I've done some work for a new client but they can't pay me unless I'm a limited company - which I'm not.
I understand there are companies out there that can invoice them for me for a small fee, does anyone know of any / have any recommendations? ta

fuck you, pay me

Seriously, that is NOT an acceptable excuse! You can invoice them yourself for NO FEE and that should have been stated in your contract for work with this new client when you started the project. Work = pay. Period.

so they were glad to accept your work at the end of the project, but now say they can't pay you?
Time for some fucking pliers and blow torches.

fighting this and getting them to pay you will take your time, energy, etc. Sounds like a legal issue for them (like how large companies can hire contractors at crazy hourly fees, but a 60K/year art director full-time is a no-go) There's a lot of complicated issues with tax law. It MIGHT actually benefit you to have you own LTD (I have a personal LLC) it allows for a lower tax withdrawl and there are certain benefits to it (I'm in the US though).
Worst case scenario - get a friend who has an LTD to billthrough them, take a slightly lesser portion (as your friend will need to claim money for taxes) and be done with it. Fighting this will lead to months of 'strongly-worded' letters and in the end will probably leave you with nothing (of course that depends on how much you're owed.)

I'm confused. In the US if you have a Social Security # you can invoice and get paid. Why would it not be the same in the UK? I don't know shit about the tax laws there, but I can't imagine someone contracting for work and having policies in place that don't allow them to pay. Ridiculous!

In the UK you can preformed Ltd companies 'off the shelf' for about £300. If you're likely to get more work from them it may advantageous to do this. Also, as 'identity' said there are tax benefits.

Um.. that's bullshit?
Demand that their accounts department pay in cash and get them to add it to the expenses on whatever account it is you've done work on.
Seriously - the only "can't" is down to the vagueries of their internal system. If they didn't make it clear beforehand you'd have to be a LTD co. to pay, then they're in the wrong.
Depending upon how long it's been, I'd consider drawing up a Letter Before Action and sending copies to accounts and their MD.
Fucking assholes - I hate slippery shit like this.

Your options are limited.

This isn't such unusual behaviour, especially from larger organisations. You could approach your client and ask them to pay you through their expense account in cash.

Tell them you are in fact a limited company and the company name just so happens to be your name. Get the check....go cash.

A few brash responses here, this is more than normal in the UK.
In terms of umbrella companies, I have been told http://www.parasolgroup.co.uk/ are good.
LTD companies are easy to setup, but of course there is cost incurred with hiring an account for end of year tax forms which is a requirement.
- There's no LAW dictating this, is there? It's a systemic problem? If so, there's NO reason they cant pay.detritus
- and if they didn't state that upfront, they can go fuck themselves. I'd call legal in no time.detritus

but then I'm a bastard.detritus - same with me detritus, this isn't a complicated concept. I work, you fucking pay. Been like that for milleniamonospaced
