Seems like the answer will ultimately be better conditions in China. Or worse conditions over here and we will accept working in factories for biscuit and tea.
Either way, things will even out eventually.

If iphone was made in US it would be a few dollars more expensive - this is not the point. It probably would be as well done - maybe better, maybe not - this is not the point either. But it WOULD be made in human conditions where people don't have to accept slave like conditions - this IS the point. Us accepting the "made in china" label is like us saying slavery is ok, workers abuse and exploitation is ok, and if that is the case then when do we stop? Is torture then ok? As pointed out by the article the issue is not of $ (after all the execs themselves say that made in US would cost just a few bucks more), but our moral responsibility to either care or not about our fellow beings.
- but what of the shareholders, and the exec jobs if share value decreasesdeathboy

I think this race for profit is essentially killing the US... unless I'm missing something here.

Apple profit $400,000 per employee, astounding!!! I never realized so many women bought the iPhone!!!!
- yes, an iPhone is a womans phone, and for your uncle and grandpa.robotron3k

how much more would it cost to manufacture an iphone in USA? 10 bucks instead and 2 bucks? So they sell it at $500 plus all the extra fees and apps. iphones would make a profit no matter what, they do this for excess in profits and huge growth. They live and die by growth whatever the consequences are.
- they'd give iphones away if they had to. the money is the fees and apps. they just consumers on them.Gminor

ok i read the article.. and i can agree that america will never be able to compete with china in the slightest.. the truth about the magnitude of factories who share neighboring areas for any product development makes it easier to finalize any conceptual idea.
if i need to get something created here.. the stress of figuring out where to get 2 things done at once is a fucking nightmare.. but over there.. i can walk from block to block and in a few hours.. my chicken scratch idea i concepted on a cocktail napkin the night before is not only complete.. i can push it to production within a few days..
im not even describing a 3D print.. im talking about multiple fabrications and constructions .. a physical proto sample.
to think of getting that anywhere in america is a fantasy dream..
i 100% agree with steve jobs, that those jobs in china will never return to america.

Seriously tho, the whole scenario is alarming. America needs to step up its game in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics before Asia eats our lunch in the form of rice bowls and noodles.
On a side note, the accompanying video is well put together if not shockingly alarmist.

I read this a few days ago. At first I felt guilty for owning an iPhone, knowing that it was made at near slave labor conditions. but then i remembered that i have a computer more powerful than my first G4 IN THE PALM OF MY HAND.

A foreman immediately roused 8,000 workers inside the company’s dormitories, according to the executive. Each employee was given a biscuit and a cup of tea, guided to a workstation and within half an hour started a 12-hour shift fitting glass screens into beveled frames. Within 96 hours, the plant was producing over 10,000 iPhones a day.
“The speed and flexibility is breathtaking,” the executive said. “There’s no American plant that can match that.”
- That is horrible, deplorable, maniacal... that shit is fuckedKnuckleberry

Steve Jobs then responded "You wouldn't be here without soft money campaign contributions from the likes of people that actually have a brain and create jobs!, in other words me."

@animatedgif,
The pot is simply too big for your small ladel to stir. You're going to have to try harder than that.

More broadly, I would, and do, pay more for home-grown stuff, local businesses and stores always get our money first.
