete on to the island when everybody's asleep to do push-ups outside a closed pub - in order to make a cheap political point in the hope of provoking a reaction).
The UK Foreign office taking the bait is predictable though.
Sorrell will do ANYTHING to get results. Checkout his payrise
Alternatively the best statement the Argentinians could make would be to boycott the games. The US did this in 1980 and the soviets in 1984 - both teams basically handed most gold medals to lesser athletes through these nations non-participation.
Making a half-arsed stealth-ad just shows how ridiculous they look. If they grew some balls and boycotted everyone would respect them more. They can't hide behind making sure the games are non-political as they have already done the most sly form of politicising.
The UK recently refused to commit to a firmer alignment with The Falklands but was resolute on backing the Islanders rights to self-government.
As this has evolved from history of turmoil beyond anyones current control (even acknowledging the brutal colonial past of Britain) no one can go in and displace the people who have evolved to live in any given territory.
- Unless they're Palestinian.i_monk
- I almost pre-emoted that :). The last statement isn't totally solid. But I belive that situation is VASTLY uniquebabaganush
- How mush money does one person need FFS, the fucker must have half a Billion tucked away over the years.pillhead
Who the fck gets a 56% pay rise!!!
"Sir Martin Sorrell, chief executive of WPP, was paid £12.9m during 2011, an increase of 56% year on year after his basic pay rocketed 30% and a long-term incentive scheme paid out £5.6m."
^ YEAHHHH EVIL !!!!!
Fuck bankers, advertising is where the real evil is. Brain wash us and laugh at everything. Creative my ass. Bunch of failed wanna be film makers and designers.
