fighting this and getting them to pay you will take your time, energy, etc. Sounds like a legal issue for them (like how large companies can hire contractors at crazy hourly fees, but a 60K/year art director full-time is a no-go) There's a lot of complicated issues with tax law. It MIGHT actually benefit you to have you own LTD (I have a personal LLC) it allows for a lower tax withdrawl and there are certain benefits to it (I'm in the US though).
Worst case scenario - get a friend who has an LTD to billthrough them, take a slightly lesser portion (as your friend will need to claim money for taxes) and be done with it. Fighting this will lead to months of 'strongly-worded' letters and in the end will probably leave you with nothing (of course that depends on how much you're owed.)
