Um.. that's bullshit?
Demand that their accounts department pay in cash and get them to add it to the expenses on whatever account it is you've done work on.
Seriously - the only "can't" is down to the vagueries of their internal system. If they didn't make it clear beforehand you'd have to be a LTD co. to pay, then they're in the wrong.
Depending upon how long it's been, I'd consider drawing up a Letter Before Action and sending copies to accounts and their MD.
Fucking assholes - I hate slippery shit like this.
