If you like walking and weather permits (as well as footwear) then walk. It's pretty compact.
My wife and I spent an entire day walking from our hotel at Union Square down Market Street to Haight-Ashbury. Checked out Amoeba Music, walked most of the Golden Gate Park to be disappointed by the bison. When back down Fulton and up to Geary for lunch at a Cafe. Up Veteran's to the Golden Gate bridge, but only walked 2/3 across because we got worried for time. Down along the beach and made it back to Fisherman's Wharf before we grabbed a bus the rest of the way back because it was getting dark and our feet killed us. But it was the best day there. You only get a feel for a city when you walk, I find. We saw tourist spots, regular neighborhoods (shady ones too.).
- For those that live/lived in SF, the Richmond area north of Golden Gate Park, what type of area is that?ETM
- It was hard to pin down walking through it. Good, shady, average?ETM
- depends on the block. Inner (Arguello–15th) is nice. Central (15th–35th) is dull, suburban. Outer (35th–Beach) is windy, surfer land with some rich Russian enclaves. Why do you ask?
JonWilliams - It's residential.i_monk
- I know it's residential, I was looking curious about the caliber of the area. Good, bad, safe etc.ETM
- @JonWilliams
I agree dull. Stark even. Lots of concrete, few trees.ETM - not much over there. and it takes forever to get to downtown because no BART. the weather is usually shit as well.lvl_13
- @ETM It's definitely safe. I've lived on 9th, now on 47th, and actually enjoy it. Love being by the beach and the park and still 20 mins commute to SOMA.
JonWilliams - Cheers. We didn't feel unsafe or anything. Just curious, as like I said, I just couldn't get a feel of the area one way or the other.ETM
- Me and the Mrs did a different route but same idea. I totally agree with taking a long walk and seeing the unplanned!ShaneHolley

Walk across the Golden Gate Bridge. Have a pitcher (in the sun) over at Zeitgeist, and then walk over to Taqueria El Farolito for some tacos and another beer.
- Watch out for the roaches and rats at Zeitgeist.dMullins
- Forgot about Farolito. So fucking excellent.dMullins

This is always fun too. Movies in Dolores Park. More excuses for smoking and drinking in public.

The Pier (major tourist attraction, but worth it)
Stroll down Market Street around noon

Shimos sushi on 25th/Clement the fuckin best hands down if you like true traditional Japanese sushi, not cheap though, shimo (the owner) a cool dude too, ask him for his recommendations, he will make you stuff thats not on the menu and its the BOMB, if you stay late and get your server drunk, shimo will most likely drink with you and perhaps even read your girlfriends palm. great conversations to be had with that guy.
and if you like Robin Williams he eats there almost every Monday evening, seen Chris Issak eats there at random too, dude pulled out his guitar and started playing once.- I used to eat there every week. Lived a block away.cannonball1978

The Beach Chalet by the beach is quite nice for a beer too when it's not packed with d-bags.
Brooklyn Bridge of course; perhaps the headlands and Sausalito depending on the weather.
Maybe a drive down Route 1 toward Pacifico.

If you like beer - the Toronado is king.

that uptown almanac post is funny / sad. dude has some key points about why SF sucks, and some superficial ones about why he's probably an asshole.
but, san francisco is a totally overrated shithole of a city. the snobbish attitudes / head in the sky whatever about the money that just floats around is no different from los angeles, yet SF people think they and their city are quite superior.
i get every city has a certain stigma and pride in itself, but SF has to be one of the most hypocritical environments for faux-liberalism i've ever encountered.
- yeah, you can't really drive around in your quarter-million dollar maserati and act like you are "for the common man"lvl_13

After hitting up Amoeba records, walk to the park a block away, go through the tunnel (buy whatever you want on the way ;) and join in on a drum circle.

Hmmm seems doable... but, what is there to do there? besides wine? Any suggestions?
