I contracted for a company that only could deal with Limiteds. When my manager found out they couldn't pay me, they hired me via a recruitment company—and covered the additional cost.

This thread makes me angry.

All they need to know is that you're a registered company if they're worried about audits.
Give them your unique tax ID (UTR)
Don't take that UTTER CRAP!

Make your self an LP / LLC etc and get paid.

You should have gotten half the amount before starting any work.
This company knew they were going to screw you from the beginning. They knew you werent a limited company at the start of the project and they still accepted your work? Thats shady.
Chalk this up to a learning experience and get your shit together for the next job.

choose an umbrella company from here:
http://www.umbrelladetective.com…
give the umbrella company the details of the job, and some sort of signed timesheet if you can to prove the worked hour on the job. The umbrella company will invoice your client and pay you by P.A.Y.E - less tax etc.
Should only cost you £25 -/+ which can be offset as a business expense against tax.

^ but as "SunSunSun" says, try invoicing them and giving them your unique Tax ID.
if it's the case that in this first time for working with them they didn't say upfront that you need to be a LTD, then explain to them you are a sole trader and in this case could they take your TAX ID as reference and pay you - and then say you'll work as a LTD in the future. If they are half decent they will pay you. and if you do want to work for them again, then consider setting up as LTD.
Natwest have 2 years free business banking on their standard business account. And some umbrella companies offer LTD setup and book keeping/accounting for £75 a month. all you have to do is send them your time-sheets and they do all the invoicing etc for you.
Or you can find an account and do the invoicing yourself. you can setup a ltd for around £30

this sounds like an excessive stalling excuse. Was it ever agreed that they would only pay you if you ltd before you agreed to take on the work? Do you have a paper trail in regards to approval of your original estimate/quote/proposal/contract...
